#WOTY2024 Over 50s Lifestyle

My #WOTY 2024 is Freedom

January 2, 2024

Now you know what my #WOTY is from the title so no building up the suspense!

Like many, I have chosen a #WOTY for several years and I’ve always found they have helped guide my year. In most cases the word has been exactly what I needed at the time.

In the early days I would spend so much time ‘finding’ my WOTY but the last couple of years the word has presented itself to me out of the blue and I’ve just gone with my gut feeling. It has proven successful so I continued with that selection process.

A couple of months ago I was driving along and suddenly the word ‘Freedom’ came to me. The more I thought about it, the more I knew that it would be my perfect WOTY for 2024.

My #WOTY 2024 is Freedom – Why ‘Freedom’?

I decided to see what AI suggested about Freedom and I think it is pretty spot on:

Freedom can hold various meanings depending on the context in which it is applied. In the context of choosing a Word of the Year (WOTY), “Freedom” could symbolize a desire for liberation, independence, or the ability to make choices without constraints. It might represent the pursuit of personal autonomy, the release from limiting beliefs or practices, or the opportunity to explore new paths without inhibitions. Overall, “Freedom” can encompass the aspiration to live authentically and pursue endeavors aligned with one’s values and aspirations, unrestricted by external or internal constraints.

Whilst many of us are fortunate to live in countries which afford us some form of Freedom, for which I am extremely grateful, my WOTY will be more about personal discovery and reflection.

Freedom will see me striving to improve areas in life

  • freedom to try new things by letting go of limiting beliefs and having faith in my ability
  • freedom by being accountable to myself and my needs first
  • setting boundaries to allow me the freedom to do things that bring me joy
  • travel – the freedom to be more spontaneous with our travel plans – especially local travel
  • freedom of my time to find balance with ‘doing’ and just ‘being’
  • freedom from mental stress, worry and anxiety and taking time to keep a healthy mindset

These are just some of the ideas I have but most importantly for me it will mean:

An added challenge!

I had scheduled my post and was scrolling through Facebook. I came across a post from Sally Thibault a friend of mine who has chosen the same WOTY ! She has taken it a step further and set some goals for each of the letters.

I might take up this idea for more clarity in living my word so watch this space. It will be a good project to work on I think.

Previous WOTY

Each year from 2016 I’ve chosen a WOTY and I’ve usually selected my word as early as November. My previous WOTY have included:

  • 2016 I wanted to find more BALANCE in my life.
  • 2017 I wanted to SIMPLIFY.
  • 2018 I wanted to THRIVE and in
  • 2019 I chose two words – COMMIT AND EVOLVE.
  • 2020 I chose a statement – MAKE IT HAPPEN
  • 2021 I chose to put the focus on SELF and where I was placing my energy ‘I needed to embrace my SELF and live my life with the focus of keeping what SERVES me WELL and LETTING GO of what is holding me back and making me feel trapped in life
  • 2022 I chose BE – Just BE – living life your way
  • 2023 I chose TIME – to use my Time wisely

So that is my Word of the Year for 2024. It has quite a large scope and I look forward to finding ways to incorporate Freedom into my daily life and sharing those experiences with you. Perhaps you may have some suggestions for me as well – I’d love to hear them.

Word of the Year works for some but not for others. If you have chosen a Word of the Year I would love you to share it with me.

The most important thing to remember is whether you select a WOTY or not, is to do what works for you and live life your way.

Happy New Year everyone!

A perfect WOTY! Some years my word or words come easily and others I have to think about it for a while. I agree, they help guide me through the year.

    • Reply Sue Loncaric January 2, 2024 at 08:34

Thanks, Darlene! Each year I think ‘I won’t have a WOTY next year’ and before the New Year starts usually one word keeps popping into my head to give me the message! Happy New Year to you and thanks for stopping by. xx

Sue, this is a very serious and powerful word and I look forward to watching it play out in your life. Freedom is the very essence of our being and when constrained in any way, alters our behavior. If anyone can throw away or break down those constraints it is you. Your commitment and dedication to health and fitness are evident that you have what it takes to be ‘free.’ Good luck and best wishes for a remarkable year of ‘freedom.’

Thank you so much for you lovely comment, Suzanne. I must admit I was second-guessing my choice after I hit publish but I do think it expresses where I want to be in 2024, especially in mindset. Happy New Year and I wish you happiness and health in 2024. x

Sue this is a wonderful word for you because I sense that you’re changing direction a little and all that the AI definition gave would be a perfect application for you. I hope you enjoy spreading your wings and giving yourself the freedom to do and be all that you feel called to in the year ahead. x

    • Reply Sue Loncaric January 2, 2024 at 13:12

Thanks, Leanne that is exactly where I’m at. I don’t want to tie myself down in any areas of my life. I’m still pondering whether to resume the podcast or not and there are IRL experiences I would like to explore as an individual and also with Mike in 2024. Lots to look forward to. x

Hi Denyse, I’m second-guessing myself as to my choice so time will tell. The freedom of mindset and mental being is an area I struggle with so that’s what I’ll be putting some focus on this year. x

  • Reply Janine January 9, 2024 at 07:43

I think this is a great word Sue. There are many facets of the word freedom that you can explore as you have suggested but the most important one is freedom to be you! I think we all allow ourselves to be conditioned by outside influences so that sometimes we can forget who we are and what we want from life. I look forward to seeing where your word takes you over the year.

    • Reply Sue Loncaric January 11, 2024 at 07:13

Hi Janine, it will be interesting to see how FREEDOM guides me. I was having second thoughts but I can always change it if I’m not feeling it, right? x

  • Reply patwdoyle11 January 9, 2024 at 10:30

Take 2 on my comment…. Hmm

I’m still circling around on a WOTY – yes, it’s the second week of January! I cannot seem to pick one that feels right. I do love your quote – FREEDOM TO BE MYSELF, LIVE AUTHENTICALLY AND WITHOUT EXPLANATION OR APOLOGY. Makes me want to pick Freedom as my own WOTY. I’m looking forward to seeing how this WOTY plays out for you – even when/if I don’t pick my own WOTY, I enjoy reading how others use their’s.

    • Reply Sue Loncaric January 11, 2024 at 07:14

Hi Pat, usually a word comes to me and I wouldn’t worry about not having a WOTY. I suppose we all think a New Year is a perfect time but we could choose a word or inspiration any day and any time. You can pick Freedom if you want to and we could see how it guides both of us. Have a great week. x

  • Reply Marsha January 10, 2024 at 11:20

Hi Sue, Freedom is a great word. I will look forward to seeing how it guides your year. My WOTY is INSPIRE. I have used it to base each post for WQ (Wednesday Quotes) 2024. I’m really excited about it. It came to me during a walk, and I wondered how I could possibly live up to a word like that, so we’ll see how it goes. 🙂 Have a great 2024.

    • Reply Sue Loncaric January 11, 2024 at 07:15

I love INSPIRE Marsha and I’m sure you are living that way now inspiring others with fashion and other topics you cover in your blog. Wishing you a wonderful 2024 as well. x

      • Reply Marsha January 11, 2024 at 09:37

Fashion? I rely on your blog and my friend Jodi for that. Sadly, I’m as fashionable as a wart hog. 🙂 And I need a new haircut and a cute hat. Lots of love, thanks for reading. I felt the freedom to tell you about my fashion failure to inspire, LOL. 🙂

        • Reply Sue Loncaric January 13, 2024 at 07:05

Hi Marsha, I’m not a fashionista and at the moment I would love a full makeover. We can help and inspire each other. I’m glad you feel we are friends enough for you to tell about your fashion failure to inspire. x

          • Marsha January 13, 2024 at 08:55

Well you inspired me to get my hair cut at least. It was getting super long and even thinner than long. So I cut off about two inches myself. Yesterday I had an appointment with someone close by. She was adorable. Now my hair doesn’t look that much shorter, but it’s fun and stylish. 🙂

          • Sue Loncaric January 13, 2024 at 13:25

Oh thanks Marsha. I love a trip to the salon and always feel great afterwards. x

Oh Enough is a perfect WOTY I think it was one of mine in a previous year, Julie. We sometimes forget that we are Enough and are doing the best we can. Have a beautiful week. x

I see that Balance , which is my Theme of the Year, was your Word a few years back…Pause is my Word of the year…I find I need to hit that Pause button quite often and hopefully, by the end of the year, maybe not so much!!
I hope you are having a great week!!

Hi Debbie, I love ‘Pause’ it can be any length of time but it can make all the difference. Last year I was ill so had to Pause my Podcast from August. People are still listening to previous episodes but I’m almost ready to press ‘Play’ again. Have a lovely weekend. x
