Stepping Outside my Comfort Zone

This post was originally written for my AtoZ Challenge in 2016 – AtoZ Guide for a Healthier, Happier Lifestyle.  I decided to repost and reinvent it, as Leslie from Once Upon A Time, Happily Ever After has started a new series ‘Stepping Outside My Comfort Zone.  She has set down the challenge for us all to Step Out of our Comfort Zone each month, so you might want to pop over and read her ideas and her plans for the Challenge.

I’m not sure yet what I will be trying but I’m motivated and inspired to start thinking of things to do.  I’m revisiting my own advice on 3 ways to get started on breaking out and challenging myself.  I hope you are inspired to try something new as well.

Are you stuck in a rut?

Do you fear change?

Most of us would answer ‘YES’ to these two questions.  Life is like that – ESPECIALLY AT MIDLIFE, where we have been juggling different roles such as wife, mother, employee, or even the boss.

However, it isn’t just at midlife at we can fall into our ‘comfort zone’.

challenge yourself

At some point in our lives, we all get comfortable with what we are doing and then we fear changing because we aren’t sure of the outcome.

We ignore the little voice in our head that pipes up from time to time asking – ‘IS THIS ALL THERE IS?’

We may have even lost our identity along the way.  How often have you been introduced as ‘so and so’s’ wife or mother or daughter?

Then comes the time when our children fly from the nest to live their own lives, we aren’t so busy with our careers and we still have that nagging little voice!

Well it is time to Break Out of your Comfort Zone and let your inner Voice be Heard!Click To Tweet

Before you go running off to climb Mt Everest, or sail solo around the world, you need to realise that it won’t necessarily be easy or ‘comfortable’ and this is what usually stops us from exploring exactly what we are capable of achieving.

“Fear can hold us back but YOU CAN OVERCOME FEAR. “

I recently wrote a Guest Post “How You Can Remove But From Your Vocabulary and Achieve Your Dream”.  In it I talk about the fact that we are only held back by our own fears. It is surprising how empowered you feel when you pull your shoulders back and face your fears head on.

It is all about Attitude!

Ask yourself two questions:

What is the worst that can happen?

And

What is the best that can happen?

You can take the negative route and give up or you can weigh up the benefits and take that leap of faith in yourself.

What if I Fall

Here are 3 simple steps to get you started on your journey out of your comfort zone.

1. Define what you want to change in your life

Be realistic and don’t try to change everything all at once. You don’t have to make huge changes immediately as long as you start the process.  We can still achieve what we want by making smaller changes along the way.  You will feel more confident with each small change you make.

2. Write it down

Write down what you want to change in your life and stick it in a place where you will see it everyday as a reminder to keep moving forward.

3. Try Something New

Challenge yourself by trying something new – learn a language, learn to dance or sing, join a sporting group. Putting yourself out there to try new things will mix life up a little and bring back the enthusiasm for life that can happen when we are just going through the motions of living.

What is one thing you would like to change in your life TODAY?

Great advice, Sue. We all need to nudge ourselves from time to time. As you know, one of my recent mini adventures was to ride the airport bus and subway in Santiago, Chile on my first visit to a city of 7 million people. I did not get lost and made it home safe and sound to write about the experience 🙂
