Gratitude can change your Attitude


Many of Sizzling Towards 60 & Beyond readers live in the United States so this week they are preparing for their annual Thanksgiving Holiday. BUT… we don’t have to wait until Thanksgiving to be thankful.

Gratitude can change your Attitude

I saw this quote and it made me take a moment to think about Gratitude and being Thankful.  These words get bandied about quite a bit which could lessen their impact, and I’ve also written many posts about being grateful.  I even made the focus of this blog this month about the Gratitude Series and asked guests to write their thoughts.  You can find all the related blogs here at this link:  THE GRATITUDE SERIES

So today, I really, really want to focus on how Gratitude can change your Attitude!

We all have bad days, our ‘woe is me’ days but really is it that bad?  Yes, for some it is, but for me life is pretty damn good – being human, I just forget that sometimes and need to be reminded.
Last week I wrote about the #itsinthebag campaign from Share the Dignity.  This campaign encourages us to put together some toiletries and goodies in a hand bag and donate for Women in Crisis.  I hadn’t taken part before but reading about the 85,000 women in crisis in Australia made me want to be part of it all.
I put together a bag and immediately felt uplifted because I was helping someone, a stranger, to bring a little joy into their lives.
I’m reminded of my good health and well being when I visit my MIL at her aged care home. I might be feeling tired or my body feeling a few minor aches and pains but when I see some of the residents who are not as mobile as me, I immediately feel grateful.

I’m reminded of how simply wonderful life can be by taking a moment to appreciate nature. A beautiful sunrise, or sunset, a gorgeous blue sky, can all make you feel thankful to be alive.  I especially feel this being with my grandson who finds joy in the simplest of things.
I might be feeling ‘down’ but a day with him, discovering life through his eyes and my spirits are lifted.
So if you are having a ‘pity party’ – which we all do from time to time,  why not use Gratitude to change your Attitude.   Reflect on the positives in your life and you will feel so much better.
Remember you are in control of your happiness – it’s your choice.

    It is wonderful that you practice gratitude by being kind and generous to others that are worse off than yourself Sue. I think that giving to others definitely makes you feel good. I like to do as much as I can for friends, family and the community when required. The key is to keep positive and this can rub off on others. #TeamLovinLife

    It’s always how we choose to look at life isn’t it Sue? I’ve learned that from seeing my work colleague who has everything but doesn’t see it or appreciate it. Her life is a constant misery because she is unable to look at the bright side of anything. So sad – we all need to invest in others, and in ourselves and look for those little moments of joy and blessing that pop up every day.

    Perfect timing for a reminder for me. I was feeling very blah, in general, and for no reason. You’re right, a bit of gratitude could certainly change my attitude.

    It’s not hard is it? Or it shouldn’t be. To remind ourselves of things we have to be grateful for and I know when I remind myself of what I have I do feel appreciative.

    I know how much feeling grateful has helped me. I sit and think about each little gift in my life that I am so fortunate to have in my life. Even a simple thing as having a roof over our heads. When I think of the countless people around the world who live in shacks with dirt floors, hungry and having no access to clean drinking water and then look at what I have, how can I feel anything but gratitude. The most precious things to me are my 4 daughters and 8 grandchildren and I think of them and their special traits and feel uplifted immediately. A great article and reminder Sue

    I think this is a wonderful idea. I wrote myself yesterday about being thankful on Thanksgiving and taking a moment to look at those around you who bring you love and peace. I should do it more often!

    Sue, what you said about visiting your MIL reminded me of my husband. Our next door neighbors were close to 90 when she had to go into an aged care home, which was in the next town over. My husband took him to see her every weekend. He said when he went there, he felt like a kid! 🙂 While I wouldn’t presume to criticize anyone for having the occasional “pity party,” an attitude of gratitude will go a lot further in making one feel better.

    I love embracing an attitude of gratitude too Sue! My Mum was in aged care for several years before she passed away last year, and my multiple weekly visits always made me think less about myself and more about her and her friends in the nursing home. I firmly believe that when you’re grateful for what you have, you attract more of it 🙂 #TeamLovinLife
