‘H is for Health & Happiness’ – Why You Need Both

Health and Happiness – two things that we strive for to make our lives complete.  Yes, I know that some would argue that you don’t necessarily need both – you can be happy or you can be healthy but for me, I honestly believe the two go ‘hand in hand’.  As the Dalai Lama says: “Happiness is the Highest form of Health”

Reaching midlife has made me reflect on where I’ve been and where I want to be.  I’ve taken stock of my life and know that if I want to live a long and fulfilling life I need my health to be in ‘top shape’.

No I don’t mean working out to the extreme or living on lettuce leaves.  My philosophy to keeping healthy is exercising regularly and making healthier food choices – it is all about BALANCE! (Read my 6 steps to finding the right balance at any age)

We all struggle with motivation, but I know that when I exercise I feel fabulous – maybe not always while I’m doing it but definitely I always have that ‘post workout’ high.

‘Why is that?’ – you ask.

Well when we exercise we release a chemical called Dopamine which is a neurotransmitter to the brain to make us feel happier.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aging_brain#Dopamine

We need to realise that we need to invest in our ourselves in order to be happy and healthy.  You are so worth it!

8 Reasons Why Health & Happiness go hand in hand

  1. Physical health plus Mental health plus Spiritual Health all combine to make us feel holistically well.
  2. Exercise reduces Stress and clears the mind. We feel less anxious and can appreciate all the positives in our lives. I know when I’m feeling stressed or anxious I go for a run and always feel I can tackle my problems or fears after a good workout.
  3. Good healthy food can improve your mood.   4. Exercise releases endorphins – a chemical released into your brain which triggers positive feelings. I mentioned above the ‘workout high’ that I feel after exercising and this carries through into the rest of my day.
  5. Being healthy means you can do more because you are fitter, not only physically but mentally.  You have more energy and feel alive.
  6. Spending time outdoors and getting back to nature provides a sense of wellbeing. Go for a bushwalk and look at your surroundings, take a deep breath and feel the wonders of nature round you.
  7. Exercise can improve your sleep and we all know how grumpy we can get if we don’t have a good night’s sleep.  When we sleep our bodies regenerate and recover.  It is so important to get quality sleep each night.
  8. When you feel good, you look good and you want to achieve more in your life. Your self-esteem improves. You feel happy when you achieve your dreams and goals and so a healthy and happy cycle begins.

    You are so right. I know that natural high you are talking about. Not only does working out help improve my mood and make me feel better, it also makes me more creative. When I go for a 5K, I tend to think about my writing and certain solutions eventually present themselves.

    The big question is, why is it so hard to motivate myself when I know the benefits are so rewarding? It can’t be a time thing, the gym nearest my house is open 24 hours a day. So frustrating at times.

    It’s so true that getting outside and exposing yourself to some fresh air and sunshine makes all the difference to your health and happiness (which definitely go hand in hand!) Sometimes it’s hard to find the time, but making the effort always pays off. Leanne @ cresting the hill

      I know Leanne. Where we live (downstairs from Mike’s parents) it is quite dark and dingy. I always feel so much better if I walk outside and across the road to the park – even 10 minutes of fresh air and sunshine does wonders. xx

    Very well put Sue! Looking good and feeling healthy automatically make you happy. The points you brought together were insightful. Something as simple as a walk adds so much difference to my everyday life, so I get what you are talking about.

    I feel so good after these “boosting” days with you, Sue. I walk and bike everyday for 1,5-2 hours , run twice a week and eat healthy food – mostly fish and chicken and a lot of vegetables.

    Health is important… but sometimes accidents happen (I ruptured my quad tendon on Jan. 9–on a sailboat and for two months couldn’t exercise…) Thankfully I’m now back at the gym, but have a ways to go to get back to my former level of fitness

    Yes, I totally agree! I always feel better (well, almost always) after working out. If I spend 20 minutes on the treadmill or elliptical, I usually walk away with new ideas to implement or solutions to problems I have.

      This morning I ran 14km it was a fun run I had booked with my daughter and friend. I wasn’t feeling well with a cold but not so bad that I couldn’t run. I felt so much better afterwards. When I run on my own I think of new blog ideas 🙂 so yes working out is good for the body and the mind!
