Over 50s Lifestyle What's Been On Your Calendar? WOTY 2023 - TIME

Using my Time wisely in 2023

January 1, 2023

It’s 2023! Happy New Year to you. Each year is another year I am grateful for and of late I’ve been pondering the fact that at 65 there are many more sunrises and sunsets behind me than ahead.

It is a cliché but we never really know what life will bring and in 2023 I am making the conscious decision and effort to use my TIME wisely. I am going to recognise the value of my time and not fritter it away doing things from obligation or guilt .

Time is a precious commodity, more so than money or possessions and one that many of us are guilty of taking for granted.

I know I can fall into the trap of wasting time on things because I haven’t taken the time to consider what I’m doing, or thinking that I have ‘all the time in the world’ to do things.

I was not going to select a Word of the Year this year, (which has been the case most years really). I don’t consciously think about it and then a word will keep popping up which I find difficult to ignore and here I am again starting the year with a word to focus on and to steer my life. You guessed it – the word is TIME! Nothing fancy just practical.

  • Time out
  • Time management
  • Limited Time
  • Time Keeper
  • Balanced Time
  • Moment in Time
  • Timeless
  • Fun Times

So many ways we can discuss TIME and writing about how I’m living my WOTY will certainly help keep it front and centre. I would also love to hear your thoughts on how you spend your TIME and perhaps give me some ideas along the way.

Time can be broken down into various activities but there will be plenty of time for

  • Rest and Relaxtion.
  • Exploring
  • Creativity
  • Moving my body in a variety of exercise that I enjoy
  • Learning and growth
  • Reading
  • Connecting
  • Loving
  • Discovering
  • Laughing & Playing
  • Trying new things
  • Travelling

Previous Word of the Year Selections

Each year from 2016 I’ve chosen a WOTY and I’ve usually selected my word as early as November. My previous WOTY have included:

  • 2016 I wanted to find more BALANCE in my life.
  • 2017 I wanted to SIMPLIFY.
  • 2018 I wanted to THRIVE and in
  • 2019 I chose two words – COMMIT AND EVOLVE.
  • 2020 I chose a statement – MAKE IT HAPPEN
  • 2021 I chose to put the focus on SELF and where I was placing my energy ‘I needed to embrace my SELF and live my life with the focus of keeping what SERVES me WELL and LETTING GO of what is holding me back and making me feel trapped in life
  • 2022 I chose BE – Just BE – living life your way

Looking at the list, I suppose TIME has been a part of it all and yet I feel the need to actually use the word and give it full attention.

I think Pink Floyd sums it up in their song TIME especially the lyrics. I want to make this year count

And then one day you find
Ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run
You missed the starting gun

Time, Pink Floyd

How will you use your TIME in 2023? Have you chosen a WOTY or a goal or intention? Are you just going to go with the flow and enjoy each moment as it comes? I would love to hear your thoughts.

Sue, I love your choice of word for 2023. One thing that has been running through my mind a lot lately is that I need to be much more intentional about how I spend my TIME. Being older than you I am also very conscious of having more years behind me than ahead and also because off my husbands I’ll health, I need to balance my time between self care and caring for him and am aware that I have allowed self care to slip into the background which is not good for either him or me.
My word for last year was RECLAIM, but as I have come to the end of 2022 was thinking about how I failed miserably in reclaiming any part of myself and was going to keep that as my word for 2023, but as I pondered on that, I realised I need to RELEASE last year and RESET for 2023. So they are my 2 words for this year. Xx

Thank you, Chris for your comment and firstly let me say YOU DID NOT FAIL in 2022. Life happened and you handled it brilliantly with all that was thrown at you. I love you two words for 2023 and let’s make them happen for you! Thanks for sharing xx

Hi Sue – Time is a great word and I love that it has so many aspects and dimensions to it. I’m sharing my WOTY tomorrow and I’m hoping it will give me the time to breathe and recalibrate after 2022 and all the unexpected hip stuff that set me back a bit. Happy New Year and I think it’s going to be a good one for us all. xx

Hi Leanne, Time is such a simple word but a powerful one as our lives are based on time and how we use it. Happy New Year and yes I can feel the positive anticipation for 2023 surrounding me. xx

Time is a very good choice for WOTY and how you use your time is important to reflect on wherever you are in life – making time for what’s important and matters to you, using time wisely to avoid stress. I love your statement about not wasting time out of obligation or guilt.
I have some different goals for this year and if I manage to collect them in one word, then I’ll have a WOTY, I’ll share whatever it’ll be in Denyse’s linkup on Wednesday.

Happy New Year, Susanne! Time kept popping into my head and perhaps as I get older is becoming even more precious. It has been lovely getting to know you during 2022 and I look forward to continuing our connection, sharing our thoughts and ideas in 2023. xx

Such a great choice – and I love the song too. Coincidentally I read an article this morning – I think it was in The Times – about how Marie Kondo is kondo-ing time these days… a way of working out just how much time we waste on things and activities that are of low importance to us. Look forward to cheering you on.

    • Reply Sue Loncaric January 4, 2023 at 07:17

Hi Jo, yes the song is one of our favourites and the words are so poignant for any ‘time’ of life. Interesting about Marie Kondo’s idea – I should check that out and thank you for the tip. Looking forward to continuing our friendship during 2023 – Happy New Year, my friend. xx

Hi, Sue – Time is such incredible gift that is sadly way too easy to take for granted. This is a very powerful focus word. I look forward to following along and seeing how this WOTY helps shape your year ahead. Wishing you a wonderful 2023 year ahead!

    • Reply Sue Loncaric January 4, 2023 at 07:19

Everyone does take Time for granted don’t they, Donna? It isn’t usually until our time is threatened that we take notice but then, sometimes it is too late. I’m hoping that my focus will bring peace and contentment to my life not just for 2023 but beyond. Thank you for your continuing friendship and looking forward to sharing 2023 and our life experiences together. xx

Hi Sue, I love your choice of WOTY as Time is so ‘timely’ and important in our busy lives. I can’t wait to see where you go with it this year and always enjoy your monthly posts on your WOTY. Choosing to prioritise your time is a really good way of looking ahead to the new year. I also like that Pink Floyd song, the lyrics are perfect! Happy New Year my friend 🙂

I’m happy with my choice, which as usual came late in the game. I know you’ve used it before and I’m curious to see how the word will unfold for me in 2023. Happy New Year, my friend and here’s to using our Time well and enjoying life xx

Hi Sue, Time is a great WOTY. It could apply to many areas of our lives and most of us would be interested in what you have to say. I haven’t decided on a word yet. I’ve thought of many, but nothing that resonates. If I don’t come up with something soon, I might go wordless in 2023.

    • Reply Sue Loncaric January 5, 2023 at 10:28

Hi Jen, it is an easy WOTY and you don’t really need to select one. Sometimes we just need to get on with life, enjoy it and not make it too complicated. Good luck in your new job x

Congratulations on selecting such a flexible word. TIME is so precious, yet we seem to think we have plenty of it. And at “times” we wonder, where did that “time” go? I can see you playing along with TIME in a great, positive and helpful FOR you manner! Thank you so much for returning to Wednesday’s Words and Pics Link Up in 2023. I look forward to continuing the blogging community connection this year. May your year go well. Denyse.

Yes TIME is very flexible Denyse and I’m looking forward to 2023 and enjoying my time. x

Hello Sue…..yes your choice of TIME will work well for you as you pause for a little while. Giving ourselves not enough of it when our bodies are sending us this message subliminally must never be ignored …..especially as the decades add up! Accept and embrace your TIME to recover.

Hi Pauline, yes TIME has been plentiful lately as I was under strict instructions from the cardio to do no strenuous exercise. Happy to say I can now go back to running but I’m enjoying my daily walk around the lake – it’s a lovely way to start my day x
