Your response might be “I don’t need glasses, so why go?”
Do you know what Glaucoma is? It is the leading cause of irreversible blindness world wide, however getting regular checkups can catch it early and it can then be treated in a variety of ways.
Over 300,000 Australians have glaucoma and although it occurs mainly as we age, it can occur at anytime. The main problem is that you may not even realize you have Glaucoma. Your eye sight may still be fine as it does not affect the ability of the eye to focus. Glaucoma may be present even though your vision seems fine and you don’t need to wear glasses.
You are in a higher risk category if you:
- Are over 40
- Have a family history of glaucoma
- Are short sighted or long sighted
- Have diabetes
- Have high blood pressure
- Suffer from migraines
- Have prolonged use of cortisone (steroids)
You may have the condition without knowing it and it will progressively deteriorate. Glaucoma can be treated if diagnosed early and most optometrists now include the test in your regular eye test. However, make sure you request the test, especially if you are in the high risk categories.
