You know that drawer that everything gets thrown into? We all have one of those, I’m sure.  We get too busy to tidy up and the ‘junk drawer’ becomes overloaded to the point where you say ‘enough is enough’ and you FINALLY decide to tidy up and get rid of the clutter!  You may even have an ‘Oh I wondered where that got to’ moment.

Our lives can become so busy that our mind becomes the ‘junk drawer’.  It becomes so cluttered that we lose clarity, can’t focus and just become overwhelmed with life. This affects our ability to function.

Being overwhelmed with the inability to have clarity in our mind robs us of happiness in the moment and also affects our goals and dreams.  We are paralyzed to do anything because our Mind is full to capacity so we just keep treading water rather than moving forward.

It’s time to clear the clutter form our Mind, take a few deep breaths, enjoy life and also rediscover thoughts that had been pushed to the back of the ‘filing cabinet’ in the ‘To Do’ file.

Just as you examine everything in your ‘junk drawer’ to decide what to keep and what to dispose of, so too we can us this principle to declutter our Mind.

Try this Exercise

Take a sheet of paper and list ALL the things you are thinking of right at this moment – okay you might need more than one sheet of paper.

Leave the list and come back to it each day for the next week – adding your thoughts.

After a week examine the list and divide your thoughts into three categories:-

  • Keep
  • Put to side
  • Bin


These are your thoughts, dreams and concerns that need to be addressed.  Take each thought individually and if it is a problem take time to think of ways to solve it.

Put to the Side

These are your thoughts that you are not sure whether to keep or not.  Perhaps it might be an issue that you can’t face at the moment – but know that you will have to deal with it at some point.


These are the thoughts that have NO VALUE.  For example, worrying about something which is out of your control.

Once you have cleared the junk from your Mind use these 3 categories each week to keep your mind free, open and relaxed.  You will fell happier, less stressed and anxious, and enjoy your life more

    Great article Sue – an awesome way to deal with the clutter in our life. Love the thought about not worrying about things that are out of your control. I decluttered heaps of stuff when we moved our apartment, so am expert on that. But mental decluttering is something I need to work on!

    You know Sue, this was precisely the very same exercise I came up with just last week, when I was pretty overwhelmed by all the clutter and chaos inside my head. I was thoroughly confused as to what to do or not to do….writing it down gave me a clear sense of the priorities I needed to focus on and junk the lesser important and absolutely silly ones!     As awesome as always! I’m just amazed by the profound knowledge that you share. I’m curious if you have done a course on personality development or something. You seem to have it all.       Oh thank you Malavikka for your beautiful comments I am touched. No life is never perfect but if we try and implement strategies it can be a whole lot better. I’ve not done a course unless you count life experience as a course – then I’ve done many LOL:)

    It is so funny you mention this, the junk drawer anyway. I was just looking through mine the other day and realized there were things in there I do not need any more. But then I closed it and walked away. I think it’s time to clean it out. That and my mind ‘junk drawer’, there are so many things on my mind that I worry about, that are out of my control and some do not even affect me.
    Time to get cleaning.

    Love this, Sue. I just did a brain dump this morning (2 pages’ worth) because my mind has been racing the last two nights. I feel so much better and expect to sleep well tonight. I wasn’t keeping up with my weekly planning as I should have, but am back on target now that I did my brain dump first. I like the part about writing down the things you worry about and which you cannot change. I agree that there is something powerful and clearing about putting it on paper in helping you to let it go. Another fab post, Sue!

      Wow 2 pages Regina! I bet you felt a load lifted after that but it is a great way to get things out of the system. I think we put far too much pressure on ourselves and then feel so weighed down we can’t do anything. Great to hear you are back on track!
