Where are you placing your energy?

January 16, 2021
Positive Energy

Recently, during a conversation with my friend and fellow blogger, Erica from Behind the Scenery, she mentioned that her focus for 2021 was to look at;

Where I’m placing my energy

Erica Hefnault

I listened and agreed, although I didn’t give the statement much more thought after we finished our chat.

You can’t pour from an empty cup‘ is a well-used saying and it is true. Likewise the analogy of when on a flight putting our oxygen mask on first before helping others. (Yes, I know we won’t be on a flight anytime soon, but you get what I mean!)

2020 was a hectic year for me, despite COVID and I actually achieved a great deal including completing my Group Fitness Instructor Certification, starting as a Group Fitness Instructor in the Strong Healthy Women Virtual Studio and also starting the Women Living Well After 50 podcast with 26 episodes aired. It was a positive year despite COVID and one that I shared with you in my post Reflecting on 2020 and yes, there were some positives!

I was sailing along quite well, until my Mother-In-Law unexpectedly passed in October. It was then that I stepped back as I explained in my post What do you do when life doesn’t go to plan?, to support my husband and just take some time off to Review and Reset. I also, like many, reviewed the lessons I had learned in 2020 to take forward into 2021.

The period of ‘time out’ and ‘reflection’ gave me time to think about Erica’s words in detail and I seriously considered what I wanted to keep in my life and what I wanted to let go of in 2021. I do know that I have reassessed many areas and will re-introduce the podcast, some time in 2021 when I feel the time is right for me.

Whilst spending two days with my darling grandsons this week, Erica’s words came back to me, yet again. I had two fun-filled and joyful days with Ethan and Elliot and was reminded that spending time with them is a priority in my life and certainly where I want to place my energy.

This is a great exercise to reflect on and commit to focus on what is important to you as an individual. We are all unique and so, our needs and desires must reflect what we want, rather than what we read we should be doing or saying. It has to be right for you.

Where I’m placing my energy in 2021?

When I thought about it, I realised that my Word Of The Year answers this question succinctly and encompasses every area of my life. It is ‘SELF’

I need to embrace my SELF and live my life with the focus of keeping what SERVES me WELL and LETTING GO of what is holding me back and making me feel trapped in life.

I will be placing my energy into finding joy, love, gratitude in my relationships, activities, self-care, health and well-being, learning and growth. If something is depleting my energy levels, whether that be physically, mentally or spiritually then I will be letting it go and replacing it with something that enriches my life and ‘fills my cup’.

So thank you to Erica, my friend, for giving me something to ponder and ‘run with’ in 2021.

I love how bloggers bounce off each other and create inspiration for posts like this Sue. You’re so right (and so is Erica) about placing value on what’s important and channelling our energies in that direction – rather than spreading ourselves so thin that we burn out and feel we’re not doing anything really well. I keep falling back on the “I should” mentality and then having to remind myself that I can now do what I please and what feels right – not what I think others might say I “should” be doing – it’s a very freeing way to live (especially in these unsettled times).

Hi Leanne, yes I agree and lately I’ve been finding some gems through conversations with others. ‘I should’ is one that we all fight against isn’t it? Yes, we do have some responsibilities in life but mostly we should be doing what gives us energy and not what drags us down. x

I agree with all you say Sue. For a few years I’ve been focusing on what makes happy. I’m making this more of a priority in 2021 along with my health. They are connected as I know that when I’m happy I focus more on my health. #weekendcoffeeshare

Hi Jen, thanks for visiting I hope your arm is mending and you are feeling stronger. I’m happy when I’m healthy and like you agree there is a connection with happiness and healthy mind, body and spirit. xx

Your photo with Ethan and Elliot says it all. What better place to put your energy? Erica posed an excellent question that can guide us all in the year ahead. “Where to put our energy?” I love your answer: “joy, love, gratitude, relationships, self-care, health, well-being, learning and growth!” Thank you for sharing this.

It was such a fun time, Donna and I agree the photo says it all. I saw your photo of you and Richard with your granddaughters for Stevie’s birthday so much joy despite COVID. xx

Hi Sue, I am very moved reading your post and thank you for your kind mention. I believe our discussions about intentions and themes helped me realize how I want to continue living my life. Where am I placing my most precious resource, my energy? The walking challenge, especially the evening walks have helped me clarify my priorities. You are my fitness inspiration, Sue, and you know first hand how working on a healthy lifestyle influences much more than our physical body.

I am totally with you how spending time with the grandchildren is a priority and always replenishes my spirit. I also love meeting with supportive, like-minded friends each week. I can feel this wave of great energy from the other side of the planet. xx

Hi Erica, your words really spoke to me and as I said in my post this week I was reminded about how important my darling grandsons are to me and that I love putting my energy into time with them. Thank you for sharing your thoughts during our discussion because they set me on a course to really reflect on what the idea of our energy means to me. Sending love and hugs to you, my friend. xx

The quote ‘You can’t pour from an empty cup‘ is a very good one, and my motto for this year is self-respect and to treat myself as I would others. I tend to not believe in myself and to talk bad about myself. This year I’m going to work on that, in all sorts of contexts. Because how you treat yourself very much affects how you treat others!

    • Reply Sue Loncaric January 17, 2021 at 09:19

I love your motto Susanne because I always say Self-Care is Self-Respect and if we don’t respect ourselves then we can’t expect that from others. It is difficult not to listen to the ‘mean girl’ in our heads putting us down all the time. I’m applaud you for making that a priority in 2021 and totally agree that there is a flow on affect from feeling good within. Lovely to meet you and thank you for visiting. xx

Sue, That is a beautiful photo of you with your grandsons. In 2021, I place my energy in areas similar to yours. I categorize mine into three areas: Health, Home, and Leisure. Thank you for linking up with #WeekendCoffeeShare. Please spread the word about the link up if possible. Have a nice weekend!

    • Reply Sue Loncaric January 17, 2021 at 09:17

Yes I had such fun with the boys and they certainly bring me joy. Will spread the word re #WeekendCoffeeShare and I’ve met some new bloggers through the linkup already. Have a great week, Natalie. x

I LOVE that photo fo you with the boys and you all looks so happy and loved. I think Erica’s words are spot on and your WOTY is perfect for you. You also help us to see how we can take steps to make what we want to do a priority rather than thinking about what we should be doing! I love learning from each other as Leanne says, it’s such a great community to be a part of. Thanks for sharing this Sue.

I love that photo too Deb. We had such fun over the two days. I love learning from other women in particular and Erica’s thoughts really resonated with me. xx

I saw a phrase recently that seems to fit this idea: “where your attentions goes, so energy flows”. By putting my attention on the positive, on awareness, on growth, that is where I hope my energy will flow this year!

    • Reply Sue Loncaric January 25, 2021 at 09:07

I love that phrase Pat, it really says it all. I might use that myself. x

Hi Sue, looking at where you wish to place your energy is a very good way of deciding how best to spend your time for your own wellbeing. I have no grandchildren so can’t say that I want to place my energy there but if I did I know I would! By the way your two grandsons are so adorable & cute. That’s a wonderful photo of the three of you! Your post has given me some food for thought so thank you to yourself and Erika! Have a wonderful week! xo

    • Reply Sue Loncaric January 25, 2021 at 09:09

Hi Min, It is a lovely photo of us and I don’t have many of the three of us together so this is special. I found Erica’s thoughts very inspiring and useful as I try to find exactly what I want in life at the moment. Have a great week! x

  • Reply Deborah Cook January 18, 2021 at 11:08

I can completely relate to this being a priority – spending time (and focussing) on things that matter. My biggest issue at the moment is that I’m not exactly sure what they are for me. I continue to be torn by conflicting values – freedom vs financial security for eg.

    • Reply Sue Loncaric January 25, 2021 at 09:05

Hi Deb, I know exactly how you feel. I’m going through an adjustment period of really knowing which direction to take. It is taking much longer than I expected. x

  • Reply Joanne Tracey January 18, 2021 at 13:02

As you know I’ve been struggling with this a tad of late – between where I should be placing energy and where I want to place it…and the 2 are at polar opposites. In between is where I waste energy as I struggle with the opposition. Sigh.

    • Reply Sue Loncaric January 25, 2021 at 09:05

I’m still struggling Jo and hopefully I can find some balance in 2021. Take care, my friend. x

  • Reply Laurie January 19, 2021 at 03:12

What a sweet photo of you and your grandsons! Spending time with them is always a good investment of energy! I love your word of the year, especially when you look at the positive connotations like self-confidence and self-care (rather than the negative ones like selfish). Living intentionally, thinking about where I’m spending my energy, is something I would like to focus on too.

    • Reply Sue Loncaric January 25, 2021 at 09:04

Hi Laurie, yes they are the joy of my life. I love my word ‘SELF’ because each time I see it written, it reminds me to pause and think about how that moment is affecting me. Is it positive or negative? Have a lovely week and thanks for stopping by. x

I like the notion of where am I placing my energy. I get very enthused about a great deal in my life. I love to share and I like to be social. Sometimes though, lately I forget that I have physical reasons for not being able to participate in all that I want. Lucky then that my mind helps me there by being kind, telling me it’s OK and then acknowledging that my body is still in recovery mode from major abdominal surgery and that I have low iron which is requiring an infusion in February.

Thank you for sharing your post in Life This Week, the Monday link up on my blog. Each Monday, there is an optional prompt but you can link up a post (just one) old or new, on or off prompt. Next week’s is 4/51 Cannot. 25 Jan.Hope to see you back here then. Denyse.

    • Reply Sue Loncaric January 25, 2021 at 09:01

Hi Denyse, like you I get enthused by life but sometimes we just need to think about where our energy is going and whether it is the best use of that energy. Have a lovely week. x
