I met Debbie Harris from Deb’s World through the blogging community and enjoyed her blog and blogging challenges she takes.  As you know I love a challenge so I knew we would click.  Debbie is an ‘aussie’ like me although she lives in another state, has recently retired and likes to keep healthy so three more ticks for a friendship to develop.

Recently, as part of my month of Health & Wellness, Debbie took part in my group post – ‘5 Women Over 50 share their health and wellness tips’.  I then asked Debbie to expand on that in a guest post for me.

Mental Health

I’ve written several posts about the importance of maintaining good mental health. Debbie provides further insight into what she does to achieve that, especially now she has retired.

Debbie writes:

When I was a young mother, I learnt to pick my battles.  As I grew older this lesson has stayed with me, although it’s sometimes hard as I’m a passionate caring person.

To remain fit and healthy as I age is so very important. Over the years I have had to work hard to maintain my weight, my fitness levels, motivation and my mental health. I find blogging helps my creative urges;  walking, running and cycling help my weight and fitness levels; and all of these help maintain my mental health.

I pick which battles I fight and I’ve learnt to set myself priorities.  I take time off if I need it and I try to be realistic.  I’ve become more accepting of my limitations and try not to push myself too hard.

Since fighting my forced redundancy last year and making myself sick in the process, I now try to avoid too much conflict as I know how it takes a toll on my body and head.  This isn’t always easy but I am trying to stay on a more even keel and so far I’m very happy and content with my new lifestyle.  Being retired at a reasonably early age (56) I have to learn to pace myself and schedule my time a bit better.

I stay in touch with similarly minded people – bloggers, runners, mentors – through social media (WordPress, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest) and enjoy the connections I have made.  I attend local events and stay socially active with friends via, bookclub, WEA group education courses, catch-up with friends and colleagues, cycling group and involvement in our Rotary club.

I enjoy running and try to attend Parkruns when I’m in area that has an event, I enter fun-runs regularly and train on my own with input from online friends and family. I find running on my own spoils me as when I am in a group run I feel overwhelmed and lose my head, often running out too fast and not being able to pace myself properly.

I enjoy looking at the world in a different way and try to express this in my photos and blogs. This includes the small day to day moments and looking at the funny side of things.  My husband and three daughters keep me grounded and never let me lose sight of myself.

    I love this expanded post, Debbie. I also love your focus on setting your priorities, especially in retirement when we no longer have the structure (or the excuse) of the workday…and everything seems to beckon. I agree that there is nothing like one’s spouse and children to keep one grounded!

    It’s so true. One reason I keep off the social media fight club. Honestly, it’s not good for mental health. Picking my battles.

      I know what you mean Carol! Sometimes I see comments and just don’t get why or how these people think. I’ve been having a technology and Social Media free day because frankly it can just take over. Have a great week and hope the business is starting to take off. xx

    You are so right about picking your battles Deb – I call it “letting things go through to the keeper” I’m getting better at not trying to control everything in my life and that is certainly making things in my head a lot calmer. Now I just need to up the exercise a bit more and I’ll be on a winning combination! Lovely guest post.
