Another year around the sun for me last Friday which brings me to 67 years! I certainly felt so much love and joy on my birthday and throughout the weekend. It’s time for my weekly Sparks of Joy post which I write for the #WednesdayWords&Whimsy linkup hosted by Min from Write of the Middle.
From lunch on my actual birthday with my darling, breakfast with my running buddy and a family lunch yesterday, which was very special as it is always very difficult to get my family altogether at the same time.
There have also been other sparks of joy over the last few days.
- a long telephone conversation with my cousin/godmother who is one of my most favourite people in the world
- the Strong Healthy Women ladies singing me ‘happy birthday’
- messages and gifts received from family and friends who live far away – one coming all the way from Vancouver Island to Brisbane, Australia. (thanks Donna!)
- many messages received from my friends in the blogging and virtual world including a video put together by my good friend, Debbie from Deb’s World.
- my grandsons hand written messages along with the gift of their most precious football cards ‘for Nan to keep’. Ethan also made me a paper soccer jersey with #1 Nan. Those boys bring me endless joy and fill my heart with so much love.
I was deeply touched that so many took the time to contact me with beautiful messages, and for that I say ‘thank you and I appreciate you’.
These birthday greetings prompted me to write about the Gift of Connection and whilst birthdays are a good reminder to ‘make someone feel special on their special day’ the world of social media and instant messaging means we don’t have to wait for someone’s special day. We can send a message of love or support on any day and which is a tonic for our mental health and wellbeing.
We are also reminded that our actions reflect who we are and also influence how our children and grandchildren show their love and kindness to others.

The Gift of Connection: How Birthday or ‘Just Because’ Messages Spread Joy
Birthday messages or messages for no particular reason, in person, via mail or on social media can have a hugely positive impact on well-being and offer a sense of connection and appreciation.
1. Feeling Loved and Remembered
- Receiving birthday messages reminds people they are thought of and valued. Even brief messages from distant friends or acquaintances can create a sense of belonging and support.
2. Boosting Mood and Happiness
- The receipt of messages, emojis, and greetings can create an emotional uplift. These messages offer moments of happiness and positivity, helping to combat loneliness, especially for those who might be spending their birthday alone.
3. Strengthening Social Bonds
- Birthday messages often reignite connections with old friends or distant family members, sparking conversations and strengthening relationships that may have faded over time.
4. Encouraging Gratitude and Reflection
- Responding to well-wishers often cultivates feelings of gratitude. The act of receiving and appreciating these messages can lead to moments of reflection on the relationships, experiences, and personal connections built over time.
Birthday messages offer a meaningful way to boost emotional well-being, create a sense of community, and foster deeper connections in a digital world. However, sometimes the unexpected message for no reason at all is just as special.
Is there someone who might get a boost from an unexpected message from you today?

Your post is an excellent reminder of the importance of showing our love and appreciation to others – even in the smallest of ways – throughout the year and not just on birthdays. This love and recognition definitely sparks joy and is deeply contagious!

I knew it was coming up but I am afraid my birthday wishes aren’t timely. I am so glad it was an awesome day and a great way to start the year. Love the little soccer jersey!! Bernie
Thanks Bernie. I loved the little soccer jersey too because of the time and effort my grandson put into making it for his Nan xx
Isn’t being a hands on Nan so full of love!
Lovely words and I sure do know and understand the power of connection. Just a quick text or email to ask a friend if they’re doing OK. I know that you are feeling very grateful and much loved and that is what we all want and need.
Thank you so much for sharing.
