Throughout the month I’ve been focusing on Positive Aging and I’ve interviewed some fabulous Women 50+ who have shared their thought on what Positive Aging means to them.  If you missed any you can catch up at The Positive Aging Interviews and they are well worth reading.  These women are gorgeous and wonderful and enjoying life in their 50s, 60s & 70s.  They are certainly wonderful role models for us all.

To complete the Positive Aging Interviews series, I thought: ‘Why not interview myself?’.  Some of my regular readers know me but there may be others who would be interested on why I think Positive Aging is Positively Wonderful.

So let me introduce ME!  Sue from Sizzling Towards 60 & Beyond

What does the term positive aging mean to you?

I love the term ‘positive aging’!  So many people view the aging process as a negative part of life however midlife and beyond can be one of the best phases of our life.  Positive Aging to me is all about being the best version of yourself and to embrace life and what is has to offer rather than giving up and just waiting to die.

What are your tips for keeping fit and healthy as you age?

Although I had been fit in my younger years, life took over with family and work and keeping fit was put on the back burner.  At 50 I started to run and then ran a marathon at age 55 which made me realise I could do anything if I had the right attitude.  Of course, running isn’t for everyone but my philosophy on keeping fit and healthy is to make it a lifestyle in mind, body and spirit.

Find an exercise you love and do it regularly, try to include some light weight training – walking is a great way to keep fit!  Forget Diets!  Eating a sensible well-balanced diet and have the occasional treat.  Make sure you look after your mental health and well-being by taking time to breathe and relax.

What is one piece of advice you wish you had known when you were younger?

Be true to yourself and don’t worry what other people think. Celebrate who you are as an individual. I’ve wasted too much time worrying about that and worry is such a wasted emotion,

What is your favourite fashion or beauty tip?

Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise and use a sunscreen.  Living in Australia in a hot, humid climate means we need to protect our skin.  We have the highest rate of melanoma in Australia because growing up we thought it was cool to lay in the sun for hours to get a tan.

Your blog is called ‘Sizzling Towards 60 & Beyond’ tell us how you came up with the name and a little about your blog?

I started my blog after I retired because I felt lost and with no purpose.  I had worked full-time most of my adult life and retiring early to be with my husband was a shock to the system – after the initial euphoria of not having to work wore off.  I wanted to encourage women to be the best version of themselves and to be fit, fabulous, healthier and happier in midlife and beyond.

Originally it was Sizzling Towards 60 but now that I’ve recently turned 60 I decided to add ‘& Beyond’ because I’ll still be Sizzling that is for sure!

What is your advice for those about to retire or who have retired to ensure they enjoy this special time of life?

Have a plan – financially and also mentally.  As much as I would love to travel all the time that just isn’t reality.  We are living longer and in better health so you need to plan ahead and know that you can afford the lifestyle you have been working towards.  You also need to know how you will enjoy your time – retire from work not life!

What is your favourite way to relax?

I love escaping to our apartment on the Gold Coast with my husband. It is near the ocean so all I need is a good book and a glass of bubbly or red and I’m set.  Funnily enough I also love running with my Saturday Sisters – a group of friends who love to run.  Exercise relaxes me by reducing stress and lifting my mood.

What was the last book you read?

I love reading and always make time for that.  The last book I read was Daughters-In-Law by Joanna Trollope.  It was an easy but interesting read about the relationship between a Woman and her Daughters-In-Law and the dynamics within the family because of the varying personalities.

    I’m so glad you interviewed yourself Sue! You are the epitome of positive aging and have been so generous with sharing others’ ideas and thoughts. I love your response about forgetting diets, just eat sensibly and have the occasional treat! Thanks again for having me join in this series, it’s been great to be involved.

    We have so much in common Sue – your advice to your younger self is exactly what I would have given myself, I love your “retire from work, not from life” world view and I just realized we even read the same books – I really enjoyed that Joanna Trollope book too!
