Welcome to the #wellnessreimagined link up co-hosted by Deb from Deb’s World, Donna from Retirement Reflections, Jennifer from The Retirement Phase and Jo from And Anyways .
I was pondering what to write for these posts and decided that rather than just giving an update on my month I wanted to provide more information to encourage us all to dive deeper into our health and wellbeing. I want us to Reimagine wellness and what it means to us.
Last month I wrote about Recharge & Thrive: The 7 Types of Rest Every Woman Needs, which included Creative Rest and Sensory Rest and these two were a surprise to some of my readers. This month I want to explore the difference between Balance and Harmony and why we could benefit from shifting our mindset.
I was interviewing a guest for an upcoming episode of the Women Living Well After 50 Podcast and the topic of finding Balance was raised. I think I said something like ‘I need to work on finding more balance in my life’. My guest, suggested that perhaps Balance wasn’t what I needed but rather, ‘Harmony’. We agreed that ‘Balance’ has become a bit of a buzz word, but when I researched I discovered it really is a fallacy and something that is almost impossible to maintain.
In 2016 I wanted to find more BALANCE in my life and selected Balance as my WOTY. It was interesting revisiting this post and comparing it to how I view Balance now.
This comment from my guest, started me thinking and it certainly made sense when I reflected on our conversation and did some research.
What if we replaced the word ‘Balance’ with ‘Harmony’?
Wellness Reimagined: Cultivating Harmony for a Life in Full Bloom
We’ve long been told to seek balance—to juggle work, relationships, health, and self-care with equal measure. But balance implies a rigid act, a constant struggle to give everything an equal share. There is the perception that if we don’t have ‘Balance’ in our life we are failing in some way. Instead, what if we embraced harmony in a way of thinking that will help us to continue to bloom?
As my WOTY is Bloom I’ve tried to tie this in with my thoughts on how we can find harmony in the garden of our life.
From Balance to Harmony: Nurturing Your Growth
Balance suggests that every part of life must receive equal attention at all times.
But just like flowers bloom in their own season, different aspects of our lives take priority at different moments. Life is never in balance no matter how hard we strive.
Harmony allows us to nurture what needs care, trusting that other areas will flourish in their time.
It doesn’t mean slowing down completely and just moving through life without purpose. It means that at certain times somethings will require more of your attention than other areas in your life.
Blooming in Harmony with Wellness
Movement with Flow: Just as plants need a mix of sunlight and shade, our bodies thrive on variety—some days call for energy, others for rest. Listen to your body’s rhythm. Workout a movement plan that will incorporate all the areas we need to stay healthy and fit – strength, cardio, balance, mobility and flexibility. Above all listen to what your body is telling you and don’t try to compete with what others are doing. You might want to listen to my recent podcast interview The Retirement Phase – Thriving After 70 staying fit, active and loving life with Jennifer Jones
Eating with Ease: Instead of following rigid diet rules, focus on making intentional food choices that support both health and enjoyment. Harmony in eating means choosing nutrient-rich foods that fuel your body while also allowing space for pleasure and flexibility—like a thriving garden with diverse, nourishing plants. You might like to listen to or watch two recent podcast episodes, “Food Reset: Why I Quit Ultra-Processed Foods for a Healthier Life” with Donna Connolly and Why Smart Women Don’t Diet with Ginny Trierweiler.
Self-Care with Intention: Flowers don’t force themselves to bloom; they grow with patience and care. Prioritize self-care in ways that feel natural—whether that’s mindfulness, relaxation, or meaningful connection. Take time to work out what self-care means to you.
Living An Harmonious Life in Full Bloom
- Let go of the pressure to do it all at once—trust in the natural flow of your life.
- Nurture what needs your focus, knowing that other areas will blossom in time.
- Shift from rigid routines to rhythms that support your well-being.
By moving beyond balance and embracing harmony, we allow ourselves to bloom—growing with grace, thriving in our own time, and living with joy, fulfillment, and ease. We create a life that flows naturally—one that is fulfilling, flexible, and aligned with our true well-being. We free ourselves from the pressure of “getting it all right” and instead create a life that flows naturally
Doesn’t that feel freeing? By embracing harmony, we give ourselves permission to grow, thrive, and enjoy life with more ease and joy on our terms and for our own individual needs.
I recently listened to Wintering: The Power of Rest and Retreat in Difficult Times by Katherine May. This book celebrates the natural cycles of life and the value of slowing down—perfect for those seeking harmony over hustle. An Action to Cultivate Harmony
This week, take a moment to reflect: Where in your life are you forcing balance instead of allowing harmony? Choose one area—whether it’s movement, eating, or self-care—and make a small shift toward flow. Maybe it’s swapping a workout for a stretch, enjoying a meal without guilt, or simply resting when needed.
Instead of striving to do it all, let’s focus on living well, in tune with ourselves.
March Health Goals
Following my #WellnessReimagined post last month, I worked to achieve the 7 types of rest every woman needs. I think I achieved that:
- I’m sleeping more hours each night with a regular bedtime and less time waking during the course of the night. – Physical Rest
- I’m regularly taking a social media break at least on Sundays and also taking more time away from the laptop – Sensory Rest
- I cut back on the hours that I spend writing the blog and producing podcasts to increase my Creative Rest
- I’m enjoying afternoons resting and reading – Mental Rest
- My Emotional & Social rest has seen me stepping back from saying ‘yes’ and increasing my boundaries when needed
- I still need to work on my Spiritual Rest
My April Goal
I could list my exercises goals, my eating goals and other health related goals for April. However, my main health and wellness goal for April of bringing and maintaining harmony into my day and to stop striving for perfection and balance, encompasses all areas related to my health and activity for the month.

What a thought provoking post, Sue! You’re right. You hear balance all the time. We need to find balance for this and for that. We have to work on our physical balance or face falling. It’s all a bit much at times. I really like the idea of harmony…working on what needs extra attention and letting go of that which doesn’t. It’s such an interesting way of looking at life. I’m going to try to incorporate this thought into my life, too.

Hi Marsha, I had never contemplated Balance as being unrealistic but it makes so much sense, doesn’t it? Harmony is such a good word to describe all aspects of our lives. x
This is a fabulous post Sue and spot on with needing to look for harmony rather than balance in our lives. You’ve given fantastic examples of how we can do this and it’s something we all need to think about. Thank you for being such a great co-host, inspiring us to think more widely and look at how we spend our time.
It certainly made sense to me, Deb when my guest mentioned it to me. I had always hung my hat on ‘Balance’ but ‘Harmony’ is such a better way to live.
Hi, Sue – This is such an inspiring and thought-provoking post. Embracing harmony and focussing on a life that flows naturally and is flexible and aligned with our values makes great sense. Thank you also for the shoutout. <3
It certainly does makes sense, Donna and something I had never considered before the conversation with my guest. x
“my main health and wellness goal for April of bringing and maintaining harmony into my day and to stop striving for perfection and balance, encompasses all areas related to my health and activity for the month.”
This is an excellent overall goal. Sometimes by striving for perfection it can have the opposite effect.
I agree with you Carole about how striving for perfection can have the opposite effect. I do like the word harmony and how we can base our life around that rather than striving for the impossible. x
Great post Sue – it’s really got me thinking about flow and harmony. I find almost there is about as close to perfect as I get. After 5 weeks away though, it’s brought home to me how intentional I have to be – even though it’s learned behaviour for me. My instinct is to drop the boundaries and go with the flow, but I’m simply not sufficiently evolved to know when to pull the boundaries back up so have this constant love-hate battle with them. Hey ho.
Hi Jo, my mindset has been going through some changes over the last couple of years and I was finding it difficult to keep my motivation and enthusiasm. Harmony is such a lovely word and I feel much more at peace with myself after looking at my health and wellness this way. I do like to set my goals and I need structure but these days if I need to devote more time to an area I don’t feel quite so guilty. You will get back into it. 5 weeks of an amazing holiday will be difficult to readjust to normal life but give yourself some grace. x
This is very thought, provoking, Sue
Yes, it certainly gave me pause for thought and ‘harmony’ is much more inline with wellness isn’t it? x
Harmony and balance… they do indeed work in tandem, don’t they? I’ve never quite thought of it that way and you’ve got my thinking! Sometimes I over prioritize different aspects of my life and it gets me out of balance which then results in me feeling inner conflict. It’s in those moments that I do best to stop, reflect and pray and that often recenters me. Thanks for another great reminder, Sue!
Hello Laura, I had never thought of Harmony before but it certainly makes sense to me. I’ve been much more at peace with myself since adopting harmony over balance. Have a lovely week. x
