It’s the little things….#4

June 7, 2023

Too often we get caught up in life and forget to appreciate the every day things that bring us joy. Some, as part of their morning ritual when they wake, think of 3 things that they are grateful for. Others journal, others meditate. For me, writing a dedicated post is a great way to stop, reflect and appreciate what has brought some sunshine to my life and it is usually the little things that can brighten my day. All of the little things in one place can add up to quite a few!

It’s the little things….#4

Grateful to still be healthy and fit enough to complete a Half Marathon

On Sunday, I ran in the Brisbane Marathon and completed another Half Marathon with a participation medal to add to my collection. I came 2nd in the Female 65-69 category and 7th in the 65-59 category. I didn’t start running until 50 and in just over two months I will be 66, I’m so grateful to have my health and fitness. My running friend, Caz and I enjoyed some fruit bread with ricotta, blueberries, strawberries and raspberries and coffee after the run.

Grateful for family in particular, grandsons

We celebrated our youngest grandchild’s birthday this week – not once, but twice. Elliot turned 5 and he is such a gorgeous boy, full of life and energy. As I have always made a themed cake for all the grandchildren, Elliot requested a Lego 5 birthday cake (‘because I’m 5, Nan!’) so of course I did. I baked one for his birthday party with friends last Saturday. Earlier in the week, all the grandparents gathered together at my daughter’s house for a short afternoon tea. I made a number 5 cake with cupcakes.

Grateful to have my beautiful grandsons who bring so much joy to our lives.

Grateful for and remembering my Mum

On the 5th of June, 1985 my darling Mum passed away at the age of 63. She had had a long battle with breast cancer for over 10 years and was such an inspiration showing courage and determination to ensure all of her children were settled before she ‘rested’. Mum was loved by all and recently, my cousin gave me some letters, my grandmother had written to my Mum as well as letters between my Mum and my cousin. I treasure them. I recently found some of the last few photos of Mum with my children a few weeks before she died.

Grateful to have had such a loving and kind soul for a Mum even if it was only for 29 years.

Grateful for my darling husband

I love our partnership in life we are there for each other and support each other through good times and bad. I am grateful that my husband supports me in all that I want to do and makes life easier for me, like making dinner whilst I’m taking an online session in the Strong Healthy Women Virtual Studio.

Grateful that we are able to start travelling again

When you are reading this, I will be embarking on a cruise to Papua New Guinea departing from Brisbane. Mike and I had a wonderful driving holiday to Tasmania but we are excited about cruising again and planning new adventures. I’m grateful that we are both healthy to travel in Australia and Overseas, out bucket list isn’t quite ticked off yet.

What are the little things that you are grateful for this week or that have brought sunshine to your day? I may not have a post next week as we will be on the high seas – but you never know.

This is another great post Sue, showing us that the little things are well worth celebrating and are often more meaningful than the big things in life. You are an inspiration with your running and love for your family shines through, they are so lucky to have you in their lives and your mum would be so proud of you. Enjoy your time away xx

Hi, Sue – These are wonderful things to be grateful for. Congratulations on your very successful half marathon. Wishing you and make safe and joyful travels!

Thanks for your post Sue. I’m still running my busy business at 76, so I am grateful that I can still contribute. I am grateful that my mind is still in reasonable working order and that I can still see the funny side of anything. When you are around people, they never fail to entertain, even if they don’t mean to.

Enjoy your trip – PNG will be quite exciting, I would think. And I olove the Sesame st cup cakes. Very clever. What’s made me happy this week? Found a new podcast I’m enjoying, feeling marginally better (but still maybe only 60%), enjoying a new show (Class of 07 – very funny), enjoyed a book, had my book club which I always get a boost from…so not that exciting but happy all the same.

Happy birthday to Ethan – twice. Great cakes!! I like the idea of the cupcakes forming the birthday year. Could even do that when I turn 66 next spring!
Your mama was so precious. She looks so sweet and loving. I know you still miss her every day.
