Last Wednesday was the last blogging day for my friend and long time blogger Denyse Whelan. Each week, Denyse hosted Wednesday Words and Pics and I enjoyed the connection with the community of bloggers who regularly linked up their posts. I couldn’t let the day pass without writing my thoughts about this inspirational woman A tribute to my retiring blogging friend, Denyse Whelan
The general feeling from the ‘group’ was one of ‘What will we do on Wednesdays now?’ a feeling of being adrift without the weekly connection. Denyse and her link up had been the glue to keep us all together.
Connection, Creativitiy and Cheerleaders
The blogging world is something that many don’t understand unless they are bloggers themselves. I know that my family and friends don’t really ‘get’ why I blog and I know other bloggers have expressed this experience with those in their inner circle.
Only bloggers will really understand what a ‘Link Up’ (or as some call it a Link Party) is.
Only bloggers will really understand and appreciate the value of blogging and how it can enrich your life in so many ways:
- Blogging is a creative outlet
- Blogging brings people together as a community sharing their thoughts and developing conversations
- Blogging develops friendships which can be just as treasured as ‘in real life’ friendships. I’ve been so fortunate to have met several bloggers over the years and developed lasting friendships with them.
- Blogging provides a voice for our thoughts, ideas and feelings
- Blogging provides cheerleaders – those who blog and those who read the blogs. Our supporters who cheer us on and take the time to comment on our posts. The ones who are there to say ‘it’s okay’ if we write about our vulnerabilities or if we need to take a step back for a time. The ones who remain steadfastly in your corner and are there for your return.
Bloggers I’ve met IRL
I’ve been fortunate to meet up IRL with many bloggers:
Deb from Deb’s World (I’ve met Deb several times and it’s always wonderful to catch up)
Jo from And Anyways
Donna from Retirement Reflections (I met up with Donna when Mike and I were in Canada)
Min from Write of the Middle
Leanne from Cresting the Hill
Kathy from 50 Shades of Age
Deborah from Debbish
Jan from Budget Travel Talk
Jan from Retiring, Not Shy (who invited me to take part in a Fashion shoot)
Natalie from Natalie the Explorer (also during our Canadian trip)

There’s a New Link Up in the Blogging World – Wednesday Words & Whimsy
I was delighted to be part of a group message which I received from Min from Write of the Middle. Min has been in the blogging world for quite a number of years so she felt keenly the diminishing and changes in the blogging world as she has known it. There are bloggers who have gone on to develop a business through their blogs and websites and then there are bloggers who just want to have connection, creativity and cheerleaders in their lives.
Min decided she wanted to step up and fill the void of Wednesday mornings hosting a new link up and I’m happy that she did. Denyse has built a lovely community and Min has now taken the baton and is running with it to keep that community together. We now have new glue keeping us all together and connected – thank you, Min!
Why?
In Min’s words……..
WORDS … because as bloggers, we all love crafting our words and sharing them, or we wouldn’t blog!
&
WHIMSY … because I’ve always been drawn to this word and because it means cool stuff like:
Min – Write of the Middle
- playfully quaint or fanciful behaviour or humour
- unusual, funny, and pleasant ideas or qualities
- an odd or fanciful or capricious idea
The Benefits of a Link up to the Blogger and the Reader
Link ups are great for the participant and the reader. The participant builds connections and friendships and the reader has the opportunity of reading several blogs all in the one place. It’s a great way to discover new bloggers without having to look for them.
I’ll be linking up to Min’s Wednesday Words & Whimsy each week and sharing my Words and Whimsy.
A huge thank you to Min for offering and co-ordinating this link up and I encourage you as readers and/or bloggers to pop over to Min’s blog (and the others who link up) to support her weekly contribution to the blogging world.
The Wednesday Words & Whimsy Logo

Min, who is a talented artist (check her sketches out on her blog) has designed the new logo and you will find it in my sidebar with a link to the Wednesday Words & Whimsy posts.
I enjoyed writing this post as it brought me back to the reasons that I blog, and looking at the photos of bloggers I’ve met IRL has reminded me of the friendships I have made through blogging. This post probably fits into the Words category of Words & Whimsy but I will be investigating Whimsical posts in the future.
In the meantime, in keeping with the whimsy theme you might want to read a recent post I wrote When was the last time you were whimsical?

Hi, Sue – All that you have written here about the benefits of blogging are so very true.
Heartfelt congratulations and gratitude to Min for picking up the baton!
HI Donna, it was great that Min picked up the baton as it was a lovely group who linked up each week. x
Hi Sue, a great post about blogging and the value of linkups and lovely photos too. It seems you and I are on a similar wavelength today with our posts. Well done to Min for taking on this new linkup 🙂
Hi Deb, we were on the same wavelength with our posts, weren’t we? I’m glad Min has continued a link up – we would all have felt a bit lost on Wednesday morning without it. x
There are so many benefits of blogging for mental well being. I am so glad Min picked up the baton….#WWWHIMSY
I’m glad Min picked up the baton, Lydia as it really is a lovely group of bloggers. x
Connection, creativity and cheerleaders says it all. That truly is what blogging is all about. There is always room for another linkup and this one looks like fun!
I agree Suzanne, link ups are a great way for bloggers and readers to connect. I’ve let some go because of time but next year I hope to revisit ones I used to link up to and reconnect. x
Hi Sue, this is such a lovely post about the value and benefits of blogging! It’s hard for non bloggers to understand. I know it’s in my blood now that I’ve been blogging for over 11 years! I loved the memories those photographs brought back too! I certainly was feeling adrift and lost without our Wednesday linkup so I felt compelled to create a new one to fill that gap and I’m very happy to. Thank you so much for your encouragement and support and for linking up today. It’s a special day! xo #WWWhimsy
Thanks again for carrying on the link up, Min. I think you have great support from the bloggers and hopefully we will attract even more to the group. Well done! x
Hi Sue – it was lovely seeing all the photos of you with other bloggers (including me!) and I agree that it was wonderful of Min to step in and keep the Wednesday Aussie link party rolling along. I’m not linking up to parties atm, but I know they’re a great way to meet other bloggers and to keep in touch. I’m sure it’ll continue to be a success and I’ll be popping in each week to see what others are up to. x
HI Leanne, I was surprised at how many bloggers I had actually met in real life! I only link up to a couple of link ups as well as the two that I co-host with the Stunners gang. That’s enough for me but I still keep the connection. I’m glad Min picked up the baton and ran with it. x
Great post about blogging Sue. I’m very pleased there is a Wednesday linkup. I was concerned about losing touch with blogging friends
Thanks, Jen. It’s great Min has continued with the Wednesday link up as it really is a glue that keeps us all connected. x
Thanks for carrying on the Wednesday link party! You are so right about blogging friends too – I have been known to say ‘one of my blogging friends did xxx’ or whatever at regular intervals. It really opens up new worlds.
Hi Barbara, it is actually Min who is hosting but I’m so pleased she is carrying on the baton as the group of bloggers who link up each week are so lovely. x
How lovely to read this post of the baton being handed on…and yes I do get all of the reasons we have connected. Denyse x
Hi Denyse, yes carrying on the tradition you set, my friend. x
This is a great post Sue about the benefits and why’s of blogging. I know my family don’t really understand why I want to be a blogger but it’s for all the reasons you state. Well done to Min for continuing your Wednesday link ups. I shall definitely try to join in when I can.
Blogging is something only bloggers understand, Janine and that’s fine too. I’m so pleased Min has taken up the baton. Wednesday mornings would not have been the same. x
I’ve only been blogging for a little over two years, but I’ve grown to love the community of bloggers I’ve met virtually. I have only met one in real life. But, should you come to Central Indiana (though I’m not sure why you would), I’d love to meet you!
I am a fashion blogger, but I rarely write a post about just what I’m wearing. I have to figure out a “story” to tell to go along with it. I make very little money (pennies compared to what I spend), but that was never my aim. In fact, both my husband and I decided I didn’t want to monetize it because we didn’t want to deal with the tax ramifications.
Thanks for a good read, Sue!

I would love to meet you too, Marsha! I’ve been blogging for some time and my blog has evolved. It was orginally called ‘Sizzling Towards 60’ and then when I turned 60 I changed the name LOL :). I’m happy to have discovered your blog and also keen to see the link ups you utilise each week. I also like that you try to make a story out of your fashion rather than just posing and describing the outfit. That’s a great idea – I might borrow that! xx
No matter how ‘large or small’ your blog (and its audience)is there are so many benefits for the author. You’ve definitely set them out well
Strange as it may seem I’m a ‘private blogger’ as in my family are unaware of my online presence, as you mentioned ‘they wouldn’t understand’ so it’s best that way. I’m able to be as serious or flippant as I want and nobody will criticise me (well publicly)
It was a lovely surprise to see Min make Wednesday her own – now we must all support her in the same way we supported Denyse.
Oh Cathy, you are the sly one! Keeping your blogging ‘private’ without your family knowing. I’m so pleased Min has kept up the link up. I enjoyed meeting you and a couple of other bloggers I had met through Denyse’s weekly link up. x
Hi Sue, I took a break and just returned to blogging this week. I agreed with you about the value of blogging (connection, creativity and cheerleaders). It’s lovely to see the photos of you and bloggers you’ve met IRL, including me 🙂 Thank you for the mention. I hope we meet again in the future. It’s wonderful that Min picked up the baton to host the WW & Whimsy. Have a great week!
Hi Natalie, it’s good to take a blogging break occasionally, isn’t it? I hope you had a lovely time doing other things. I enjoyed our dinner when we met and who knows perhaps one day we will meet up again. Take care and have a great weekend. x
