Gratitude.  Being grateful for what we have. Thanking God for our blessings. Saying “thank you” in response to a kind gesture.  All of these things make a difference in our attitude, outlook and relationships.

What place does gratitude have in your life?

Having a grateful heart can be hard – especially at midlife. We are bombarded with negative news 24/7. And then there are other things that seem to come up even more often or more specifically at this time of life.

  • Losing loved ones
  • Health issues
  • Living on a less income than we have before
  • Feelings of regret over the past
  • Anxiety about the future

Focus on these very real things can definitely steal our joy. But the thing is – we don’t have to focus on the negative. We can choose to be grateful for the good things.

One way to be intentional about a practice of gratitude is by writing down the things you are grateful for in a gratitude journal. Somehow the practice of writing it down makes those wonderful blessings much more concrete. And you can go back look at them over and over.

Here are several ways to keep a gratitude journal. 

1. It can be as simple as just getting a spiral notebook and writing down 3 things you are grateful for every day.

2. Sometimes it can be helpful to have a prompt like these:

3. If you want to be a little more fancy, get one of these pre-printed journals complete with prompts, quotes and beautiful artwork:

And don’t forget a set of pretty colorful pens to write with – especially if you are a Bullet Journal person.

I’m not much of a pen to paper writer.  So I prefer the online journal Penzu. It’s free, user friendly and 100% customizable. And you can even use Penzu on your phone!

    Great ideas for making a gratitude journal. I am also more of an online person rather than pen and paper and enjoyed the tips.

      I started keeping a gratitude journal back in the 90’s when Sara Ban Breathnach first visited Oprah. I have boxes full of them! Over the years I’ve slacked off but, I still keep one on my nightstand in case. It really does change your outlook when you consciously focus on the good. That’s much harder to do these days, sadly, but worth the effort in trying.

    I think we should make a point of including gratitude in our SaD posts. Would have been fun to make each sentence for one month a statement of gratitude. Or maybe we could start making our Sunday sentences gratitude sentences? You think the gals would go for that?

    I keep a daily gratitude journal . I write down 10 things each morning before I get up. It helps me start the day in balance

    Gratitude is so important – I don’t write stuff down very often – I tend to start and then feel guilty for forgetting! I walk each morning and often go through a few of the many things I’m grateful for as I enjoy my stroll.

      It can be, but it stretches me to acknowledge really small things, like the bus arriving just I get to the stop. Or getting an expensive item on sale. I also have to think about an 11th – something someone has done for me.
      I do have a couple of standard thank you that I say each day.
