A month of Worthy Causes & Stepping out of my comfort zone #WBOYC?

October 27, 2023

What’s Been On Your Calendar? October 2023.

Well October zipped by in a blink, didn’t it? The Jacarandas are in full bloom and despite the purple carpet when these delicate blooms fall, they are a delight to behold.

I’m getting very excited as in two weeks we fly away to Europe. We are flying to Amsterdam for 5 nights then taking a 7 night Viking Rhine Getaway River cruise down to Basel in Switzerland. We then travel to Milan for 6 nights. I’m hoping to get to some Christmas markets although most won’t be starting until the week after we leave.

What’s Been On My Calendar in October?

October was busy and the focus for me was promoting and supporting worthy causes for the Heart Foundation and also the Cancer Council as well as stepping out of my comfort zone to model some lingerie! Yes, me modelling lingerie at 66 – who would have thought and another first for me.

October was also Menopause Awareness Month spotlighting Cardiovascular Disease. This was very timely as I had been diagnosed recently with CV. It was also Breast Cancer Awareness month and as my Mum died from breast cancer at 63 many years ago, this was a cause close to my heart. October 20 is my Mum’s birthday and she would have been 97 this year.

Mum

I started the month promoting the Action for Happiness Calendar and the theme for October was Optimistic October – Action for Happiness. The theme resonated with many and with the way the world is at the moment it is a difficult task to feel Optimistic isn’t it? But we need to try and the calendar certainly had some good prompts to get started.

So what else did I get up to?

Daily walks with a purpose

My walks focused on walking 84km during the month to raise funds for the Heart Foundation. Thank you to all who have donated.

There was lots of birdlife on my walks and immersing yourself in nature is always such a good way to soothe the soul. I found delight in watching the ducks waddling along, the gracefulness of the swans and the ducks diving and swimming.

In the Kitchen

In the Kitchen during October I made a quick return to our Home Restaurant Date Nights. Life has been so hectic and my efforts at our Date Nights at home have fallen off track. However, I did make an Italian themed meal which I will be linking up to What’s On Your Plate? in early November. I’ll share the recipes then. On the menu was Bruschetta with Olive and Danish Feta for the Entree and for Main I made a Vegan Eggplant Stack using Cannelli Beans instead of the traditional white sauce. It was delicious and healthy!

Fashion & Beauty

One of the many highlights for me in October was stepping out of my comfort zone to model some lingerie kindly gifted to me by JulieMay Lingerie. Now this 66 year old body, is showing signs of age, and although I felt very self-conscious ‘modelling’ these gorgeous bras and briefs sets, I also felt empowered. Body Image is something I’ve always struggled with but now in my 60s I’m comfortable with who I am and grateful my body is healthy and strong so I can enjoy my life to the full. You can read the full blog post which I’ve listed in my Posts for the Month section below.

Blogging & Posts for the Month

October was bittersweet in the blogging world as we farewelled Denyse Whelan who retired from more than 11 years of blogging. Each Wednesday, Denyse hosted Wednesday’s Words & Pics and had developed a great community of bloggers linking up. I wrote a tribute to this inspirational lady and you can see the link below in my posts for the month.

As we farewelled Denyse and the group was feeling a little adrift, Min from Write of the Middle stepped up to the plate and has introduced a new Wednesday link up – Wednesday Words & Whimsy. You can read all about it in the Posts for the Month below.

During October my fingers flew across the keyboards and I wrote quite a number of posts on a range of topics. Here are my posts from October in case you missed them.

Hi, Sue – You have had a fabulous October filled with so many good things and new adventures. Enjoy your trip to Sydney and your big trip away that is also coming up shortly. Send us lots of photos! <3

October was wonderful, Donna and I’m so grateful to be living the life that I have. I love to lead a busy and fulfilled life appreciating every moment. Sydney was wonderful x

Wonderful month Sue, you have an awesome body and you certainly did that lingerie justice. You’re such a positive person and write such uplifting posts 🥰

    • Reply Sue Loncaric October 30, 2023 at 09:07

Thanks for the compliment, Alison – it was very much out of my comfort zone but the lingerie is beautiful to wear. I try to maintain a positive attitude most of the time because really I don’t have too much to complain about. I’m very lucky and grateful. Have a lovely day. x

        Same here Sue 😊

I am so jealous of your European trip! I’ve been trying to talk my husband into a Viking River cruise for years. I hope you’ll write a blog post about it. I think you looked stunning in your lingerie! You have worked hard for that body. I also like your 84 km in a month idea. I think I’m going to try for something like that even though the weather is about to turn here in Central Indiana in the Northern Hemisphere.

I’ll be linking up on my Friday (perhaps your Saturday?) once my post goes live!

I’m really excited about our trip, Marsha and just had a whirlwind trip to Sydney to visit family who I haven’t seen for 8 years. This will be our first River Cruise but everyone assures us we will love it. Watch this space! x

Have a wonderful trip!I look forward to seeing some of those pics. Amsterdam is so gorgeous. I loved it so much and regretted only 3 days there. You’ve packed a lot in this month, and a lot of good causes. Well done!
    Bon Voyage!

Thanks, Lydia. We’ve not visited Amsterdam before so really looking forward to discovering this popular city. There will be lots of photos! xx

Hi Sue – you were certainly prolific on the blog during October – and you look lovely in all your underwear and clothes. The hat is great too. I have one like it in winter white and love it. I’ve owned it for many years and wear it daily in Summer – a quick wash every now and then and it’s good to go. I’m keeping your link in mind if I want to upgrade to a different colour down the track.
You’re going to love your river cruise and it’s the perfect time of the year to be floating through Europe.

    • Reply Sue Loncaric October 30, 2023 at 09:10

Thanks, Leanne, October was really a wonderful month and I’m so grateful to have such a fulfilled life. Of course, it isn’t always perfect – but what is in life? We are looking forward to our River Cruise and friends have assured us that we will enjoy it. I’m grateful to be able to have the experience. Have a lovely November. x

Hi Deb, October was a great month – but then most months are good in some ways even if there are not so good times as well. So excited for the trip which is now under two weeks. I’ll be getting the suitcase out this week and packing 100 times before I go LOL 🙂 x

  • Reply Jo October 28, 2023 at 08:56

First up, loving all the jacarandas in bloom – Sarah used to call them fairy flowers and I still think of that when I see them. I can’t wait to hear about your river cruise when you return and go you re the modelling – you look great. I love how you live the concept of stepping out of your comfort zone.

    • Reply Sue Loncaric October 30, 2023 at 09:17

Aren’t the jacarandas gorgeous? They just make me feel happy. Sarah was right they are fairy flowers – I will think that now every time I see them. A bit like Ethan calling Lorrikeets, Lollikeets when he was little. The lingerie was definitely out of my comfort zone but I was happy with the photos and it felt quite empowering really. x

For the first time, I am not linking up but of course, I did have to come over and see what you and my other friends are up to for WBOYC. What a busy and fulfilling month you have had. Out of the comfort zone and into so much more. Go well, and I hope you continue to share the good news of those causes you are passionate about. I wish you and M well for the vacation ahead…and again, (I went back to comment today because I CAN!) thanks for including me and my retirement in your month of October. Denyse x

    • Reply Sue Loncaric October 30, 2023 at 09:19

October was a lovely month, Denyse. I also had my trip to Sydney which was after I had posted but that was wonderful catching up with family I hadn’t seen for 8 years. Thanks for taking the time to comment and for your friendship. Have a wonderful November and enjoy x

Hi Sue, I love your enthusiasm and appreciate all you do to stay healthy and happy. Your trip sounds like quite an adventure. Probably too early for Christmas markets, but you never know. I love all your fashion photographs. Kudos to both the model and photographer. If I looked like that in my undies, I’d be showing them off too!! Good for you. Maybe swimsuit model is in your future? I have spent most of October regrouping and getting back to basics after a stressful summer. I’ll be linking up tomorrow to share more about that. Take care.

    • Reply Sue Loncaric October 30, 2023 at 09:21

HI Suzanne, I have found two Christmas markets which open just a day before we arrive – one in Basel which is from 23rd November and we arrivethere on 24th and another in Bologna which I may visit when we are in Milan. Life is good and I’m very grateful as always for my health and ability to live a fulfilled life. Not sure about the swimsuit model LOL 🙂 but I suppose we should say ‘never say never’. Sending love and good wishes for you, your husband and MIL at this time. Take care xx

Sue, you are brave to model underwear at any age. My body image fares much better in clothes! LOL Our parents would have been almost the same age had they lived. My dad’s 97th birthday was October 12. Mom’s was May 12. My mom’s first cousin passed this June following his 98th birthday. I hope you have a wonderful November, but it sounds like October is going to be hard to beat. 🙂

HI Marsha, yes modelling the lingerie was a little out of my comfort zone but it is beautiful to wear. November will bring our first River Cruise which I’m greatly looking forward to. Thanks for your comment and wishing you a wonderful November. I look forward to reading about it next month. x

        • Reply Sue Loncaric October 31, 2023 at 06:32

Hello Marsha, the cruise is a River Cruise starting in Amsterdam, travelling through The Netherlands, Germany and France and finishing in Basel, Switzerland. I have a post coming out next week with our itinerary. xx

          • Marsha November 1, 2023 at 07:45

How exciting, Sue. That’s quite a lengthy cruise. Do you have room in your suitcase for a couple of extra travelers?

          • Sue Loncaric November 1, 2023 at 09:31

Hi Marsha, the cruise is only 7 days. We are staying in Amsterdam for 5 nights before the cruise and then Milan for 6 nights after. Yes I will have room for you LOL 🙂 x

Jacaranda trees are so pretty–messy, but pretty. They grow in Southern California where I used to live.

Well done with the lingerie modeling! I love how you’ve accepted and embraced your body. May we all do the same.

It’s so encouraging to see you comfortable with your body. I’m about to turn 61, and I’ve really struggled with my “older” body, so you give me hope that maybe one day I will finally accept this body I have! 🙂

    • Reply Sue Loncaric November 9, 2023 at 08:17

Thank you Lisa, it has taken many years to get to this point and how I view my body. All we can do is maintain a healthy lifestyle and enjoy life because I do think that if we are happy it shines through from within. xx
