Thursday Thought: The Unseen, the Intuitive, and the Inner Voice

Each month one of the members selects a topic/prompt and this month Suzy Turner, selected ‘Supernatural‘ for this month’s ‘Tell Us About prompt.

For the Tell Us About Prompts I try to align the prompt with my WOTY – Bloom. I decided to look at Supernatural from a different perspective and in particular our intuition and inner voice.

The Unseen, the Intuitive, and the Inner Voice

Have you ever had that quiet tug at your gut that said, “Don’t go there”, or “Say yes to this”, even when logic said otherwise?

Whether we call it intuition, gut instinct, or something supernatural, there’s a deep inner knowing that guides us — if we pause long enough to listen.

Albert Einstein once said:

“The intuitive mind is a sacred gift and the rational mind is a faithful servant.”

And Rumi, with his wisdom, reminds us:

“There is a voice that doesn’t use words. Listen.”

As we move through life — especially after 50 — many of us find ourselves becoming more attuned to that silent wisdom. We trust our feelings more. We notice signs. We begin to realise that not everything can be explained… and that maybe it doesn’t need to be.

Intuition often shows up in small moments:

• The sudden feeling to call a friend — and finding they needed to hear your voice.
• A dream that offers clarity when you wake.
• The sense of someone who’s passed away still walking beside you.

It may not always make sense, but it always has meaning and it happens to me often.

Intuition: A Scientific Perspective

Study on Intuition and Decision-Making:
A study conducted by researchers at the University of New South Wales, including Joel Pearson, demonstrated that individuals could utilize unconscious emotional information to make faster, more accurate, and more confident decisions. Participants were exposed to emotional images outside of their conscious awareness while making decisions, and the results indicated that even without conscious recognition, this information influenced their choices positively. Belief in the Supernatural

Whilst I haven’t experienced what I consider the supernatural, I do have an open mind and I know friends who have experiences they have shared with me.

Pew Research Center Findings:
According to a 2009 survey by the Pew Research Center, nearly one in five U.S. adults (18%) reported having seen or been in the presence of a ghost. Additionally, 29% stated they had felt in touch with someone who had already died. (pewresearch.org)

Recent Data on Spiritual Experiences:
A more recent Pew Research Center survey from 2023 found that 53% of U.S. adults said they had ever been visited by a dead family member in a dream or other form. Furthermore, 34% had felt the presence of a dead relative in the past year, and 15% reported that dead family members communicated with them. (pewresearch.org)

Gender Differences in Supernatural Beliefs

Higher Propensity Among Women:
Research indicates that women are more likely than men to believe in spiritual or paranormal phenomena, which is not surprising to me. This trend is attributed to various factors, including sociocultural influences and a greater tendency among women to rely on intuition. For instance, a study published in Psychology Today discusses how societal expectations and gender roles may contribute to this difference in belief systems. (psychologytoday.com)

Take a quiet moment today and ask yourself:

• When was the last time I listened to my intuition?
• Did I trust it… or brush it aside?
• What would happen if I gave that inner voice more space?
