Kindness improves your health & wellness

Recently my Mother-in-Law’s Aged Care Home held a mini fete to raise funds for Downs and West Community Appeal run by the Sisters of Charity.

There was feverish activity over the last few months as residents formed a committee, organised the day and made items to be sold.

The staff at Marycrest are wonderful and try to include as many of the residents in the activities as possible. My almost 91 year old MIL felt so proud to be included in the preparation, as they asked her to help in preparing some of the coconut ice bags to be sold on the day. No matter how small the task, the staff made the residents feel so important and this is such a great boost for their mental health & wellness.

As the day of the fete drew closer, I offered my services to help. I was given the job of working on the Devonshire Tea stall, serving cake, coffee or tea. We were so busy for the 3 hours but it was so special for me to spend time with the residents and their families.

There was music, various stalls with homemade craft and jams, raffles and lots of laughter. It was certainly a happy day and warmed my soul.

Showing kindness, especially random acts of kindness has health benefits both ways for the giver and the receiver.

Research has shown that acts of kindness can reduces anxiety and increase our social interaction

Over a period of 4 weeks, researchers at the University of British Columbia asked participants who had high levels of anxiety to do acts of kindness for others at least six time a week. The results showed that being kind or doing something nice for others significantly increased people’s positive moods and reduced anxiety.  Results also showed an increase in relationship satisfaction and more social interaction.

I will now be volunteering for a few hours each week and look forward to spending more time with the residents. We can learn so much from them and I hope I can bring some happiness and kindness to their day.

It doesn’t take much to be kind but the rewards are many.

    I completely agree. I think of myself as quite selfish and horrible but occasional realise that I do have a kind heart underneath my apathetic antisocial exterior. (And I know that sounds vain.)

    Recently I saw an ambulance at my neighbour’s (who I’ve never met) and then I stressed myself later feeling bad I hadn’t gone over to see if they were okay. I think they’re older and I thought perhaps the husband / wife (etc) needed a lift to the hospital or something!).

      Of course you have a kind heart Deb I can see it in your smile! It is hard to know what to do in situations like your neighbours especially if you don’t know them. I hope they are okay. We are all so busy with out lives that sometimes we don’t even get to know our neighbours – I’m guilty of that!

    Sue what a truly kind and selfless thing to do for your Mother-in-law. I agree that acts of kindness definitely make you feel good about yourself and no matter how small the act it does have an impact on those around us. I’m all for doing some voluntary work when I eventually retire. I think aged care homes would be a great place to start. 🙂 #TeamLovinLife

      Oh thank you Kathy but I really enjoyed it. I didn’t really do much just selling a few coffees and cakes but the residents were so excited and it was lovely to see them enjoying themselves.

      It is lovely Janet and the staff are just beautiful in the way they treat the residents. Some of the older ones can be quite grouchy but the staff always have a smile for them and such patience. My MIL is so happy there and told me she doesn’t miss being at home which is wonderful to hear. She is settled and happy what more could we ask.

Feeling needed and appreciated and able to give and help others are such important things for our sense of self purpose and wellbeing. So nice of you to also help out Sue!       Oh Min they have so many activities happening I need to make an appointment to see my MIL LOL:) You are so right that it is important to have a sense of self purpose and I’ve written about that before. I’m looking forward to getting more involved with my volunteer work there.

    My goodness this world could do with a whole lot more kindness! Good on you for taking the first step and volunteering your time. I help out at the kids’ school and find it amazingly rewarding – it’s fun getting to know the kids better too!

    That is a great idea getting the elderly people in the home involved and giving them a goal/task to work towards. And I totally agree, spreading kindness gives you a happy fuzzy feeling hence makes you feel better and therefore improves you health!
