My Winter Bucket List

June 21, 2017

My Winter Bucket List

I’ve heard of the Bucket List where we make a list of all the things we want to do before we die.  However, my friend Leslie from Once Upon A Time & Happily Ever After, Life After Retirement suggested I take part in a seasonal bucket list.  That’s right a bucket list of things I would like to do for each season.

I’m starting with my Winter Bucket List because in Australia it is officially winter. I know I’ve used a lovely wintery scene for my feature image because I would love to experience snow, but where  I live in Brisbane, Australia, winters are pretty mild with gorgeous sunny days and blue skies.  I love the cool, crisp mornings, short days and cold evenings but certainly my Winter is still very much an ‘outdoors’ type of season.  A bit like this photo:

A sentence a day

My Winter Bucket List

I’ve decided to group my winter bucket list into categories – Health & Wellness, Social, Travel, Home and it surprised me to see that I have a very busy winter ahead of me if I achieve all on my bucket list!

Health & Wellness

  • Run the Gold Coast Half Marathon
  • Run the 34km  ‘Bloody Long Walk’ which raises funds and awareness for Mitochondrial Disease.
  • Stadium Stomp – running 5,000 stairs
  • Enjoy the Winter Sunshine in Queensland
  • Make June my health & wellness month to concentrate on exercise, eating well balanced meals, cutting down on alcohol and making more time to ‘just be’ and enjoy the moment.

  • Prepare for our trip to Spain and Italy which is in October
  • Discover my home city of Brisbane through walking and exploring
  • Spend more time at our other home on the Gold Coast for long weekends
  • Discovering Jane Austen again and re-reading her classics

  • Celebrate Christmas in July with all the trimmings.  This started over the last few years in Australia so we can enjoy the turkey and ham and all the trimmings of a Christmas feast which is too hot to eat in December when we are in Summer.
  • Celebrate my 60th birthday in August
  • See the Royal Ballet perform in Brisbane

  • Make Saturday night dinners special again and try out some new slow cooker recipes
  • Catch up on movies and TV series on rainy days
  • Gardening make a terrarium with my succulents
  • Start collating family history and photographs.  I recently had a ‘cousins’ reunion and am all inspired to check out my family history and put it into some sort of order.

What would you put on your Winter Bucket List?

Love your list…except the 5000 stairs thing…yeah, nah…;) I re-read a Jane Austen at least once a year – I take them turnabout. It’s lovely to rediscover that beautiful language. And yes, my graphic for this link-up looks as wintery as yours does!

    • Reply Sue Loncaric June 22, 2017 at 14:36

We are lucky to have mild winters aren’t we Jo although I wouldn’t mind experiencing snow. I do the Stadium Stomp every year and it isn’t as bad as it sounds. It sounds much more impressive saying 5,000 stairs LOL:)

I love how you put reading Jane Austin under “Travel”. Mind travel!

Someday I’m going to visit Oz. I’m making so many blogging friends that hail from your land!
    Here’s to a happy Winter/Summer!

    • Reply Sue Loncaric June 22, 2017 at 14:35

Hi Anne between you and me I didn’t realise I had put it there but I like your idea of Mind Travel LOL:) I’m sure you would love Australia and it is great to meet other bloggers from other countries. I’ve met many from around the world and they have become online friends. Happy times for you and hope you visit again. x

What a great list, Sue!! I love planning for a trip like you’re going to Spain & Italy. To us, that is half the fun!!

    • Reply Sue Loncaric June 22, 2017 at 14:34

Yes I can’t wait Jodie we haven’t been to Spain but it has been on our bucket list for a long time. Enjoy your Summer and have a beautiful day x

  • Reply Valerie Price June 21, 2017 at 23:41

Leslie is my sister, so I clicked over to read your bucket list. I lived in Brisbane for 15 months in 2005. What a gorgeous city. We were in Paddington one street over from the Mayor’s (I think) house. We loved to hike up to Mt. Coot-tha. I hope to visit again one day. Your list makes me tired reading it. Good luck on all those accomplishments!

    • Reply Sue Loncaric June 22, 2017 at 14:31

Oh hi Valerie!!! We could be cousins because I was a ‘Roberts’ before I married. Paddington is a lovely spot and we are at Kangaroo Point so not very far away. Mt Coot-tha is beautiful and I love running around the river through the city and Southbank. Have a beautiful day and I hope you visit again. x

  • Reply Natalie June 21, 2017 at 23:47

Looks like you’ll have a busy and fun winter, Sue. Your run distance is impressive. Spain and Italy are wonderful destinations.

    • Reply Sue Loncaric June 22, 2017 at 14:30

I think from reading the others in the link up Natalie we are all going to be busy!! At least some of what we have planned is fun and that is most important isn’t it – health and happy. Have a great week and thanks for stopping by. x

  • Reply Sheila DelCharco June 22, 2017 at 00:14

You sound like my kind of girl! Run half marathons. Visit Europe. Where are you going in Italy? I’m from Italy and have blogged about it some. I still need to make it to Spain. My husband’s family is from there! Nice list!!

    • Reply Sue Loncaric June 22, 2017 at 14:29

Hi Sheila! My husband was born just outside of Naples and came to Australia when he was 4 years old – 65 years ago!!! We visit his aunt and cousins there every couple of years and of course I just love the whole of Italy full stop! Could never get enough of it. Spain has been on our bucket list for years so this year we are going to be able to tick it off. Have a beautiful week and thanks for stopping by. I hope you visit again xx

      • Reply Sheila DelCharco June 23, 2017 at 01:02

No way! My mom, my brother and I were all born in Naples! The only family left there is my uncle and his family and my cousin. Other family moved to other areas of Italy but Naples is still our favorite! Best. Pizza. Ever. Does your hubby speak Italian?

        • Reply Sue Loncaric June 23, 2017 at 09:10

Oh what a coincidence! We love Naples and will be visiting the Isle of Capri this time as we have never been there. My husband still speaks Italian – I can understand it but I don’t sound that great when my Aussie accent comes through LOL:) Have a beautiful day and do visit again.x

Well today is officially the first day of summer so I will have to think about a winter bucket list….poolside!

    • Reply Sue Loncaric June 22, 2017 at 14:26

What a perfect location to contemplate winter, Antoinette! Enjoy and have a cocktail for me LOL:) x

  • Reply Leslie Clingan June 22, 2017 at 05:40

Darn laptop! I really wanted to break my bucket list activities into categories, too and elaborate a little bit about each one but just didn’t have the energy to fight with this laptop any longer than necessary.
You are such an inspiration with your bloody long walk and stair climbing. My sister read your post and was as equally impressed as I! Bravo, girl, bravo!
I am all about crockpot recipes. Maybe we could do a crockpot recipe link-up week? Even though it is summer here, I use my crockpot regularly. I really want to try to cook more once I get home, too.
Will be anxious to read about your birthday celebrations and Christmas in July. Will your blog name remain the same after this birthday?
Thank you so much for joining me for this bucket list link-up. Enjoying getting to know you.

    • Reply Sue Loncaric June 22, 2017 at 14:24

Hi Leslie! Yes technology can certainly be a pain in the proverbial. Thanks for prompting me to do this link up I’ve really enjoyed reading everyone’s ideas of their Summer or Winter dreams. Yes a crockpot link sounds doable. My daughter and husband a planning a small party for my 60th and the blog name I’ve just added ‘& Beyond’ at the moment because I don’t really know what to call it? Maybe I should have a competition to name my blog LOL:) Have a great day and I’ve met your sister who left a comment. xx

Impressive list Sue! You are going to be busy–just with the Health & Wellness portion alone. I’m jealous of the Spain and Italy vacation and am looking forward to lots of photos! Happy winter to you! Come visit us in Utah some time around December and January, and you’re almost sure to experience snow. There’s actually still a little left on the mountaintops right now.

    • Reply Sue Loncaric June 22, 2017 at 14:22

Hi Christie! Yes winter is usually busy for me with all of my fun runs. This is our first big holiday for a couple of years so I am eagerly waiting for October to arrive. I would love to visit Utah, number one and secondly snow would be beautiful to experience. A beautiful part of the country obviously. Thank you for stopping by and I hope you enjoy your Summer! You are welcome to visit again x

I love that you will be celebrating Christmas in July! And your wellness list sounds awesome. Running 5,000 steps will be a great accomplishment.

    • Reply Sue Loncaric June 23, 2017 at 09:12

Hi Penny thanks for visiting! Yes I haven’t celebrated Christmas in July before but this year I have it on the list. No gifts just a traditional Christmas meal with turkey and all the trimmings because it is too hot in December in Australia! For Christmas it is usually a seafood feast!

  • Reply Michael Ann June 22, 2017 at 12:29

Hi, Sue! I’m dropping by from the Summer List Linkup! Your winter list looks great, and just thinking of cooler days makes me happy! I really enjoy traveling, so I’m eager to read about your upcoming trips. Keep us posted on which books you read too! I just finished The Lost Book of the Grail and will soon start He Said She Said, both of which are from the Modern Mrs. Darcy Summer Reading Guide.

    • Reply Sue Loncaric June 22, 2017 at 14:18

Hi Michael Ann lovely to connect with you! It is my first List Linkup and I’ve loved reading what everyone is hoping to do. I love travelling as well and because of family issues haven’t been able to for a couple of years so very excited about October. I’m reading Jodie Picoult – handle with care at the moment and just finished three by Lisa Genova. I love her books. I’m off to check out Modern Mrs.Darcy Summer Reading Guide. Thanks for the tip. Have a beautiful day and hope you visit again. x

    Hi, Sue!

What a beautiful photo! My cousin lived in Australia for a couple of years and thought it was the most beautiful place on earth.

You have a great list to get you through winter. Lots of exciting things!
I love your attention to health and wellness I never thought of adding things like that… I usually think about chocolate 🙂

    • Reply Sue Loncaric June 23, 2017 at 09:05

Well I’m a little biased but Australia is beautiful so you should come visit! Oh I think about chocolate too Em, that is why I have to give attention to my health and wellness!!!

  • Reply Shirley Corder June 22, 2017 at 22:31

I’m impressed with your winter bucket list! Like you, we here in South Africa are moving into winter. Two days ago, you wouldn’t have believed it – but today if feels as if it’s about to snow. (It won’t, not where I live, but we would settle for some rain as we’re deep in one of the worst droughts in living history.) Interview with a Protagonist and his author.

    • Reply Sue Loncaric June 23, 2017 at 09:06

It certainly doesn’t snow in Queensland Shirley! We had a rather wet summer so the drought has passed us for a little while. Have a great week and I enjoyed your interview with Nicholas Gallagher.

  • Reply Jennifer June 22, 2017 at 22:32

Your home bucket list sounds similar to mine. Although my dinners will be Sunday, not Saturday.

    • Reply Sue Loncaric June 23, 2017 at 09:07

Oh Sunday night dinners are special too aren’t they Jennifer? Any night is a good night for fine food, wine and company.

  • Reply Debbie June 22, 2017 at 22:34

A great list Sue! I’m still trying to work out mine for winter.. your winter weather is much nicer than ours!

    • Reply Sue Loncaric June 23, 2017 at 09:08

Hi Deb, yes maybe you need to visit your daughter more in Winter? Although I actually love the cold weather and find it very bracing and refreshing. Have a great week.

  • Reply Carrie @ Curly Crafty Mom June 23, 2017 at 00:45

You have a lot of fun goals! I love the terrarium filled with succulents! I am training for a half marathon for this fall! I ran a full marathon last fall, but I am not sure if I’ll run another one. It was sort of a one time (BIG!!) goal for me! Running 5,000 stairs sounds exhausting! LOL! I went to Italy for the first time with my husband last summer and we want to go back soon!

    • Reply Sue Loncaric June 23, 2017 at 09:09

Hi Carrie good for you completing a marathon. I ran my one and only full marathon two weeks before my 55th birthday. I just don’t think I have it in me anymore – mentally. Running that distance becomes a battle of the mind. Good luck with your training. Yes Italy is beautiful, my husband was born there so we love to visit every few years. Have a lovely day and hope you visit again.

  • Reply Jan Wild June 23, 2017 at 17:42

Gosh Sue, you must be incredibly fit -5000 stairs indeed. You will be in great shape for Europe. I suspect we will just miss you in Spain, we will be in Barcelona very early in October.

    • Reply Sue Loncaric June 24, 2017 at 05:46

Hi Jan! I suppose I have to say I’m fit because I do run them, but so many just walk. It is a fun event called the Stadium Stomp and in Brisbane it is held at the Gabba Stadium. They have one in Melbourne at the MCG I think. We start our tour 5th October but won’t be in Barcelona until around 15th I think. What a shame. Never mind we can swap stories when we get back. Have a great weekend and thanks for stopping by. Take care xx

Great bucket list with some really exciting items! I love that you divided it into categories. I may have to borrow that idea for my next seasonal bucket list… 🙂

    • Reply Sue Loncaric June 26, 2017 at 13:43

I’m a bit of a list girl, Andrea and I like to compartmentalise the areas of my life. I find it easier to keep track of what I want to achieve. You can certainly use that idea in your next bucket list and I look forward to reading it. Have a beautiful day. x

I love Jane Austin! Rereading her works is also on my bucket list.

    • Reply Sue Loncaric June 27, 2017 at 19:52

Yes she is one I love to read regularly and also Maeve Binchy. I turn to Maeve when I’m feeling down and her books are just like a blanket that comfort me.

My ultimate would be to actually have a week or two at the snow (Thredbo or Perisher). Log fires, hot chocolate, toboganning, SNOW – even though I don’t ski it’s still loads of fun!

    • Reply Sue Loncaric June 27, 2017 at 19:51

Oh I love your bucket list Janet sounds perfect to me and I don’t ski either but we could both enjoy the log fires and hot chocolate!
