Midlife Motivation #2 – 5 Favourite Friendship Quotes

November 7, 2016
Friendship quote

Friends and friendship is such an important part of our life both emotionally, mentally and physically.  Nothing can compare to the relationships we share with our closest friends.  However, there are different types of friendship and also friendships which we may need the to courage to walk away from.

I’ve written before about Friendship and in particular a group of friends who I call my Saturday Sisters.  We run each Saturday and sometimes mid week and those times are precious.  We share the good, the bad and whatever we need to vent about without it leaving ‘the vault’.

I’d like to share my 5 Favourite Friendship Quotes with you which I think describe the different types of friendship.

Perhaps one or more resonate with you, and you might like to send to your friend to share or pin for later.

I love this quote because it is true.  I used to think that we needed to have friends forever, and we do have some friendships that last almost a lifetime. However, now I realise that not all friendships are meant to last.  Sometimes people come into our lives, we form a relationship and then the friendship ends for many reasons.  I’ve learned to move on and cherish the memory and friendship rather than wondering why we are no longer friends.  We are different women in midlife to who we were in our 20’s.  Perhaps friendships are the same.

Friends don’t always have the same opinion as you;  you will disagree at times.  You are individuals and differing opinions can make the friendship more interesting and richer. You learn from each other.  True friends accept the differences and the necessity to disagree at times WITHOUT it affecting the friendship.

Friendship quote

Are you a good friend?  Are you someone who always seems to be the one talking about themselves?  Sure friends are there to listen in the good and bad times but someone recently made me think about the kind of friend I am.  I’ve been going through a bad patch so lately it has been ‘all about me’.  My friends are fine with that but sometimes we need to take a step back and make sure that it isn’t just a one way street.  Don’t forget to ask how they are going?  Sometimes we can get so caught up in life that we forget to value our friends and appreciate them.  Show them you do.

Friendship Quote 2

I’m fortunate to have a couple of friends that fit into this category. 30 years ago I moved to another State and although life took over and I lost touch with many friends, there are two that I have remained friends with even though we live more than 1,000km apart.  Our friendship is not based on the need to talk frequently, but we know each other is there if we are in need and when we do chat the distance and time fades and we pick up from where we left each other.

Friendship quote

And sometimes you just have to walk away and let go.   Some friendships have a ‘used by date‘ the ones that you need the courage to walk away from.  The friends who want you in their life on their terms and delight in pulling you down.  We need to surround ourselves with those who believe in us and continue to support and encourage.

What are your favourite friendship quotes?  Do you have one? I’d love you to share it with me.

Let’s Keep Sizzling!

I really love the second one and appreciate the fact that my circle of friends are as different as day and night. I love them for what we have in common and appreciate them for our differences. Life would be so boring if we all thought, felt and acted the same way. It takes reciprocation though. If you are the only one really listening its time to move on.

    • Reply Sue Loncaric November 8, 2016 at 20:22

It makes the friendship more interesting if you don’t agree on EVERYTHING. You are right about reciprocation if the friendship is one sided then you need to walk away. Have a lovely day Doreen.

I love friendship quotes – one of my favourites is “you will recognise kindred spirits along your path. Cherish them.” and this is something that I’ve come to see in midlife – kindred spirits are few and far between, but so valuable – thanks for being one of mine xx

Oh thanks Leanne you are lovely and we are just so alike. We would have always been friends I believe.

I love quotes too Sue. Friendship is such an important part of our lives. I’ve really been relying on my friends for their love and support a lot lately. It’s great to know we can help each other out without question or expectation of anything. I think my fave is “Let go of those who bring you down and surround yourself with those who bring out the best in you”.

    • Reply Sue Loncaric November 11, 2016 at 17:28

Hi Lyndall, quotes are something that can really make you pause and think. It is great to have friends whom you know are there no matter what. I love your quote thanks for sharing.

Our girlie friends are very important in our lives. Although I had to walk away from two toxic friendships a few years ago when I started blogging, the old stalwarts stood by me. We are now tried and tested friends that also catch up most Saturday mornings for a walk, chat and coffee. We even have the occasional girlie holiday away together. My favourite friendship quote is:
“Friends are like underwear. Some crawl up your ass. Some snap under pressure. Some don’t have the strength to hold you up. Some get a little twisted. Some are your favourite. Some are cheap and just plain nasty. AND some actually do cover your ass when you need them to”!!!

    • Reply Sue Loncaric November 11, 2016 at 17:29

They sure are Kathy and I don’t know what I would do without my Saturday Sisters. It is hard sometimes to walk away but I think as we get older we realise what is and who are important to us and life is too short to be pulled down by those who don’t really care. Love you quote!!!

  • Reply Deborah November 10, 2016 at 17:05

Oh yes, I have a few one-way friendships, or unbalanced friendships I guess they are. But… I think I see them for what they are and recognise that – they may not be ideal – but I get something from them too. My closest friends are old friends and our friendships have lasted decades.

    • Reply Sue Loncaric November 11, 2016 at 17:30

Sometimes, Deborah, I think if we accept one-way friendships that is fine we don’t expect too much. It is only if we want the other person to be as invested in the friendship as we are that problems can arise. Thanks for the comment and have a great day!

Fantastic friendship quotes and all so true! I’ve realised that I have many acquaintances (friends) but only a few really good close friends. That is enough for me anyway. I really value all friendships, but particularly my close friends who know me so well and who I can relax and be myself with, knowing there will be no judgement! Love my girlfriends! 🙂 #TeamLovinLife

    • Reply Sue Loncaric November 11, 2016 at 17:31

I don’t think you need many friends Min it is certainly the quality of the friendships that matter. I love my Saturday Sisters and don’t know where I would be without them sometimes. Have a beautiful day and thanks for stopping by.
