Life In Full Bloom

Sparks of Joy #32 – Day trip, A Tradition and Overcoming Fear to find Joy

May 14, 2025

Last week was hectic especially Friday, Saturday and Sunday but so many sparks of joy that I felt uplifted despite being tired.

Day trip to Mt Tamborine

Mike and I enjoyed a day trip with our Probus group to Mt Tamborine an area in the Gold Coast Hinterland which we love. When we lived on the Coast we would regularly visit. However, living now in Brisbane we haven’t visited for a couple of years. It was a full day but fun. Another reminder of the health benefits of social connection and getting out and about.

We visited the Historic River Mill for Morning Tea, a walk along Gallery Way and then lunch at St Bernard’s restaurant which was delicious and had beautiful views.

Overcoming Fear – Redefining Ageing Event

Saturday I was honoured to be one of six presenters at the Silver Sirens Redefining Ageing event in Brisbane and my experience forms the basis for this week’s topic in my Weekly Boost Newsletter – Overcoming Fear and Saying ‘Yes’.

What a fabulous morning spending time with inspirational women and also sharing my story based around the theme of ‘Never Too Old’. It certainly challenged me, presenting to a room of 100 women but I’m so glad that I said ‘yes’ and took up the challenge. If I hadn’t I wouldn’t have met such inspiring women.

Sure I was nervous and full of self-doubt but I did it and proved to myself, once again, that I can achieve anything I put my mind to – and so can YOU.

Our Mother’s Day Tradition

Most of you who read my blog, know that each year, my daughter, Rachel and I run in the Mother’s Day Classic event in Brisbane. We run in memory of my Mum who died from breast cancer at age 63 in 1985. It is a wonderful way to start Mother’s Day and take a moment to reflect. Next year we are hoping that Rachel’s sons, Ethan and Elliot will join us.

Fortunately, the showers didn’t deter participants, who were walking or running to raise money for Breast Cancer and Ovarian Cancer and to take a moment to think of their loved one.

I hope you found some sparks of joy in your week. I’d love you to share them with me.

Have a beautiful week!

Sue Loncaric

There are so many wonderful sparks of joy in this post, Sue. Congratulations again on overcoming your fears (once again) and delivering a very inspiring speech!

What a lovely time you’ve been having..albeit pretty active and out and about A LOT!! Your post about the Probus visit reminded me that when my parents rented a unit on the Gold Coast for 6 weeks each winter, that was a place they visited with friends.
I am so pleased the speech went well..and we have already chatted about it…
Big congratulations to you and your daughter honouring your mum on Mother’s Day.
    Take care,
    Denyse x

It certainly was a hectic few days, Denyse which I wouldn’t want every week. In saying that, I enjoyed every minute. x

Hi Sue, what wonderful sparks of joy! I adore Mount Tamborine and particularly love visiting the St Bernards Hotel. I always have to visit, and pat if I can, the beautiful dogs there! Well done to you speaking at the SIlver Sirens event. Facing your fear and doing it anyway! I’m sure you did an awesome job of it and you look fabulous in your red jacket! Congratulations also for another successful Mother’s Day Classic run. Your mother would be so proud of you. Thanks for linking up and supporting #WWWhimsy xo

I was thinking of you Min at Tamborine as I know you love it up there. The Silver Sirens event was a wonderful experience and I’m glad I said ‘Yes’ instead of shying away. Have a lovely week. x

You are one of my inspirations, Sue! I often think, “If Sue can do it, you can, too.” Right now, we’re getting ready for Mike’s second hip replacement. Once he’s recovered enough, I want to take a road trip by myself…just to prove I can do it. I know he doesn’t have any desire to travel anymore, but I definitely do. So, if I have to go alone, I need to know I can do it! Thanks again for being you!

You are very kind, Marsha and your words make me happy. If I can inspire someone to go after something they want in life, then that fills me with joy. Good for you travelling solo. I know you would prefer Mike to be with you but you can do it, I know! x

This post definitely sparks joy Sue. I think it’s great that your still doing the Mother’s Day run with your daughter. Your trip to Mt. Tambourine sounds great. It sounds to me like your decision to join Probus was a good one. I was a Rotarian before I moved here, and always planned to join Probus. I often think of it. Well done on being brave enough to say ‘yes’ to the speakers event. It’s amazing how we are usually stronger than we think. I’m sure your speech was great and inspiring.

Hi Jen, I will do the Mother’s Day Run or Walk as long as I can. Next year, Rachel and I plan to do the run and then have Ethan and Elliot join us for the walk. Probus is great and we are enjoying the experience. The Silver Sirens event was challenging but also rewarding. xx

Mt Tambourine looks like a beautiful place to visit and how lovely to have a wonderful group of people for ou and your husband to share it with! Congrats on your speaking engagement – how fabulous that you were able to inspire others while being inspired yourself! And, congrats on your run. What a lovely tradition to share with your daughter and to do in honor of your mom! So many sparks of joy to celebrate!

We used to visit Mt Tamborine often, Laura but not for the last couple of years. It was lovely to revisit. I enjoyed the challenge of the Silver Sirens Event and met some very inspirational women. xx

That Silver Sirens event looks wonderful. I’m glad you overcame your fear to attend it. The day out with your husband looked lovely as well. It is so nice to be able to get out and do things like that as often as we can.

I’m so pleased for you Sue, what an inspiring post! I knew you’d be fabulous at the Silver Sirens event and you did it, looking fabulous too I’ll add. Your involvement in Probus is great to see and a day out in the hinterland would have been lovely for you both. I’m so impressed that you and Rachel continue the Mother’s day run and won’t it be great if the boys can join in next year? A great post!

It was a great experience, Deb and one I would do again, even if I was nervous. You helped with the wardrobe department! I’m looking forward to the boys joining us next year for the MDC and making it a family event. x
