Using our Age as a Superpower

April 22, 2024

In this episode of the Women Living Well After 50 Podcast, my guest is P.J. Wren, from Fitness with P.J. and Fitness Over 50. P.J. believes that using our age can be a superpower and we dived straight in to discovering why. During the conversation we discussed:

  • P.J.’ story and experience
  • How we can use our Age as our Superpower
  • Why we should measure our progress by the size of the Dumbbells not by the number on the Scale.
  • Taking the fear out of lifting Dumbbells – where to start – it’s all about progression
  • Non Scale victories
  • About Over 50 Fitness – The Wellness Platform
  • What being a Woman Living Well means to her

Meet P.J. Wren

As someone who has dedicated over three decades to being a certified personal trainer, fitness instructor, and coach for women over 40, I have seen the incredible benefits of lifting weights.

Now in my 50s, I am more convinced that strength training is essential to staying awesome as we age. Being physically strong not only helps us maintain an active and fulfilling lifestyle later in life but also gives us a sense of confidence and empowerment.

As women, we often underestimate our own strength. But with consistent strength training, we can show ourselves just how capable and powerful we are.

Through the years, I have owned multiple training studios and gyms, run cardiac rehab programs and produced and starred in my own fitness television show.

Currently, I am the CEO of two incorporations. Fitness with PJ has a large YouTube audience and online programs for women over 40 and women with osteoporosis. Over Fifty Fitness is an on-demand health and fitness platform for men and women over 50.

I’ve been featured in Women’s Fitness, CBC News and The Daily Telegraph and won the top 30 trainers of Canada in Impact magazine.

When I’m not filming workouts for the businesses, you can find me hiking with my loving husband and fur babies, Bella and George.

I am definitely going to look for her videos on YouTube. I’m also going to be upping my weights. I thought 2-3 pounds were good. Thanks for these podcasts, Sue!

Looking forward to listening to this

Eek, this scares me! I won’t be 50 for a long time, but I honestly couldn’t do strength training if my life depended on it (and I guess in a way it does). Maybe I should start really tiny though…

I really have to listen to this Sue, it didn’t seem to work properly in my car when I tried so I’ll give it another go and let you know! It’s perfect for how I’m feeling with my studio work and will give me a lift I know :). Thanks for giving us so many interesting people to listen to and for your interviewing skills.

Hi Lydia, I agree with PJ about the scales. I hope you find some inspiration from my chat with her. Enjoy your weekend. x

Well timed as I’m just about to invest in a set of dumbells!

Hi Sue, wow PJ sounds very inspiring! I will come back and listen to this podcast once I’ve caught up on my blogging duties. It’s very timely because though I do my yoga and pilates every morning and that sometimes includes some weights – usually just 0.5 to 1kg hand weights I am keen to up the ante and progress to heavier weights and a separate weights program for myself. So I will definitely be back to listen to the podcast and will follow up also by visiting PJ’s website and social media etc. Thanks so much to both of you. Thanks Sue for linking up again with #WWWhimsy – have a wonderful week! xo

I know most of us aren’t fans of strength training, Min but we really need to be lifting moderately heavy weights to get the impact. I hope you enjoy following PJ and listening to the podcast. Have a lovely weekend. x
