Naked Wines Review – Supporting local Aus & NZ wine makers

November 8, 2024

The Festive Season is upon us and like many, I will be entertaining or attending celebrations with family and friends. It is such a lovely time of year as we usually catch up with friends or family we haven’t seen for some time.

It was timely then, that I received an offer from Naked Wines to try and review some exclusive wines made by Australia and New Zealand independent winemakers. We will be entertaining over the holidays and having a selection of wines for our guests to enjoy (in moderation, of course) as well as trying some new labels is appreciated.

Did you know?

Red wine, when enjoyed in moderation, offers several health benefits thanks to its rich antioxidants, particularly resveratrol. This compound, found in the skins of red grapes, has been linked to heart health by supporting healthy blood vessels and reducing “bad” LDL cholesterol. Moderate red wine consumption may also boost “good” HDL cholesterol levels, promoting a balanced cardiovascular profile. Additionally, red wine’s antioxidants may play a role in brain health by potentially reducing inflammation and oxidative stress, which can aid in maintaining cognitive function as we age.

Remember, moderation is key—typically one glass a day for women and up to two for men to reap the benefits without adverse effects.

Mike and I have recently started to enjoy the occasional glass of wine after 5 years of abstinence, so I was excited to try the wines I had selected through Naked Wines and provide a review.

About Naked Wines

I had heard of Naked Wines before but didn’t really know much about them. For the last 10 years, their purpose is to connect lovers of wine with the best independent Australian and New Zealand winemakers unlocking better wines at better prices. Currently supporting 60 independent winemakers directly, allows for vineyard to your door delivery at up to 30% off what you would pay in store.

Without the traditional retail middlemen costs and mark ups, winemakers can pass the savings on to you whilst still providing a quality product.

It’s a win/win really as we are supporting Aussie winemakers who have been doing it tough over the last few years with the Chinese tariffs which thankfully have recently been lifted, and the COVID pandemic, whilst having a choice of hundreds of award-winning wines at reasonable prices.

I like the idea of being able to support independent winemakers who are passionate about their craft.

Naked Wines also fund collaborations with worldwide independent winemakers such as Daryl Groom, the maker of Penfolds Grange.

Are you red or white or both? So many to choose from

Mike and I mainly enjoy red wines but I also enjoy the odd glass of bubbly or a chilled white on a hot summer’s afternoon. I liked that we could select what type of wines we prefer. We selected a mixed dozen which gave us the opportunity to taste different wines. It is up to you though, you can make your own selections based on your personal tastes and if you don’t like a wine you will receive a credit.

Our selection

We selected some Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Prosseco, Rosė and Sparkling Rosė to try. Our first taste was the Hearts & Bones Angeli 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon from award-winning winemaker Stuart Pym who has been crafting wine for over 30 years in the Margaret River region in W.A. I’m not a wine connisseur but it tasted delicious and with a generosity of fruit this wine can be enjoyed now but will also age beautifully.

How it works and what you need to know

Here’s how Angel Membership works. You pay into your wine account every month to save toward your future orders. So when you see something you like, order the wines and Naked Wines will deliver straight to your door.

  • After you redeem the welcome offer, you will be enrolled in the Angel membership. Angels pay monthly installments of $40 into their accounts to spend on wine whenever they like. Angels save $40 a month into their Naked piggy banks, to spend on whatever you want, whenever you want.
  • Get 12 delicious wines handmade by independent AUS + NZ winemakers for only $7.50 a bottle and free delivery
  • Explore hundreds of exclusive wines made by Australia & New Zealand’s best independent winemaker while saving up to 30% off market price.
  • No-fuss refund, we’ll credit your account for any bottle you don’t love .

If you enjoy wine and regularly spend at least $40/month buying wine, then the Angel Membership is certainly of value as outlined in the benefits above. Customer reviews have generally been positive, although the monthly membership fee is not something everyone wants. You can still purchase wine without taking out the membership and support the local winemakers.

Hi, Sue – I also love the idea of supporting local, independent business people who are passionate about their craft and products. And having lovely bottles of wine around the house, especially this time of year, is especially handy (and festive). Great post!

The membership program sounds like a good one. Would you believe I just don’t like wine? I always expect it to taste like cranberry juice (which I love). I suppose it’s just as well though it does make me look rather unsophisticated (hahaha)! Thanks for the review, though!

Hi Marsha, we have only just started drinking wine again after 5.5. years of being alcohol free. I like that these days we choose what we want to do and if you don’t drink wine it’s no big deal. x
