July is upon us and amazingly we are half way through another year. We have just passed the Winter Solstice in the Southern Hemisphere which means that the days will become longer and we are heading towards Spring.
Over the last few months, I appear to have fallen into a Monthly Theme on the blog and the response has been surprising and encouraging. I was looking back at the last six months (as you do) and what themes I had covered and thought that June would be the perfect time to STOP the themes. However, I discovered a new theme which was part of a poll I conducted in my Sizzling Towards 60 & Beyond Facebook Group.
The Themes so far…
It all started back in February with #FitFabFeb
The idea for #FitFabFeb2019 was to make lifestyle changes to be healthier and happier. Putting into place a good foundation to keep building on.
March was #MakingMarchMeaningful
This theme continued with lifestyle changes with the emphasis on looking at ways to bring meaning to our lives. It was about learning and improving ways to be more mindful and appreciating the small things in life.
April was #ActiveApril – Get Active and Feel Alive
This was a challenge to be active daily. To make the commitment for the month starting a new lifestyle and being accountable for making changes to a fitter and healthier lifestyle. The idea wasn’t all about physical exercise. Being Active and Feeling Alive also needs to come from within and that is why I included ideas to Exercise our Brains daily and connect with our Spiritual Self.
May was #MicrosteppinginMay
This was all about changing habits one small step at a time. It was about building on the small wins until eventually it becomes a positive habit. Being more mindful of what we do and asking ourselves if it is good for us or if we need to remove it from our life.
June was #JunkFreeInJune
#JunkFreeInJune was not just about removing the junk food from our lives but covered topics such as decluttering our minds, our wardrobes and living spaces. I came up with 30 ways of Removing the Junk and Clutter from our lives and the most popular tip was unsubscribing from emails! You can read the first 15 HERE and the second 15 HERE
All of the themes were not just about being physically active or eating healthier. They were more encompassing of our lives as a whole including our mental and spiritual needs.
July theme reveal
So what have I in store for July? Ta dah!!! #JournalinginJuly
As I mentioned, I conducted a quick poll in my Facebook Group and asked the question: ‘Do you keep a journal?’
38% responded ‘Yes’
38% responded ‘Sometimes’
25% responded ‘No’
I’m in the 25% and don’t keep a journal. I’ve started several times and even visited my favourite stationery shop, Kikki K to purchase a beautiful journal and shiny new pen. I love stationery but even though I tried I just couldn’t get into putting my thoughts down on paper. I’ve surprised myself that I can blog and write creatively in this forum but writing in a journal just doesn’t seem to happen for me.
We often read about the benefits of keeping a journal and in her guest post, Peta from Strong Healthy Women wrote about The Power of Writing to clear the junk from our minds.
I was surfing the net as I do, and came across an old post from 2013 on a website. It was a journalling challenge and so I’ve adapted it for my theme in July.
It seems the universe was sending me a message!
I’ve set myself a small challenge and I would love you to join me.
What is #JournalingInJuly?
This may not be your idea of keeping a journal but I’m looking at it as a challenge to extend my creative writing.
- I’ve put together 31 topics – one for each day. The writing prompts are designed especially for those of us who have difficulty putting pen to paper or for the more experienced journaller (is that a word?) perhaps provide some new ideas.
- It can be bullet points, a few paragraphs or as long as you wish. The idea is to think, write and perhaps learn more about yourself.
- I will be having guest contributors each week to write about journaling and/or taking a topic from the list to write about.
- For the Bloggers, I have teamed up with Debbie from Deb’s World to host a link up each Saturday for the month of July only. You can select a topic from the list and write about it then link up for us all to share and enjoy.
Journaling can be a very personal thing so obviously you may want to keep your writing and thoughts just for you.
Here is the list of topics and I do hope that you will have some fun and enjoy this ‘challenge’ for July. Remember NO PRESSURE, some days you may find inspiration from the prompt and want to write and other days you won’t. I would also love to hear your feedback and perhaps you have some topics you could add to the list going forward.

Are you in? Will you be joining me for #JournalinginJuly?
The Over 50 & Thriving Series has been going for 18 months now and I’ve had some fabulous contributors. I will be taking a break from the series although always open to hearing your stories so contact me if you would like to contribute in the future. In the meantime, thank you again to all of you who have shared your inspiring stories and ways we can Thrive Over 50. You can catch up or re-read all of the contributions HERE.

Hi Sue, great post and love the theme of journaling in July. As you know I do write in a journal most days and a special treat I love to do for an Artist date is to choose a new pretty journal. Really looking forward to this month. Christine x
Hi Chris, I thought you might like the prompt for July. I’m hoping that it will give me the nudge to really start writing my thoughts rather than just my thoughts for the blog which are two different things. xx
Hi Sue, yes I’ll be joining you this month!! I’m looking forward to trying to write something each day and compiling it into a post for the linkup. Thanks for including me, it’s going to be a fun month!!
I’m excited to have you join me Deb and yes I’ll be writing like you with a compilation post for the linkup. Here’s to July! xx
Great to see so much interest here Sue! Can’t wait to see it all happen 🙂 #mlstl
Hi Sue, I have been enjoying the monthly themes. Like you say, they are encompassing our lives as a whole. Re: journaling, I like your words “no pressure” “personal thing” “bullet points.” Microstepping resonated with me this year. ?Thank you for making a difference in our lives, Sue:)
I’m so pleased you have enjoyed my monthly themes Erica because although I realise it isn’t for everyone, I do try to incorporate guest writers to make it more informative and interesting. Yes Microstepping has really resonated with me also. I’m looking forward to July and hope you will join the link up each Saturday for the month of July. Thank you for your last sentence – it is so encouraging to know that people feel I am making a difference in their live. Have a beautiful day, my friend. xx
Hi Sue,
I love the theme of journaling. It’s my “go to” when I need to reset things, change my attitude, or just quiet the noise for a bit. And it sure got me through the tough times. Good choice! Cynthia
Hi Cynthia, I wanted a change of pace for July and many of my readers enjoy journaling, although some are like me and just can’t seem to ‘get into’ it. I’m hoping that will change with the July challenge. I also hope that you will join in the special Saturday link ups with a post from one of the topics. Have a great week and thanks for stopping by xx
I’m not a journaller (I think I just made up a new word!) but I love these prompts – they’ll definitely give me something to think about even if I don’t write anything down. Your monthly themes have been totally on point this year!
Hi Sammie, I’m not a journaller either but at least it is a challenge that will stretch my thinking hopefully even if we don’t write it down. I’m so pleased you have been enjoying the monthly themes. Of course the challenge is to come up with a new theme each month! x
My blog is pretty much my journal – it’s where I empty all the random thoughts out of my head (lucky readers – ha!)
I think there are a few bloggers like yourself Lydia. I don’t seem to be able to journal so hopefully I can rise to my own challenge!
Hi Sue and Deb. I love the idea of #journallinginjuly Sue I’m a bit like you and struggle with journaling. I’ve been doing it for the past couple of months but I find it a bit of a chore. Look forward to following along in July and will join in when I can. I love your topics but probably won’t have time for posting every day
Hi Jen, I hear you and I’m not sure how I will go but at least I can give it a try. Of course some days will be more difficult than others but there is an Ancestry prompt which you might write about 🙂
I’ve loved your themes this year and will be following along with this one. I might even (shock horror) keep up with the prompts!
I’m happy Jo that you have loved my themes as each month it seems a last moment of inspiration. I’m hoping to keep up with the prompts myself! Let’s see how we go. x
I’m so looking forward to reading your journal updates over July Sue. I won’t be linking up because I’ve already got my July posts sorted, but I’ll definitely be checking out what the others share – and Deb will be a great co-host! You’re really on fire with your monthly themes this year and I’ve been enjoying them with you x
Hi Leanne, yes it will be interesting as I’ve not been able to stick at journalling although I kept a diary as a child. Monthly themes have been good but coming up with the ideas is a bit like pot luck really. x
Hi Sue – just back to say here we go with another #MLSTL party – thanks for co-hosting and I’ve shared on my SM x
Thanks BBB xx
Hi, Sue – I am now on my return trip home and back to commenting on my favorite blogs. I have never journaled before, but basically did (publicly) in the month of June. For July, I’ll be reading and commenting. I look forward to learning more from your theme!
Hi Donna, you have had an amazing June and I’ve enjoyed following your journey and accomplishment. I struggle with journaling and although I will only be posting weekly, I will be documenting my thoughts each day. It certainly will be a challenge for me! x Welcome home!
Oh, I like this theme! I want to start getting into a better first-thing in the morning habit and have been contemplating journalling (and meditation).
Hi Deb, I don’t seem to be able to get into journalling so hoping my challenge will help me. Glad to have you onboard. x
Hi Sue
I like this idea as I never keep a journal and it might be interesting so when do we start.
Hi Anne, it kicks off July 1 using the prompts in the image. 🙂
What a great theme, Sue! Hope to be able to participate as best I can!
SSG xxx
Sue, an interesting July theme! I do a regular morning journal with my morning coffee. I usually capture what made me happy the day before, what I’m worried or concerned about, how I’m feeling. If I’m in a funk, I focus on gratitude. I put things on paper to get them out of my head. I make notes about possible blog post ideas. I’ve gotten addicted to it and when I miss for a couple of days, I feel weighed down! It will be interesting to see how many other folks get addicted in a month.
Yes I’m doing it mainly for my own benefit Pat but hopefully others will get on board xx
What a great idea, Sue and isn’t it funny how the themes just need to be revealed? I’m not much on journaling but given that I am hanging around at home the entire month of July, this sounds like the very thing I need to do. I haven’t finalized my Sunday Stills themes yet, so your daily prompts may help with that! Thanks for your inspiration, my friend!
Thanks Terri! I’d love you to link up your Sunday Stills post if it is related to the daily posts. xx
Hi Sue – What a creative theme and list of prompts for July. My monthly wrap-up on my blog is pretty much my journal. Have a beautiful week! #MLSTL
Yes a blog is a great way to journal and your monthly wrap-up certainly is like a journal isn’t it?
and back for #MLSTL – shared
Thanks Lydia! x
Fabulous idea Sue! I won’t be able to participate unfortunately for a couple of reasons – 1) already committed to a photo challenge in July though haven’t publicly said so yet, and 2) going away for the 1st week of July and trying to slow down and take a bit of a break – BUT I look forward to following along and reading some of the posts for the prompts! xo
Hi Min, maybe some of your photos might be similar to the prompts? Also enjoy your break you certainly can do with one. Come back feeling refreshed my friend xx
What a great list of journalling topics. I find journalling a great tool when I am bothered by something but not quite sure what is going on, or as a way to express strong emotions, particularly to get anger out of my body and onto the page (and then burn the paper and flush it away) Sharing on social media
Hi Jan! I’m not great at keeping a journal so thought I would challenge myself and anyone who wants to join me. Thanks for sharing and also for linking up at #MLSTL xx
I love how you have continued the monthly themes. It’s fun isn’t it? I do already journal each night and it’s such a help for me to look back and see how I have been going. I use an on-line one (with password protection) called Tag Journal on my iphone.
I will be following Fat Mum Slim’s photo prompts this July and I find it hard to remember these at times.
I wish your community well. Great idea.
Thank you for linking up for #lifethisweek and next week’s optional prompt is Worst Job. Hope to see you link up again. Denyse.
Thank you Denyse. I didn’t start out the year to have monthly themes but have fallen into it. Sometimes things like this happen for a reason xx
And visiting again from MidLifeShareTheLove.
Congratulations ladies on hosting 72 of these now!
Denyse x
What a wonderful post Sue recapping all your themes. They’ve all been so inspiring and this one is no exception. I’ve been journaling for years and I love it but it’s always great to have some prompts. Thanks for some great daily ideas. xx
I love to journal, this is certainly my kind of month. Can’t wait to see what else you’ll be sharing in July.
You are quite amazing Sue at how much content you achieve in your inspiring blog! What a great list Sue and idea! Nice to see Debs as a partner too 🙂 I used to do a journal years ago, with little drawings alongside my writing, but haven’t picked it up for a few years. Maybe I’ll pick it up again 😉
Hi Sue. Journal writing is top of my self-care list. Your journal prompts are terrific. Pinned this post and will re-share. Visiting you at #MLSTL. Thanks for hosting. Have a beautiful day.
About a year and a half ago I bought a five-year line-a-day journal. I keep it more like a bullet journal, jotting down two or three facts about the day. It’s fun to go back and see what I wrote a year ago on that date. I do like the prompts, though,, and may just start an electronic journal using the prompts. The four-year anniversary of my brother’s death is quickly approaching. His journals have been such a comfort and source of joy to the family. That’s one good reason to keep a journal that I hadn’t really considered before. #MLSTL
Hi Sue. I’ve been trying to keep up with all of you but I’ve also been transitioning to the Republic of Georgia. Things will start to settle down when we get into our new apartment on Monday, July 1st. This journaling challenge sounds like a lot of fun and is right up my alley. Count me in.
Yay for a month of creative writing prompts and opportunities. Is it okay if we combine our creative writing with posts about other things? The whole reason I blog is for an excuse to write. Really like your thought-provoking prompts and look forward to reading everyone’s responses. Thank you, cuz.
I struggle with journaling Leslie so I thought some prompts might help me. If you could tie in with the prompts some how for the link up that would be great. You can select a topic and write about that if you prefer. Hope to see you there. xx
