A few weeks ago I wrote about When Life Feels “Okay,” but Something Isn’t Right. I shared how I was feeling and although I was reluctant to publish the post, with encouragement from a dear friend, I did – and I’m so glad I did!
The responses were amazing, supportive and also helped me to realise I am definitely not alone in feeling this way. Many of us are doing it tough and can’t put our finger on what’s wrong. It doesn’t help that there is so much upheaval in the world at the moment and people are suffering.
After taking time away in North Queensland I’m still not fully settled but am on the way. I closed the WLA50 Facebook Group and now just have a FB page and Instagram as my socials.
I have decided to keep my Living Well This Week Letter on Substack in the form of a free newsletter which people can subscribe to. The aim is to provide a weekly/fortnightly or even monthly (to be decided) newsletter that is dedicated to women over 50 who are committed to living well and enjoying life. Here, you’ll find inspiration and practical tips to enhance your health, wellness, beauty, and overall lifestyle. That’s the plan but I’m still mulling over how I will proceed with this idea.
The blog will remain the same with my usual link ups and I realise I have a good balance of link ups which include books I’m reading, fashion, health and wellness and what I’ve been up to.
This week I decided to blow away the cobwebs and focus on Sparks of Joy for the Wednesday Words & Whimsy link up. This helps to put the focus on finding those little glimmers or sparks of joy that we sometimes just brush aside without really appreciating their worth. I hope you will join me in sharing your sparks of joy too. I’ve gained inspiration from other bloggers who do similar posts and it is a great reminder that life does have sparks of joy even if they are small at times.
Sparks of Joy: Moments That Brightened My Week
Australia Shines at the Olympics
Watching our Aussie athletes give their all at the Olympic Games has been nothing short of inspiring. Their hard work, dedication, and incredible performances filled me with pride. Our medal tally is a testament to the strength and spirit of our nation. Although our population is small compared to other nations, we certainly made up for it in our performances. So many feel good back stories with many of the athletes and as always sport brings people together.
Did you have a favourite Olympic moment?
Spring is on the way…..
Spring is almost here bringing colorful blooms and strange creatures.
I was enjoying a lunch out on the patio on Sunday, and was surprised to see my orchid, which has been quietly growing but dormant for two years, is now about to bloom. The anticipation of those delicate flowers opening up is a reminder of nature’s beauty and the simple joys of nurturing life. I find myself checking every day to see when the ‘magic’ happens and the flowers are in full bloom.
There is colour everywhere plus a strange creature on our outside wall, which I discovered was a Bagworm Moth – it came from nowhere and it certainly has a good camouflage.

Volunteering for Share the Dignity
This week, I had the opportunity to do some volunteering with Share the Dignity, a charity dedicated to ending period poverty. We are well under way with the August Dignity Drive and have support from all Woolworths stores as well as some businesses. Educating young women about this important issue was incredibly fulfilling. Knowing that we can make a difference in someone’s life brings a deep sense of purpose and joy. I’m looking forward to having future opportunities to present the Share the Dignity message.
I met a lovely woman, Danielle, who is on staff at San Sisto College and is co-ordinating the Share the Dignity August drive at the college. Danielle, explained that the girls are learning about period poverty in their Health & Wellbeing classes and are horrified that this exists. They are getting involved helping others by donating period products to our drive as well as learning gratitude, to give back and awareness of how others who are not as fortunate live.

It’s a small world….
I was chatting to a Team Lead in Share the Dignity and discovered that she teaches Highland Dancing on Brisbane’s northside. In another life, you may recall I had a dance studio teaching ballet, tap, jazz and highland dancing in Sydney. We realised that we were probably dancing around the same time way back when and she would have come to Sydney for the Australasian Championships. It certainly is a small world isn’t it?
Staying Active with the 30 minutes daily Exercise Facebook Group
Staying active has never been more motivating thanks to the 30-day exercise group I started on Facebook. The camaraderie, encouragement, and shared goals keep me on track, and it’s a daily reminder that staying fit can be both enjoyable and rewarding. I also feel that I’m making a space that provides information, motivation and encourages others in the group to share their healthy living or to ask for support when they just aren’t feeling it.

Delicious Food
Food can bring joy whether it is preparing for loved ones or enjoying a meal with family or friends. Over the last week, I enjoyed making healthy fruit salad with my grandson, lunch with my darling and a post run breakfast with my running buddy.

Engaging with Women Over 50 via the Podcast
The Podcast is now fully booked until mid-October and I continue to enjoy meeting women who share their story, inspiration or advice on living well after 50. My guest this week was Kathy Marris from 50 Shades of Age. I’ve know Kathy since I started blogging although we only keep in touch occasionally on social media. I was dismayed to discover that Kathy had been through the roller coaster ride of a marriage breakdown but heartened to see that she is coming through this difficult time stronger than ever.
Kathy shared her story as well as providing advice on Surviving a Midlife Marriage Breakdown.
Something to look forward to
Whilst it is important to live in the moment, I also realise my need to have something to look forward to with the excitement associated with travel. This week we booked a 4-night cruise from Brisbane to Sydney for February 17th, 2025. It will be an enjoyable break before our big trip to Norway and the UK September 2025.
These moments, big and small, have filled my week with joy. What sparks of joy have brightened your days?
Have a beautiful week! and remember…..
Sometimes the little things in life can bring the greatest joy.

I like that term, Sparks of Joy, because sometimes sparks are all I’ve got! The Share the Dignity program is such an important one. I need to check this out here where I live. I contribute to the Blessing Box at our church (it’s a small box for non-perishable goods anyone can access), but I’ve not seen anything about period products.
I’m leaving for the UK in a couple of days and am hoping I’ve got everything squared away with Mike’s care. He’s making such good progress so I guess that’s much more than just a spark of joy! Thanks for being a spark of joy, Sue!

I’m so happy for your Marsha and can’t wait to see your photos. I’m sure Mike will be fine and he would want you to go and enjoy every moment. Take care my friend and have a fabulous time. x
I’ve not been posting my walking pics over the past few days – although where H&J live (on the top of a ridiculously steep hill), I’m not really walking unless we go into town! It will be lovely for you to have a short break to look forward to in Feb.
I’ve seen the view in your photos from that hill and I would baulk at it a well! Yes, we booked a spur of the moment thing and as it is finishing in Sydney I should be able to spend some time with my cousin which will be wonderful. Safe travels home xx
Sparks of Joy says it all Sue. There have been some lovely moments for you lately. That cruise looks great. My partner has never done a cruise so we often talk about trying a short one so he can try it out. Looking forward to seeing your orchid when it flowers. I love watching buds in the garden and waiting for them to pop
Hi Jen we have booked a big holiday for next September so just wanted something short and sweet in between. I think for first time cruisers the short 3 or 4 day cruises are ideal as they give you an indication of what cruising is like but you aren’t stuck on a ship for too long if you aren’t enjoying it. To me it is like being in a hotel but going to the theatre each night which I really enjoy. One of the buds is half open and what joy it has brought me today. I’ll post a pic! x
All that food looks fabulous, Sue
It was delicious too! x
I loved the Olympics – all of it. The Adaptive Skateboarding – watching them try those jumps they can’t see with canes just blew my mind. And the guy on the crutches doing the breakdancing (well, all of them I guess, regardless of missing limbs, extraordinary)
I got to Fleurs de Villes this week, so that made me very happy. Just lovely.
Glad you’re rightening your keel.
Yes that 14 year old was amazing! So many positive things about the Olympics that bring people together. I saw your photos of Fleurs de Villes it looked wonderful.x
Sparks of joy – I love it! This is a great list although I still can’t get over the moth! It looks almost jurassic. Your plants are looking fabulous though, what green fingers you have!
The moth is really strange and has actually moved to a new spot! It’s a bit creepy really. x
Hi, Sue – That is wonderful that you and Mike have booked a trip for February. There were sparks of joy all over your post. Absolutely love it!
I can always find sparks of joy if I look for them, Donna even if at times they might be hiding. x
Hi Sue, I loved reading about your sparks of joy! I must’ve missed the post you refer to in your opening paragraph but I went and read it just now. Yes, I can relate. I feel like that often! I think we need to re-evaluate our lives now and then and make decisions on where we put our energy and what we keep in our lives and what needs to go etc. Your cruise sounds like great fun and that trip to Norway in Sept 2025 – wow that is so exciting! BTW it is no surprise to me that you’ve signed up as a volunteer with Share the Dignity because you’re a very kind and giving person. That is something I would like to do if I had more time available to me. So nice to hear about the San Sisto girls being involved. Thanks for linking up with #WWWhimsy Sue – enjoy the rest of the week and have a wonderful weekend! xo
Hi Min, I’ve been feeling up and down but decided that I needed to shake myself out of my funk and look at the good things happening in my life. In saying that, it is also important to recognise when you aren’t feeling good and accept the feelings rather than brushing them aside. x
I love noticing the little things that Nature shares with me…a flower in bloom that was not yesterday. How great that must have been meeting someone who understands your world of dance and owning a dance studio. I feel a bit that way catching up with my now retired principal colleagues. My recent months have shown me that I can only care for me IF I do it…and plan for it. I am pulling away from the ‘shoulds and musts’ and replacing them with ‘can and like’.
Take care
Denyse

Hi Denyse, I’ve certainly been enjoying your daily walks photos and usually with some blooms or nature in them. I need to plan to do things as well, Denyse, otherwise it is easy to fall into the ‘I just want to stay home, I can’t be bothered’. x
This was such a joyful post Sue and it’s so true we often miss the sparks of joy in our lives. I can feel your positivity jumping off the page and you seem to have a good grasp on where you’re going and what you’re doing – the way you want your blog and podcast to go. Well done on all your achievments and thanks for reminding us to look for the sparks of joy around us. #TeamWWWhimsy
Hi Deb, you inspired my post and I did feel much better focusing on the positives. Time will tell with my plans but at least I feel more comfortable with where I’m going with the blog and podcast. x
Sue,
Since my husband passed away, I try to look for Joy in every day and some times that moment of Joy comes when the day is over…and a new one will start tomorrow…Life is tough sometimes and sometimes we take on too much and need to cut back….Sounds like you are on the right track…Thanks so much for stopping by!!!
Hugs,
Deb

I’m sure it is hard to find joy once you lose your partner, Debbie but you are doing so well. Take care of yourself xx
Love finding inspiration in your ‘Sparks of Joy’ posts! Dancing to Tina Turner sounds like so much fun. Maybe I’ll try a walk-with-me workout video this week. Thanks for sharing! Top 5 Schools in Greater Noida | Top 10 Schools in Greater Noida
