How to rebuild Self-Confidence & Overcome Limiting beliefs after 50

July 10, 2020

Are you lacking self-confidence and self-esteem? Do you feel invisible?  Lacking purpose or direction?

You aren’t alone as many Women over 50 come to terms with the many changes that occur during this time of life.

Some women find it difficult to accept the aging process or are feeling lost because they are empty nesters, are struggling with menopause as well as physical changes to their bodies.

They feel invisible searching for purpose in their life, as they transition from a full-time career to retirement.

Welcome to Episode 4 of Conversations with Women Living Well After 50.  Today’s topic is all about overcoming your limiting beliefs and reclaiming your self confidence after 50.

I recently read an article in Harvard Health, ‘Regain your Confidence’. According to a 2010 study in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, a person’s level of confidence and self-esteem typically follows a bell curve. It gradually rises during the late teen years, peaks during middle age, and tends to decline after age 60.

This is an issue that women Over 50 consistently discuss with me. But I ask the question:

Why do we feel this way and how do we reclaim the self-confidence we once had?

In Episode 4 of Conversations with Women Living Well After 50, I’m delighted to welcome my guest, Candi Randolph from Inspire My Style to discuss the triggers that eat away at our self-confidence when we hit midlife and beyond . We also discuss strategies to overcome this.

Candi is a woman in midlife who writes about the experiences that women have as they go through this unique phase of their life, with topics like natural aging, healthy eating, fitness, casual fashion, home, and family. Her focus and passion is to offer motivation, inspiration, and encouragement to women in their 50’s, 60’s and beyond.

I’ve summarised the main points of the interview below and also included the link to the full YouTube interview below.

We discuss:

  • strategies to rebuild your self-esteem and take on the life you want.
  • triggers that eat away at your self-confidence
  • overcoming limiting beliefs
  • removing the cloak of invisibility and saying I am Me!
  • coping with body image and changes to our body during Midlife and beyond

Hi Sue and Candi, I really enjoyed this interview. It’s so important to make ourselves a priority, and make an effort with our appearance, diet and exercise. We’ve all been in a sort of Covid hibernation, and as we come out of that it’s an ideal time to make a fresh start. Toni x

Hi Toni, thanks so much for tuning in, and you are absolutely right…we have the perfect opportunity to set our self-care priorities as we come out of sheltering at home.

  • Reply Donna Connolly July 10, 2020 at 12:18

Toni articulated my thoughts exactly. Thanks, Sue and Toni, for a very inspiring interview. Now is an ideal time to make a fresh start!

Sue, I am impressed with all you are doing to inspire senior women in our life journeys. Especially in this time of global crisis, what we have learned from our life experiences can bring help and hope to those younger than us. This is not a time for us to step back, but to step up and I applaud you for doing so.

Thank you so much Aletha for your positive comment and words of support. I greatly appreciate you taking the time to visit. Enjoy your week. x

Hi Sue and Candi – lovely listening to Candi and seeing her in motion during the video. I’m really enjoying getting to know your guests more deeply Sue and listening to their wise words is great too.

    • Reply Candi Randolph July 14, 2020 at 02:45

Hi Leanne, thank you so much for tuning in! It does give a different perspective when you can actually see someone talking vs. pictures. Sue is doing a wonderful job with these videos!

Thanks Sue and Candi, a very inspiring talk. I know how it feels to feel invisible and it frustrates me very much. We were taught to be patient and wait our turn growing up but pushy people take advantage of that. I can’t change what happens, I can only change how I respond to it but some days I get so upset it affects me for the rest of the day. I’m so pleased to hear some advice on how to deal with it. Thank you

    • Reply Candi Randolph July 15, 2020 at 20:33

Hi Christina, I’m glad you found some inspiration from this talk on the topic, and you are so right when you say that only you can change how you respond to it. We have the power within us to overcome that self doubt. Thanks so much for sharing.

Will listen this morning….I have to say I’m quite a fan of my cloak of invisibility sometimes – mainly at concerts and festivals where I can push my way up the front and dance in peace…because when they see me, they like to open with ‘OMG! You’re so old!’ (seriously said to me at many festivals…however, I’ve learnt to not let that phase me either). So I quite enjoy the feeling that I’m there but not there…however, I’m guessing you mean more on the making an impact in your own life way…#MLSTL

You are doing a great job Sue and your guests all have something to offer us. I enjoyed hearing and seeing Candi in person! Another great episode! #mlstl

    • Reply Candi Randolph July 15, 2020 at 20:35

Hi Debbie, it is a different perspective to see someone talking rather than to read words on a paper, isn’t it? I am enjoying this as a viewer of other videos in the series!

    • Reply Sue Loncaric July 16, 2020 at 08:46

Thank you Deb for the positive feedback which is greatly appreciated. I’m putting myself out there and it isn’t easy to do especially if self-doubt creeps in! Candi was so lovely and I really enjoyed our conversation. xx

Hi Jennifer, I hope you can catch the interview because Candi raised some very valid points. x

  • Reply Denyse Whelan July 15, 2020 at 16:50

I take a bit of a different approach as I quite like some of my invisibility and use it to my advantage..people watching and being happy to be solo when I go out for a coffee. I admit I have not watched the video yet. However, I see, as always Sue, you are nailing it with your guests and direction for your visions for women as they get older AND wiser!

    • Reply Sue Loncaric July 16, 2020 at 08:41

Hi Denyse yes there are times when being invisible is good especially if you are interested in observing However, the invisibility I refer to in the conversation with Candi is when we are treated as if we don’t exist because of ageism or because we are less confident than others. I love being on my own although it doesn’t happen that often 🙂

  • Reply Erica/Erika July 16, 2020 at 12:07

I agree with you, Sue. “A hot topic with women.” I am nodding along with Candi about all of the “changes.” “The mirror” is often a reality check/shock. Who is that lady in the mirror? I spoke about removing the scale from our house about two years ago. This week, I told my husband we should also remove all of the mirrors. 🙂

I agree with many of the comments about self-care, prioritizing and making a fresh start. Candi and Sue, thank you for the inspiration. xx #MLSTL

    • Reply Candi Randolph July 16, 2020 at 19:59

Hi Erica, I still have the scale but don’t use it too often, I go by how my clothes fit, so I know what you mean! Accepting our bodies and adjusting to the ‘new’ look we have as we age is critical to enjoying each day. Thanks so much for tuning in!
