Are you an Active Participant in Life?

Are you Living Well and Enjoying Life?

Welcome to Active April 2024 – Be An Active Participant in Life

When I first saw that the Action for Happiness Theme Calendar was ‘Active April’ I thought about the physical aspect of challenging myself to exercise every day for 30 days. In the past I had implemented Active April and written blog posts around exercise. This time I wanted it to be different!

On reflection I decided to implement Active April in my own way by taking up the challenge to be an Active Participant in Life in some way each day. I’m would love you to join me in the daily challenge, helping and encouraging each other throughout April.

It’s about more than exercise. It is about getting the most out of life. Keeping physically active is vital as we age but so too is keeping our brain active. I want the Active April – Being an active Participant Challenge to enrich our lives – physically, mentally and spiritually.

We are now into the second quarter of the year but we can START GETTING MORE ACTIVITY INTO OUR DAY on ANY DAY OF THE WEEK OR YEAR! It’s just a matter of starting.

Whilst part of the focus of Active April will be around moving our bodies, I also encourage you to be an ACTIVE PARTICIPANT IN LIFE! That means making time to get out and about, enjoying what life has to offer. It’s about keeping your Mind active as well as your body.

Perhaps you might like to try something new – Active April is the time.

I’m sharing this post on the Women Living Well After 50 Podcast if you would prefer to listen rather than read

What does being an Active Participant in Life mean?

Being an active participant in life means engaging fully in the various aspects of life rather than being a passive bystander. It involves taking initiative, making choices, and actively pursuing goals and experiences that align with one’s values, interests, and aspirations.

Active participation in life can manifest in many ways, including:

  1. Setting goals: Actively identifying what you want to achieve and working towards those objectives.
  2. Taking action: Rather than waiting for things to happen, actively seeking out opportunities and taking proactive steps to make things happen.
  3. Being present: Fully engaging in the present moment, whether it’s in conversations, activities, or experiences, rather than being preoccupied with the past or future.
  4. Embracing challenges: Viewing challenges as opportunities for growth and learning, and actively seeking ways to overcome obstacles.
  5. Seeking fulfillment: Actively pursuing activities, relationships, and experiences that bring joy, satisfaction, and meaning to life.
  6. Making decisions: Taking responsibility for one’s choices and actions, and actively making decisions that align with personal values and goals.
  7. Continuous learning: Remaining curious and open to new experiences, ideas, and perspectives, and actively seeking opportunities for personal and professional development.

Overall, being an active participant in life involves taking ownership of one’s experiences and actively shaping one’s own path rather than passively letting life happen. It’s about being engaged, proactive, and intentional in how one lives and experiences life.

Why 30 days of Activity?

  • A great way to kickstart a healthy habit or challenge yourself to try something new.
  • Establishes a Habit
  • Builds Consistency
  • Sets Achievable Goals
  • Improves Physical Health
  • Boosts Mental Well-being
  • Explores New Activities
  • Builds Self-discipline

What does the WLWA50 Being an Active Participant in Life Challenge look like?

  • It is simple really. I want to keep it as simple as possible so there won’t be any daily emails clogging your box. Just a daily social media post for you to check in (if you would like to). You may want to do the challenge but not check in – that’s fine it’s a FREE challenge so you can make your own rules. Personally, checking in helps me to stay on track.
  • We commit to being active and being an active participant in life each day of April. – You can do this three different ways. You can choose to use the calendar below for the prompts which has a variety of ways we can be more active in life. Some ideas are very creative and some are certainly part of our daily lives. You have the option of doing what I’m doing or you can do your own thing. Just move and be active in life – you decide how.
  • No, it doesn’t mean full on workouts each day, although I’m going to encourage you to do some form of exercise for heart health, strong bones and increased muscle mass.
  • Yes, it means being active in life in some way each day – it could be exercising or it could be keeping your mind active or catch up with friends, seeing a show, doing something different. No, it doesn’t mean sitting all day every day and not enjoying life and participating in what life has to offer.
  • I’ll be posting daily on social media with encouragement and what I’m planning or have done to be active. I might even share some photos of my husband, Mike as well. If you aren’t on social media you can still take part and I will do a weekly check-in post every Sunday, so you can check in each week by leaving a comment on the post.
  • You check in with what you’ve done by leaving a comment on the social media post.

Sue, the seven actions you have listed make a wonderful blueprint for a satisfying life. I will do my best to check every box during the month of April. Time to get back on track. Thanks for the inspiration.

Thanks for the feedback, Suzanne and like you I’m going to try to check every box during the month. I hope you are settling down after your cruise and all that was happening in life before then. x

Another great post Sue! I love this idea of being an active participant of life and not just allowing the days to slide by but seeking to make the most of each day physically, mentally and spiritually. Came at just the right time for me as I’m currently away visiting family and spending a special week with a dear friend. I intend to make the most of the time I have with them and hopefully also being a positive influence in their lives as well. Chris xx

Hi Chris, thanks for the feedback and I think it is just what I need this month. I’m so happy you are visiting again and can’t wait to catch up x

How interesting you should post this today! I just uploaded the fitness app I used to use and set my walking and biking goals for the the 6 months of spring/summer/fall. I am seriously giving thought to a triathlon and have gone so far as to look up the date and location of it. I love the concept of not just moving our bodies but also connecting — something I focused very hard on last year and have continued to carry on with it this year. Bernie

Hi Bernie, when I read your previous comment, I had just finished this post so it was very timely. Looking forward to your feedback. x

What a great idea! Just the motivation I need not the I no longer walk work I need some other simple, daily exercise.

Great post. And no better way to motivate yourself than to have someone to do it with! #Wwwhimsy

Thank Lydia I love running with my running buddy and daughter to keep me accountable that is for sure. Plus we enjoy our chats along the way. x

Great initiative and post. My aim this month is to do 30 minutes of activity each day – something I’ve stepped back from over summer …

    • Reply Sue Loncaric April 4, 2024 at 10:30

Hi Jo, good for you with the activity. I know myself it is so easy not to do something so the challenge is more for me in a selfish way to get me back on track. If others join in then that’s great too! x

Hi Sue, I love your twist on Active April – making it more about being an active participant in life rather than a single focus on exercise. After losing my Dad and watching the decline of my Mum, I know that we need to make the most of every day while we can – grab life by the horns so to speak! I’m not as actively participating in life as I usually do but I’m doing all that feels right for me at this time. I’m still managing to do my yoga and pilates each morning but very little exercise outside of that unless it’s incidental. I’ve not done any of my art or pursued my goals in that area but as you know, life has had other plans for me at this time. Hopefully I’ll get back to all that eventually. Thank you for linking up with #WWWhimsy again. It’s always wonderful to see you here. I hope you had a fabulous Easter! xo

Yes I started to write it from the usual Active (being exercise) April and then I went off on a tangent which I really love the idea of. I know it is a difficult time for you Min but taking small time out for yourself is enough at the moment. x

I love your twist on active April; that’s a great way to think about it.

    • Reply Sue Loncaric April 4, 2024 at 10:33

I started thinking about the challenge from an exercise point of view, Joanne but then realised there was more to it and I love the concept I’ve come up with. x

A great example to us all of how you can take something like a physical challenge and then make it fit other areas too.

    Go well Sue!

    Denyse.

Thanks so much for your kind words, Denyse. There is so much more thank exercise to being an active participant in life.
