Okay so we are into May, the weather is warmer (in the northern hemisphere) and after a long, cold winter you are feeling motivated to get into some Spring Cleaning – right?

No more putting off those jobs that have been niggling you throughout winter.


Spring is such a beautiful season.  A time of renewal and growth and the perfect time to get not only our house in order but also look at spring cleaning our life.  In fact, Spring Cleaning your home is not just healthy for your physical well-being but also it is a great boost for mental health.

How to Spring Clean your Environment

Make a plan

Before you start make a list of all the jobs you want to complete and tick them off as they are finished.  It is easier to do this room by room and include those jobs you just forget about generally like cleaning behind the furniture or those pesky fan blades.

This will not only make life easier and ensure you cover all areas, but you feel a sense of accomplishment and feel motivated to keep going as each completed job is ticked off the list.

Know the hidden hazards

Did you know that there are many homes that still have asbestos.  You need to be aware of this BEFORE YOU START SPRING CLEANING.  If you have an asbestos problem, call in the professionals to remove it.  Asbestos is a killer and can cause Mesothelioma and aggressive form of cancer that can affect the lining of the lungs. Use gloves and protective clothing

Sometimes using harsh chemicals can damage our skin so always wear gloves and if necessary protective clothing.  Better still why not use natural cleaning products such as bicarb soda to reduce the risk.  For more ideas on making natural cleaning products click on this link

Don’t leave cleaning products lying around

Some cleaning products are POISONOUS so if you have a family or pets, make sure you have the products well out of reach.

Keep, give away or throw away

For a thorough spring clean I usually include taking an inventory my wardrobe and items around the house.  Clothes that I don’t wear or items that I don’t use anymore or have forgotten about.

Make three piles – those you want to keep, those items that you want to give away and those that just need to be binned.  Be ruthless and DECLUTTER! The cathartic affect is great for your mind as well as making more room in your home.  Encourage the children to do the same with their toys.

      Thanks Debbie and it is autumn here but I usually do an autumn stocktake of clothes and other jobs around the house. It makes you feel motivated I think!

          Yes Deb you are right. In fact, Kathleen told me she does a good clean every 3 months which is probably much better than one big clean per year!

    Your post inspired me–I think I’ll have my housekeepers do spring cleaning next month. Thank GOD I no longer clean my own house. It never was one of my strengths!

      Oh you are lucky having a housekeeper Carol! I would love one but that is okay I’m not the world’s greatest housekeeper but my philosophy is that you can visit my home and it is always tidy and would ALMOST pass the white glove test! Besides there are so many more exciting things to do in life isn’t there?

      Oh that sounds lovely – my daughter just had her bathroom remodelled and I swear she took a 30 minute shower the first time! They are loving it and my grandson finally has a bath to splash about it.

    Great tips for my house and my mind! I must admit, being a Virgo – I do not do well with clutter. My husband and I share an office. You can tell whose desk is whose! The hardest part for me is my closet. My rule is if I haven’t worn it in 3 years – it should go! However, there are times I regret this!

      I’m on the cusp of Leo and Virgo Ellen so it is a battle field in my mind LOL:) I do like order and I’m not great with clutter either.     Ah, spring cleaning! I love having it done…I’m not great at wanting to do it, though! 🙂 But there really is something about getting it done that feels like a fresh start. Love this quote: “Stop worrying and start doing – make changes if you have to but try to remove stress and worry from your life.” “Start” is a powerful word!

      that is a great quote Wendy and I love the word ‘Start’ that is all we really need to do. Once we make a Start then we usually can keep going and achieve whatever we want. It is the starting that is sometimes difficult!
