Why taking a break is important for our health and happiness

Why taking a break is important for our health and happiness

I’m a little excited – no I’m a lot excited!

Tomorrow, I’m jetting off with my husband to Tokyo where we will pick up a 14 day  Fall Foliage Cruise of Japan with Princess Cruises.  About this time last year we were heading to Spain and Italy as part of my 60th birthday celebrations and I wonder where this year has gone.

If you read my Virtual Coffee Catch Up posts you will see that I like to keep busy.  I have a full life – my choice – but sometimes that can take it’s toll and I need to remember that life is more than blogging, volunteering, spending time with family and grandchildren, running and keeping fit.

Phew I’m tired just reading that last paragraph!

In addition to a busy life, my husband has been through some stressful times with health this year and although he is fine now, we both need some quality time away together.

We all need time for rest and relaxation with a little adventure thrown in for good measure.  Our health and well being depends on us taking care of ourselves and knowing when we need to slow down or take a break.

The cruise has a number of ‘at sea’ days so plenty of time for relaxing as well as discovering Japan when we are in various ports of call.

Why taking a break is important for our health and happiness

As I prepare for my vacation I am thinking about why we need a break and the benefits.  I’ve compiled my top four reasons and perhaps you can add to the list.

1. The need to step out of our world for a time

Life is hard, let’s face it!  Everyone can get caught up in the stresses of life so taking time to step out of our individual worlds gives our body, mind a spirit, the opportunity to rest, recover and recharge.

2. Clear the mind and restore the soul

Taking a break from technology and day-today living clears our mind.  We can actually think, or not, ponder, or not.  We relieve our mind and soul of the pressures that technology can bring to our lives.  We can feel free and actually break the habit of checking in on social media too frequently.

3. Enjoy a new environment or new experiences

Taking a break provides the opportunity to explore a new environment or experience.  Some of us like to laze by the beach with a good book, or travel to explore new cultures.

4.The opportunity to re-discover yourself

Taking a break provides the opportunity away from ‘your world’ to examine who you are.  You might surprise yourself by trying new things or just take the opportunity to reflect on life, where you have been, where you are now and where you would like to be.

How do you know when to take a break?

Your mind and body will tell you – so listen.

My blog, Sizzling Towards 60 & Beyond is my passion so I’m feeling a little disconcerted about not posting over the next two weeks.  I know that quite a few of my blogging friends have taken their Summer vacation from blogging and when I think about taking the break I have to admit I feel some relief.

That tells me that I need to take a complete break and recharge my creative batteries.

So my friends, apart from scheduling posts for the Midlife Share the Love Party link up, you won’t be hearing from me until after October 17.

I’m so looking forward to relaxing on the ship and also discovering Japan and it’s culture.  No doubt, I will have some stories to share with you on my return.

I might pop the odd photo on Instagram or Facebook but that will be the extent of my connection with you all.

I have my Capsule Wardrobe packing list, passports and documentation are ready and now it is just a matter of getting to the airport on time.

Take care everyone and I look forward to reconnecting with you when I return.  See you on the 17th!

Have you plans to take a break and recharge? Perhaps you should be thinking about one.

Have an absolutely fantastic time away Sue. You’re right, it’s so important to take a break from the pressures and stresses of every day life, and simply to disconnect. Having just returned from a few days camping by the coast I can only imagine how refreshed you’ll feel after your lovely break. Enjoy!! xx

Thanks Miriam! This year has been tough ( I don’t write about that part of my life) so it will be great to have a break. Any break is helpful isn’t it? I now just have to see if the typhoons in Japan yesterday and one on the way will affect where we are going. You can’t predict the weather, can you? Enjoy, my friend. xx

So excited for you Sue! Enjoy every minute of it and come back feeling refreshed and invigorated. I agree it’s good to take a break and your points are very true. Have fun xx

Thank you Deb, I think I really need it, although I need to check if Japan is still there! Another typhoon passed through yesterday and one on the way 🙁 You can’t predict the weather can you? x

Thanks so much Deb! We’ve had a rough year to be honest so it will be good to recharge and have some quality time together. Thank you for your good wishes and look for the photos I post on Instagram or FB. It won’t be daily but when I can. xx

I’m really looking forward to some downtime Trisha. This year has had quite a few ups and downs so having a break is just what I need. Don’t worry I will return and the response I’ve had and good wishes from you and my readers is much appreciated. Have a beautiful week and I will probably post some photos while I’m away on FB and Instagram. xx

Have a wonderful time… relax and enjoy. I am seriously thinking about taking a blogging break too, maybe at the end of the year, so I completely understand the need to take a step back. We will miss you (but no pressure 🙂 ).

Thank you Janis, I do need a break but it is lovely to know I will be missed! xx

Lots of photos please!! Can’t wait to see them! Have a wonderful time!

    • Reply Sue Loncaric October 1, 2018 at 07:30

Yes Lydia, that is one thing I will share on FB or Instagram. Although I’ve just seen a typhoon has hit Japan so who knows we might not get there! Fingers crossed and every other part of my body that I can cross! 🙂

Hi Sue – I agree with your four points. I spread my trips throughout the year for similar reasons. Japan is one of my favourite destinations. Even with the typhoons, the cruise organizers may tweak the itinerary to ensure their passengers have a safe and enjoyable trip. Have a restful and wonderful time! #lifethisweek

Hi Natalie, I’m sure we will be fine but one thing you can’t control is the weather so you just have to make the best of it! xx

I couldn’t agree with you more! This year we’ve made an effort to take some time out (almost) every month – sometimes it’s just a weekend away and sometimes it’s a longer holiday but we always return home with rested and refreshed. Have a fabulous trip, I can’t wait to hear all about it, I’ve always wanted to go to Japan!

    • Reply Sue Loncaric October 1, 2018 at 08:53

Hi Sammie, great idea about a weekend away each month as we can’t always afford the time or expense of a long holiday. A weekend break can be just as restful can’t it? I’m looking forward to Japan, typhoons and all 🙂

Sue, I’m so happy for you! You are such a busy blogger and always have well-written and thought-out posts to share! I can’t wait to hear about your cruise and to see the photos! Bon Voyage!

Thanks for the good wishes, Terri. I’m looking forward to relaxing and clearing my mind whilst enjoying new adventures. xx

Bon Voyage my friend and happy sailing! If you can walk away from your blog for a couple of weeks then you know it’s definitely time for a break. The world continues on without us and you’ll be back before you know it. I think the best part of vacations is living in the moment and savouring having so much time to yourself – enjoy it all and I’ll look forward to the occasional pic on FB xx

    • Reply Sue Loncaric October 1, 2018 at 10:06

Thanks my friend. I’m actually feeling a weight lifted so it is time for a break and some R&R. Two weeks will fly and I look forward to hopefully bringing some stories back for the blog. xx

Hi, Sue – I am now a huge advocate of taking breaks — especially technology breaks. I wish I would have learned the importance of this much earlier!
As you wisely stated, if you think of taking a break, and the thought of that break fills you with relief — you’re body, mind and spirit are telling you that it’s time. Enjoy your well-deserved time away. We’ll all be here waiting to hear more when you get back!

    • Reply Sue Loncaric October 1, 2018 at 11:00

Hi Donna, I have learned from you my friend and I can feel a sense of relief. This year has not been easy for various reasons so I’m looking forward to some time away where I don’t have to be ‘on’ all the time. Thank you for your friendship and support which means a great deal to me. xx

Have a wonderful trip Sue and enjoy the break! It does us good to have a break from the blog. I am very passionate about my blog too but it takes a lot of my time and can deplete me at times. We all need to take a break for our own health and happiness. Don’t feel any guilt or worry whatsoever! I look forward to seeing some piccies and hearing all about your adventures. My son is heading to Japen next Sunday 7 Oct. I hope that for both you and he there are no more natural disasters and that Japan is aok after the latest typhoon. Safe and happy travels Sue! xo

Enjoy your much needed break Sue! I’m like you, I need to be occupied but it can be hard to toe that fine line between keeping yourself busy and not pushing yourself into the ground. Enjoy every moment and come back refreshed and recharged x

I am overdue for a break but sadly it doesn’t look like I’ll be permitted one for another month. Work schedules are a bit frustrating to me right now!! The long weekend has been nice but it’s not a real break.

The cruise sounds amazing and I can’t wait to hear all about it when you’re back. Enjoy the recharge and scenery.

I’m so excited for you, Sue! I agree that a break from our daily life, whatever that may be, can be so refreshing and needed. You are going to have a wonderful time with your man! My life doesn’t allow for any lengthy breaks, but I’m looking forward to my kids and grand kids coming this week, so will spend some quality time with them. Can’t wait! xo
