Last Sunday, two weeks before my 68th birthday, I laced up my runners and ran my second half marathon for 2025 in the run2cure event — but the real highlight wasn’t crossing the finish line. It was hearing the cheers of my grandsons as I came up to the finish line. Shouts of ‘Go Nan!’ spurred me on. Their hugs and ‘You were great, Nan’ filled my heart with joy and pride. I’m proud that I’m leading by example and showing the boys that anything is possible if we stay active and healthy.
The boys weren’t just spectators, either. Both ran their own 3km races, full of determination and big smiles. Ethan came in 5th running the course in 14 minutes! Elliot who is 7 ran with his Dad and came in at 22 minutes. They did so well.
The Run2Cure raises funds and awareness for research into neuroblastoma, a rare childhood cancer. Held at the beautiful New Farm park by the Brisbane river, it was such a wonderful family day with events for everyone. Distances were 21.1km half marathon, 10km, 5km, 3km and 1km. Everyone got into the spirit and it didn’t matter if you ran or walked, we’re an elite runner or walking. The rain held off to make it even better.
Running has become a family affair, and seeing the next generation embrace the joy, challenge, and community of the sport fills my heart with pride.
Here’s to many more races — together!

Hi Sue, well done you and isn’t it fabulous that your grandsons have been inspired by you and their mother to be active and enjoy running too! Congratulations too for helping to raise funds for research into neuroblastoma! Thanks for sharing your sparks of joy with us at #WWWhimsy ! xo
Thanks Min, it was so lovely having the boys there and also seeing them run. They both did so well considering it was their first proper race. x
Congratulations, Sue! You are an inspiration to so many but especially your grandsons! How wonderful they ran, too!

Hi Marsha, it really was a lovely day and something we will all remember, I’m sure. x
Wonderful to read and view Sue. Congratulations to all of you. I know of that awful cancer, having lost a student to it, aged 8, in my years of teaching way back. Thanks for doing all you could to help raise awareness and funds.
Is there any nicer word than hearing your name that the grandkids call you!? I love hearing “Grandma” and for you “Nan”.
Very special
Denyse x
There is something special about being a Grandmother, Grandma, Nan whatever we are called. Nothing better. xx
This makes me smile so much Sue. You are awesome to still be running, but how great it is to see that your grandsons are following your example. They are very cute and looks so proud of their medals.
Hi Jen, I keep smiling when I think about it too! They did so well and yes, like their Nan, were very proud of their medals. x
Aw, that is wonderful! I love hearing how proud of you they were and you can see how proud of themselves they are with their medals.
Thank you, Joanne. The boys were very happy with their medals, as was Nan. It’s the firt time they have seen me in a run and their first time running as well so special memories made that day. x
I love this, Sue! What a wonderful thing to pass on to your grandchildren. My daughter recently sent me a message telling me what an inspiration for health and fitness I was for the family. That was one of the nicest things anyone has said to me!
Doesn’t it make you feel good to know you are inspiring others and especially your family. I’m so pleased your daughter told you, as often they don’t think they need to tell you as they think you would know that. It was a very special moment for me and one I will cherish. x
You really are an inspiration! Def a woman ‘living well after 50’ #WWWhimsy
