Stop beating yourself up when you fall off the fitness track

Over at my #couchpotatotofabfit Facebook Group, the Fab Fitters are working towards their own personal health goals for the month. Our goals are all different. One member wants to walk 10,000 steps each day.  Another is wanting to lose weight. Another member wants to improve core strength by increasing the length of time she can hold a plank.

Whatever, the goal everyone is committed which is great!!

However, what happens when life gets in the way?

How to get back on track with your health & fitness goals

I have had a couple of comments from  group members who have expressed frustration with themselves because they have an injury or have been ill or just fallen off track.

It is so hard not to get disappointed with ourselves if we don’t seem to be achieving our fitness and health goals.  However, life has a habit of getting in the way and we need to stop beating ourselves up about it.


STOP beating yourself up when you fall off the fitness track – it is counter-productive!

Beating yourself up because you have had a blip in your fitness and health goal is counter-productive.


Here are 3 reasons why beating yourself up when you fall off the fitness track is counter-productive

1. When you beat yourself up you get stressed which will affect your mood and mental strength.

2. Beating yourself up makes you feel disappointed in yourself which will probably make it easier for you to give up.  ‘Oh I’ve missed exercising for three days straight I might as well give up” – sound familiar?

3. Pushing the exercise after illness or an injury can make you ill again or make the injury worse.  You need to be patient and take time to ease back into your fitness program.  It might take longer but at least you will be stronger and avoid further illness or injury.

    It’s really a case of cutting yourself a little bit of slack and focusing on all that you are achieving, rather than letting the small setbacks become bigger than they need to be (that’s when you start giving up – big mistake!)

      I used to be so much harder on myself Leanne but I realise the world won’t end if I get off track. I know I will get back on but some days you just need to let life take it’s course.

      Thanks Roxanne it is hard to accept sometimes, especially if we are really working towards a goal. However, it is amazing how much better you feel if you just accept and then move on. Have a great week!

    “The world won’t end because things haven’t gone to plan”. I like that. I never liked plans or schedules; I prefer roadmaps. You never know if the route you plan to follow on the map has construction on it that will slow you down, or force a detour. A roadmap allows for it all.

      Yes Jan, I’ve been guilty of really putting too much pressure on myself. At the end of the day it is all about being healthy physically and mentally so if you aren’t in the right headspace it is okay to take time to regroup. Thanks for stopping by Jan and have a beautiful day.

    I really needed to read #3. I’ve been injured for months now and I was an avid runner. It’s SO hard for me to not be active. Patience….♥
