April and May are both birthday months in our family. We recently celebrated my daughter’s birthday and on Sunday we had a birthday celebration for my grandson, Ethan who turns 11 on 28th.

Creating a Soccer Ball Cake
Each year I make a themed birthday cake for my grandsons and this year, Ethan requested a Soccer Ball Cake. ”Sure, I said” as I usually do and then realise it may not be as easy as it looks. However, with the aid of a Youtube video and some creative assistance from my sous baking chef, Mike, the cake turned out really well and although not perfect, I was very happy with the result.
I’m not a professional cake decorator by any means, but I give it a try and as long as the recipient is happy, then I’m happy. It brings me great joy to make the cakes and then feel the excitement and anticipation of how it will be received.
Originally, I purchased a special cake tin from Temu but when I realised Ethan wasn’t having a big birthday party, I knew it would be way too big and so went to Plan ‘B’ using an oven proof bowl which worked just as well. Mike used his mathematical skills to work out how to shape into a ball and away we went.
I purchased a downloadable Christiano Ronaldo Soccer themed cake topper from Etsy which I downloaded and had it printed and laminated. We then cut it out and attached it to the cake to finish it off.
I made a basic vanilla cake and joined the two halves together with some strawberry jam. The icing is rich enough without extra i the middle.

I had some left over cake mix left so made 6 cup cakes and decorated the tops to look like a soccer for Ethan and his friends to enjoy.
We had a lovely morning tea on Sunday and Ethan was very impressed with Nan’s (& Grandad Mike’s) cake decorating skills. Now to prepare for Elliot’s birthday at the end of May. He has requested a Minecraft Cake!

Hi Jen, the soccer cupcakes were a last minute idea. I had baked the cupcakes and then the creative thought came – Why not make little soccer balls! The kids loved them x
