Welcome to the #wellnessreimagined link up co-hosted by Deb from Deb’s World, Donna from Retirement Reflections, Jennifer from The Retirement Phase and Jo from And Anyways .

Last month I wrote about Wellness Reimagined: Cultivating Harmony for a Life in Full Bloom and this month I want to put the focus on Heart Health and ways to keep Heart Healthy After 50.

Heart Week, Australia’s national heart health awareness week, is happening on 5–11 May so now’s the time to make sure you Never miss a BEAT!

With one Australian having a heart attack or stroke every 4 minutes, understanding your risk has never been more important. Join the 850,000 Australians who have already had their heart checked and book a Heart Health Check with your GP this Heart Week. You can also find some valuable information and resources from the Heart Foundation and I’ve included the link in this post.

The first step is to know your family medical history.

I try to eat healthy most of the time and make sure I have my regular mammogram and colonoscopy screenings because of my family history with breast cancer and bowel cancer. Dad also had heart problems but my blood tests have always shown good cholesterol levels so I haven’t been concerned.

A couple of years ago, I had a small health problem developing quietly, which I only found by accident, when I thought I was having a heart attack . I wrote about my experience in my post, Healthy Heart – Knowing your family medical history and now see a cardiologist annually to make sure there are no more surprises.

❤️ 7 Simple Ways to Stay Heart Healthy After 50

As we move into our 50s and beyond, taking care of our heart becomes more important than ever. But staying heart healthy doesn’t mean overhauling your entire life—it’s about making small, sustainable changes that support your well-being and help you thrive.

Here are 7 simple ways to keep your heart in top shape:

1. Get Moving Daily

You don’t need to run marathons (unless you want to!). A brisk 30-minute walk, a dance class, gardening, or swimming can do wonders. The goal? Move your body every day in a way that brings you joy. Regular activity helps lower blood pressure, improve cholesterol, and strengthen your heart.

2. Choose Heart-Loving Foods

Focus on eaing a rainbow of brightly coloured foods, leafy greens, whole grains, healthy fats (avocado and olive oil), nuts, legumes, and lean proteins like fish or chicken. Reduce processed foods and excess sugar. I eat a version of the Mediterranean diet as suggested by my cardiologist—it’s not just healthy, it’s delicious.

3. Manage Stress

Chronic stress can put pressure on your heart. Find what helps you unwind: meditation, deep breathing, yoga, journaling, or simply unplugging for a walk in nature. Even five minutes of calm can make a big difference.

4. Prioritize Sleep

Quality sleep is restorative for your entire body, especially your heart. Aim for 7–9 hours of sleep per night. Create a calming bedtime routine—limit screen time, enjoy a cup of herbal tea, or read a soothing book before bed.

5. Know Your Numbers

Stay on top of your blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, and weight. Regular checkups with your doctor can catch issues early and keep your heart on track. Knowledge is power when it comes to prevention.

6. Stay Connected

Loneliness can impact heart health. Nurture your relationships—call a friend, join a walking group, volunteer, or take a class. Emotional well-being is closely linked to physical health, especially in our second act of life.

7. Limit Alcohol and Quit Smoking

A glass of red wine occasionally, but moderation is key. And if you smoke, there’s no better time to quit.

Taking care of your heart isn’t just about living longer—it’s about living better.

You deserve a life that feels full of energy, love, and laughter. Start small, stay consistent, and celebrate every healthy choice you make. Your heart is the beat behind everything you do—let it thrive.

My April Goal

My main health and wellness goal for April was to bring and maintain harmony into my day and to stop striving for perfection and balance. For the most part I did achieve this, however, I did overdue one training session which left me with a very sore neck and trapezius (the muscle that joins up to the neck). For once, I didn’t push myself to continue and took a week’s rest from lifting weights until the body repaired itself.

It definitely was another example of how effective and sensible listening to your body and not pushing through is.

My May Goals – a mix of physical activity and activities that are good for the soul.

  • Walk daily
  • 2 strength sessions per week
  • 1 dedicated stretching/yoga per week
  • Back to healthier food choices after enjoying chocolate bunnies over Easter and family birthday cakes
  • Training for Brisbane Half Marathon 21.1km 1st June
  • Run with my daughter in the Mother’s Day Classic – a Mother’s Day tradition of ours in memory of my Mum
  • Attend QPAC to see the play – Dictionary of Lost Words. My daughter gave me tickets for Christmas and we will go together.
  • Enjoy a week at Caloundra to relax and spend quality time with my darling
  • Present at the ‘Redefining Aging Event’ in Brisbane
  • Skin Check – It’s Melanoma Month in May – have you had a skin check recently? My recent post provides more information on melanoma May is melanoma month

Your personal story is such a good example of why it’s so important to know our family history and stay proactive, even when we think things are fine. Hi Donna, like Cancer, I have a family history of heart disease so it is very important to me to stay on top of things. I have a cardiologist appointment later this year.

I just had my yearly visit with my PCP. I have a couple of little things going on that are being checked. Luckily, I seem to have inherited my mom’s genes as my heart and all related things are in good shape! Thanks for the tips, Sue!

Oh you are lucky Marsha with your genes. My genetic history has three types of cancer plus cardiovascular disease so I need to be vigilent. x

I love this Sue. Great tips for heart health. I agree with them all, and think I’d doing ok with all except for the sleep issue. I do prioritise it, but it just doesn’t happen. Great May goals also.

Hi Jen, I make a point of keeping on top of my health issues which are largely due to genetics. Sleep has been better for me lately for some reason. x
