Surviving a Midlife Marriage Breakdown

August 12, 2024

Did you know that 33% of Australian marriages are expected to end in divorce? That’s a sobering thought and having been there over 30 years ago, I know from personal experience the stress and major changes that divorce or separation brings.

In this episode of the Women Living Well After 50 Podcast, my guest is Kathy Marris from 50 shades of Age. Kathy has recent experience of her own marriage breakdown and bravely shares her story as well as providing tips on surviving and looking forward to a new chapter of life.

During the interview we discussed:

  • Kathy’s experience
  • Some of the main causes of a marriage breakdown
  • The Empty Shell Marriage – what it means
  • Overcoming the emotions such as fear, failure, guilt and embarrassment
  • Practical tips on surviving this traumatic event

Hi Debbie, I thought Kathy was very brave and actually opened up more than I expected her to. She had some good advice and it is great to see her coming through the other side feeling happier and stronger. x

Thank you to Kathy for sharing this. And thank you to Sue for another thought-provoking interview. I just went down a little bit of a rabbit hole and discovered that currently 40% of Canadian marriages end in divorce. That is much higher than I would have guessed.

Kathy was very brave sharing her experience, Donna. I’ve known her for some time and it is wonderful to see her getting back on her feet again. You and I have both been there and it isn’t pleasant. Luckily we both have met wonderful partners to share our lives with. Those divorce stats are getting rather high aren’t they? x

What if only one of the couple wants to keep the marriage and the other is no longer happy in the marriage, how do you deal with that?

That’s a difficult one but as Kathy explains in her interview, she knew she had to walk away despite a marriage of 40 years. She owed it to herself to leave an unhappy relationship.

I love hearing from you and your comments are important to me
