The Best Ways to Exercise without breaking the budget

best ways to exercise without breaking the budget

What are the best ways to exercise without breaking the budget?

This is a question we ask ourselves when we want to start a new exercise program.   One of the reasons people give for not even starting to exercise is that they ‘can’t afford it’.

Gym fees, personal trainers or classes are great but they can become expensive. For me, having a personal trainer is the best way to get results with personalised programs and also the experience of providing the correct technique, However, there are ways you can exercise which won’t break the bank.

You can still be Fit and Fabulous without spending a lot of money.

Warning:  If you are a beginner or haven’t exercised for a while, consult your doctor to get the okay and take it slowly.

Firstly there are ways you can incorporate exercise during your day without even realising it – and they are free!

  • Gardening
  • Housework – 45 minutes can burn off 119 calories!
  • Find some stairs
  • Do some squats, lunges and sit ups while watching TV
  • Go for a walk
  • Weight training using homemade weights
  • Put some music on and dance
  • Gentle stretches for flexibility
  • Ride a bike
  • Skip

There are also Apps which can help you keep on track.  Some are for free and others cost only a few dollars which is a good investment for your health and happiness.

Apps have become a ‘go to’ for many things in life and apps for health and well being are no exception.  I’ve selected two which I use, however there are so many to choose from depending on what your requirements are.

Map My Fitness

I’ve previously used mapmyrun to log my running however, with mapmyfitness it covers a variety of workouts from walking, running to crunches and leg lifts.  It has a GPS tracker and records your workout details, including duration, distance, pace, speed, elevation, calories burned, and routes using an interactive map.  This is a free version although you can upgrade to a paid version.

Yoga Studio ways to exercise without breaking the budget

My personal trainer introduced me to Yoga Studio and I love it.  It has classes for 3 levels – beginners, intermediate and advanced. You can select from a variety of classes and length of time.  I find a 20 minute Earth Salutation to start my day is perfect.  I also love the Yoga for Runners classes.  The cost is around $5.99 and is available for Apple and Android.

As you can see, keeping fit and healthy doesn’t need to be expensive, you just need to get creative!

Are there some ways you can think of to exercise without breaking the budget?

It’s nice to see a post on exercise for those of us who aren’t into the gym and can’t afford a personal trainer. I always tell myself that I’m burning calories when I’m cleaning the house (it makes me feel better about the whole thing!) and I love to walk – it’s free and clears the mind and keeps me fitter than sitting on my bottom!

Hi Leanne I wanted to write the post because you don’t really need to spend money on exercise. Walking and even as you say housework can still use up energy and keep you fit. It can put people off being healthier if they feel they have to spend lots of money when walking is for free.

GREAT post Sue! SOME of what I do….go for regular walks around a lake…for free!
Walk up and down EVERY aisle in the supermarket lol
Go to a local shopping mall on a really hot day and set a goal of 7,000 steps…walking through various shops…
Park further away from the entrance of the mall lol
I do have dumb bells at home and do a regime of squats daily… LOTS to do for free!

I sizzled right on past 60 six years ago. I find that my fitness regimen goes through spurts: start/stop/start again/stop . . . I need to JUST DO IT (like the Nike commercial says). Thanks for the inspiration.

Hi Mimi great to hear and I think that as long as we exercise more often than not that is they key. Even just going for a daily walk will help us stay healthy and keep Sizzling1 LOL:)

Those are all great ways to exercise. People fail to realize they don’t have to go to a gym, they can just clean house, go for a walk, dance, etc. Thank you Sue for sharing this post at the Wednesday AIM Link Party. I shared it on my social media sites.

Yes put ABBA on and dance around the lounge room – two benefits – exercise and happiness! Thanks for sharing and have a great week Dee!

I have never been one to go to the gym, but I do a lot of walking, housework, and outside activities. I wish I could do yoga. I am no way that flexible. Thanks for making us aware of the everyday things we can do.

    • Reply Sue Loncaric February 1, 2017 at 11:05

You sound active enough Pamela. You don’t need to go to the gym especially if you don’t enjoy that type of exercise. Please have a go at beginner yoga because I wasn’t flexible at all and now I’ve been doing it regularly I’m finding I’m much for flexible. have a great day!

A simple way to help us stay fitter and healthier is to avoid sitting for long periods. The experts are saying that we need to stand up and move at least a little bit (like a few jumps or a stretch) every hour or so. Apparently, sitting has a strong effect on our body processes and we are not designed to be so sedentary.
Just have to remind myself to do this, especially when there are interesting things to read!

    • Reply Sue Loncaric February 2, 2017 at 11:40

Yes Helen you are right. In fact, they suggest that ‘sitting is the new smoking’. I get carried away blogging sometimes and forget to get up and move. Thanks for the reminder! Have a great day!

I set a timer by the computer and if I get really busy and lose track of time the buzzer reminds me it is time to take a break and move around. All great ideas. Thanks for linking up with Blogging Grandmothers.

Yes great idea to set a timer. Sometimes I will set at the computer and completely forget about time and movement. Social media and the blog can just take over!!!!

  • Reply Grammy Dee February 3, 2017 at 18:30

All great ways to exercise! Thank you Sue for sharing at #BloggingGrandmothers #LinkUp #BlogParty. I shared on social media.

I definitely agree with you, Sue. Walking and riding a bike is so much fun to do especially with friends.

    • Reply Sue Loncaric February 6, 2017 at 09:22

Totally Agness. I love running with my Saturday Sisters. We run and chat and it certainly makes the exercise so faster and is definitely more enjoyable.

Great advice. I hate to exercise, but I know it’s necessary. These quick and easy ways to get it done at home without spending a dime sounds good to me. Thank you for sharing with #blogginggrandmothers. I have shared on my social media.

    • Reply Sue Loncaric February 6, 2017 at 09:26

We can always find ways to exercise Clearissa it is just a matter of actually doing it LOL:) Have a great day!

This is great info for people on a budget! I like to think I invest in myself with both a gym membership (corp discount) and my $89 fitbit. The external motivation of paying monthly dues to the gym, makes me go to get my money’s worth! I love having a fitness tracker that keeps me accountable.

    • Reply Sue Loncaric February 6, 2017 at 09:27

Yes fitness trackers are a great reminder aren’t they Terri. If you don’t feel like exercising just look at your fitbit LOL:)

I used to have gym membership, but these days I stick to things that are free (& can be done at home) – running, dancing, sit ups in the living room!

    • Reply Sue Loncaric February 15, 2017 at 14:24

That is the great thing about exercise these days. There are free apps, walking, running, dancing. You definitely don’t need to spend a lot of money to keep fit.

I know what you mean. I just tell myself I’m exercising when I’m doing the housework and that spurs me on!
