Birthday Cake ideas I’ve made for my grandsons

June 7, 2023

One of the joys in my life is creating birthday cakes for my grandchildren. I’m certainly not a professional cake decorator by any means. I bake and create with love and the looks of excitement on my grandson’s faces is priceless. They don’t see the flaws, just the ‘birthday cake that Nan made’.

It is a lovely tradition and one I hope they will remember in the future.

My grandson, Ethan recently turned 9 and his brother Elliot turned 5. I had collected them from school and we were discussing the Soccer field, birthday cake I had made of Ethan’s birthday. He and his mates loved it and thought it was ‘cool’. High praise indeed. The discussion then continued to remember all the cakes Nan had made for their birthdays and I was pleasantly surprised that they remembered them all.

Unfortunately, COVID intervened in a couple of Elliot’s birthdays and Ethan’s 6th birthday but that’s life isn’t it?

I’m sharing with you the cakes I’ve made for the boys over the years. They aren’t perfect by any means but the memories made are the important thing.

I always ask the boys what they would like and the hardest to date was the Minecraft Cake for Ethan with over 400 individual squares. It was definitely a labour of love and I’m sure there was an easier way to do it.

I also have the assistance of my darling husband especially when we need to carry the cake to the party without dropping it!

Birthday Cake Ideas that I’ve made for my Grandsons

Ethan

We’ve had a sailboat, dump truck, tribute to Lighting McQueen, a Picachu cake, Minecraft and a Soccer field. COVID meant we missed his 6th birthdays. He didn’t miss out though as one of his school friend’s Mums made him a Ninjago cake and delivered it to the front door – how lovely is that?

Elliot

From the Very Hungry Caterpillar, to Bluey at the Beach to A Lego Number 5 cake. As Elliot has missed out on a couple of cakes, this year, Elliot requested a Lego Cake in the shape for a 5 – ‘because I’m turning 5 Nan’. I made a cupcake 5 which I decorated with lollies and eyes to make them look like monsters to share with the family . For his birthday party with friendsI made the Lego Number 5 cake.

I hope you’ve enjoyed seeing the cakes that I’ve made my grandsons. Do you bake birthday cakes for family?

Your grandchildren (and children, and friends) are so fortunate to have a baker in the family. Nothing better than homemade celebration cakes – baked with soooooo much love!
