Why Health & Happiness go hand-in-hand

This month I’ve been concentrating on  Making MAY my month of Happiness  and encouraging you to do the same.  Back in April last year I took part in the.AtoZ Challenge and my theme was the A to Z Guide to Healthier & Happier You.

I thought it would be appropriate to revisit a post from that collection  which was ‘H is for Health & Happiness’ – Why You Need Both.  You can read the full post here.

The main point was based on a quote from the Dalai Lama:

Happiness is the highest form of health

To me Health and Happiness are something we all strive for and I don’t really believe we can have one without the other.  I shared in detail the following reasons why Health and Happiness go hand in hand.  Below is a condensed version and I would love you to read the original post in full if you have the time.

Why Health & Happiness go hand in hand

1. Physical health plus Mental health plus Spiritual Health all combine to make us feel holistically well.

2.Exercise reduces Stress and clears the mind.

3. Good healthy food can improve your mood.

4. Exercise releases endorphins – a chemical released into your brain which triggers positive feelings.

5. Being healthy means you can do more because you are fitter, not only physically but mentally.  You have more energy and feel alive.

6. Spending time outdoors and getting back to nature provides a sense of wellbeing.

7. Exercise can improve your sleep and we all know how grumpy we can get if we don’t have a good night’s sleep.

8. When you feel good, you look good and you want to achieve more in your life. Your self-esteem improves. You feel happy when you achieve your dreams and goals and so a healthy and happy cycle begins.

So, do you think that Health & Happiness go hand-in-hand for total well-being?

    Yes I do – definitely – I think stress and misery probably leave the body vulnerable to succumbing to degenerative diseases it might have resisted if the person was happy and content with no chronic stress.

    I think you are mostly correct. I would like to think it is possible, if you suffer from a chronic illness, to still be happy – but I don’t know. When I was struggling through a tough year of cancer treatment, I’d like to tell you I was happy, but really? I had a few happy moments certainly, but all the time I was aware of my body telling me how lousy it felt! A Lesson in Communication

      Yes that is a hard one Shirley. I suppose I was trying to make the point that generally if you maintain a healthy lifestyle you will feel happier. Of course, having a chronic illness puts extra stress and it isn’t always easy to be upbeat. I have read though that having a positive outlook can help in coping with the illness. I haven’t had experience though but you have been there haven’t you? Have a beautiful day and thanks always for taking the time to comment.

    ‘Healthy lifestyle’ is definitely one of the contributors to ‘happiness’. Research repeatedly proves this. Shirley makes an important point about ‘health’ and ‘happiness’. I believe it’s what we do to keep ourselves as healthy as we can, that counts most!

      So true Donna. Sue, I love this post and agree with your discussion but as I get older, I’ve found myself facing minor health issues. It’s been a challenge at times to keep on going with the good and healthy lifestyle choices. I’m thankful that I have persevered because it’s helped me cope with the challenges life and ageing (!!) have put before me.

        I agree, SSG – Persevering, especially as we age, is both challenging and essential. Fitness takes so long to build up and is so easy to let slip. “If you don’t use it, you lose it” is my mantra in retirement!

        Hi SSG thanks for your comment and I hope you are feeling better. I suppose I was generalising a little in that trying to lead a healthier lifestyle will make you feel good about yourself which in turn can bring happiness.       That was my point Donna as well. Generally speaking keeping healthy through a healthy lifestyle surely must bring us happiness. Happiness helps to reduce stress which sometimes can be the cause of illness. I do agree with Shirley though, a chronic illness like cancer must be very difficult to be ‘up’ all the time.     I totally agree Sue. I feel much happier after I’ve exercised, got some sunshine and breathed in some fresh air. Recently when we were hiking on a couple of trails in Italy (Cinque Terre and the Amalfi Coast) I felt elation like I’ve never experience before. The scenery was so breathtaking and the walks were so challenging that it made me feel literally on top of the world. 🙂 #TeamLovinLife

    I actually just wrote about this somewhere else (in a blog comment or on a comment on my own blog post I think). And it was exactly this… I’m feeling happier and it could be because my health, weight and fitness have improved. But it could conversely be the case that my health, weight, fitness have improved because I’m happier and more contented.

    I’m happy with my life, so was a bit shocked recently to learn that I have HIGH blood pressure. What the?! Imagine what it would be like if I wasn’t happy!!!!

    There is definitely a correlation between the two Sue – I have a frozen shoulder atm and it definitely takes away some of the joy in the day when it grabs me with pain or drains me from the ache. I’m looking forward to getting it back to normal, but it looks like a long road to recovery. It didn’t help when I was told it was common post 40 – another joy of getting older!

    Yes, absolutely! I really think that stress has a lot to answer for. If we concentrate on keeping as healthy as possible it’s good for our mind and when we feel good physically we feel good mentally too 🙂

      Exactly Jo! Stress can be a killer and not always easy to combat. I find that exercise really helps my stress levels. If I’m stressed my husband usually asks ‘do you think you should go for a run?’ and yes that usually helps. Have a great weekend. x

    You’re speaking my language Sue! Stress very literally brought me to my knees and forced me to take a good hard look at my life and make some urgent changes. No longer do I commute to work for 2 hours per day. No longer do I live the corporate lifestyle. No more long work hours. No more bringing work home and working late into the night at home. I walked away from all of that. My health and wellbeing is my focus now. I lost my income but I gained so much more! #TeamLovinLife

    They absolutely do go hand in hand. I’m struggling with weight issues at present. I commented to Debbish earlier that since we moved I feel as though I’ve taken a heavy backpack off, yet I’ve also put on another few kilos that I can’t afford to put on. I’m sure that once I let go of the last of my (perceived) responsibilities I’ll be brave enough to start unfeeling those layers again. It’s such a head game. #TeamLovinLife
