I’m a Body Image Movement Global Ambassador

to teach them that we are all beautiful in our own right. In other words, teaching them to love themselves which many women of my generation did not feel comfortable with because we were too busy pointing out our faults.

I’m excited to announce I have recently been accepted as a Body Image Movement Global Ambassador (#bimga). My aim as a BIMGA will be to help spread the word about positive body image and how we perceive ourselves.

You might wonder why an almost 60-something would want to do this.  Recently I read that 62% of women 50 & over still had body image issues and I wrote a post ‘Why are we still so obsessed with body image?’

Now some of you are confident within your own skin and commented so on my post.  However, for those who still refuse to see and accept the beautiful person you are, I’m hoping to change your mind.

Body Image Movement

Not long after I wrote that post on Body Image, I discovered the Body Image Movement and sent my application off to become a Global Ambassador or BIMAG.

If you read my blog you will know that I’m an advocate for positive ageing and making the most of life – physcially, mentally and spiritually.

What is the Body Image Movement?

The website About Us section of BIM explains:

The Body Image Movement teaches the value and power of loving your body from the inside out, supporting health and happiness at any size.

Encouraging people to be more accepting of who they are, to use positive language regarding their bodies and others and to embrace health at every size.

Why  did I want to become a BIMAG?

I have struggled with body image and my looks all my life.  I thought I was too big, with a bumpy nose and certainly not beautiful, however, when I look back on old photos now, I was probably a normal healthy young woman.

When I was at the cusp of turning 50, life seemed to change for me and through some young women who I worked with I returned to exercising.  I’d exercised on and off for years but in my 40s was probably not as dedicated.

Starting running (which I never thought I could do) with these young women who refused to think of me as ‘a certain age’ I realised that I could anything if I really wanted to.  They booked me into bootcamps and fun runs and my confidence grew.  I was feeling healthy and that showed in my appearance.

I lost some weight, (too much though when training for a marathon) and I suddenly felt different.  What was the difference?

I FINALLY ACCEPTED WHO I WAS and I looked forward to turning 50 rather than being dragged kicking and screaming.

So back to Body Image Movement and why I wanted to be a part of it. 

I want to reach out to women of all ages and help them realise their own beauty and to save them years of emotional ‘torture’.  Sure some of us are blessed with good genes but we all have beautiful qualities which outlast the physical beauty.

I also want to be a positive and inspirational role model to my children and grandchildren and encourage them to lead a fit, healthy and active lives and also to teach them that we are all beautiful in our own right.  In other words, teaching them to love themselves which many women of my generation did not feel comfortable with because we were too busy pointing out our faults.

    I have never heard of this ambassadorship, but what a fabulous message to portray. I think you’re right that we indulge ourselves in emotional torture. When I look back at my pictures in my 20’s, I see a beautiful young woman. At the time I felt massive and ugly. I wasn’t way to much precious time worrying about my looks rather than making the most of my best features!

      Hi Michele, we have wasted so much time worrying about how we look haven’t we? I know I did but I did something about it. I started exercising which isn’t for everyone but I wanted to be healthy for my grandchildren and it makes me feel so much better about myself.

    Let me officially congratulate you here, Sue!
    I think they couldn’t have a better ambassador for the cause than you.
    Body image is such a taboo. And I see frequently people getting almost obsessed about one body shape over the other when it should be about feeling good about and taking care of oneself.

    Body image can be an issue at any age, but you’d think as we get past “a certain age” we would be comfortable with ourselves. I know you will do great things on your mission.

      It is sad Audrey that some midlife women still feel negative to their bodies. I hope I can change their minds or at least help them to realise their inner beauty which we all have.

    Body image is a very big problem these days…most of the people want to look different, to be someone else…just look at the girls who are starving themselves to look like models.

    Good for you! Body image is something I’ve always struggled with, and with a daughter I’m even more aware now of things like this. Always good to hear about the message being sent that your looks do not make you YOU!

    That’s so wonderful Sue – I think we’re all fairly happy with out bodies by now, but underneath we know we could be doing more to be maintain our health and fitness. You are an absolute inspiration in that area and a reminder that age has nothing to do with fitness. You’ll be a great ambassador! xx

      Thanks so much Leanne. I think everyone has some little thing they don’t like about their bodies or age – although some wouldn’t admit it. All I’m wanting to do is just show people that as long as we are healthy and happy with some regular exercise and a well balanced diet, we should be concentrating on what we can do to enjoy our life.
