The meaning of Self-Care

The Meaning of Self-Care

Part of my own plan for Self-Care in September was to ask guests to write posts so I could take a well earned holiday to Alaska and Canada with my husband. Sometimes we try to take on far too much and then we start losing our mojo. I was at that stage and am sure that the break will do me some good.

My first guest, is one of my dearest blogging friends, Debbie Harris from Deb’s World. Deb is a dear friend of mine and has been co-hosting my monthly themes for a couple of months. Life has recently thrown her and her family a curve ball but knowing Deb is strong enough to face these challenges and also provide the support her daughter needs at this time. Deb is taking a break from blogging, as she explains HERE but still made time to write her Self-Care post before her break.

In her post, Deb shares her meaning of Self-Care and has some good advice on how we can incorporate this into our life.

The meaning of Self-Care

It’s always good to be invited to be a guest with Sue and here I am again!

As September is all about Self-Care, I’m writing a post about what it means to me.

I am getting quite good at self-care, especially since I am now retired, and I have more flexibility. Life is generally run at a slower pace (supposedly).

I’m getting good at listening to my body.

Meaning of Self-Care:

the practice of taking an active role in protecting one’s own well-being and happiness, in particular during periods of stress.

“expressing oneself is an essential form of self-care”

I think blogging is an essential form of self-care for me J I wrote a post recently about settling for a mediocre life and losing my mojo and I share some tips on how to take care of ourselves.

If I need a day of reading my book, or I feel like cooking, or catching up with friends then I make these things happen.  My time is more my own and I’m the queen of flexibility!

My Meaning of Self-Care

I have written these points to highlight my thoughts on self-care – everyone has their own ideas but these are mine:

S          self-care is not about being selfish

E          Exercise regularly

L          Laugh, listen and love

F          Friends, family and fun

C          Caring for yourself

A          Ask and accept help when you need it

R          Relaxation, recovery, rest

E          Eating well – most of the time!

A quote I recently featured on my Monday Musings says it all –

It is not your job to be everything for everyone!

Thanks for having me as a guest again Sue. It was good to re-read my words and now I must take my own advice!

My pleasure my friend and I hope you are doing okay. Yes, like me we need to take our own advice, don’t we? Take care xx

Hi Deb – lovely to see you over here guesting on Sue’s blog. There seems to have been a lot written about self-care lately and I think it’s because it’s such an important area that we’ve all neglected earlier in our lives. Walking away from the stress and drama of work and settling into retired life gives us more time to look after ourselves and I know I feel a lot calmer as a result (should have done it a lot sooner!)

Hi, Sue – I’m glad to see you following your own advice and taking a well-deserved break. I look forward to meeting you soon!
Hi, Deb – It’s lovely to see you here again, especially during your own blogging break. Sending warm thoughts your way!

Hello Sue and Deb! I hope you are both taking full advantage of your blogging breaks. These thoughts on self-care really hit home for me, as I’m not feeling my best this morning and I’ve been trying to just push through. Maybe that’s not the best tactic. 🙂
