I enjoy making themed birthday cakes for our grandchildren. I’m not a professional cake decorator but the cakes are designed and made from love. I love planning what I’m going to make and try to think of a theme that will be relevant to the grandchild.
As they are getting older, they know that ‘Nanna Sue’ will be making a special cake. So there is always an air of anticipation as to what their birthday cake will look like. I like to think that we are creating memories.
This year, our grandson Harry celebrated his 7th birthday and as he just started playing soccer I decided to make a soccer themed birthday cake.
My ‘go to’ place for ideas is Pinterest so I searched for soccer birthday cakes and this helped me get my creative side flowing.
So how to make it?
Soccer themed birthday cake
What you will need:
Rectangular cake board larger than cake
Rectangle cake of your choice – you can use your favourite cake recipe or even a packet cake mix. I usually make two – just in case!
Icing – butter cream in vanilla and chocolate or you can buy the Betty Crocker Icing if you want to save time. Butter cream icing recipe
Food colouring – green for the field
Coconut shredded
Soccer players and goal posts – I purchased these as a set from Cake Ornament Company
Soccer balls and soccer boots – purchased from Cake Ornament Company
Kit Kat for player’s off field bench
How to assemble:
I usually make the cake the day before I need to decorate it and store in the refrigerator so it is easier to cut. You can successfully freeze cakes if you want to be super prepared as long as you store them correctly. Click here for a link on how to freeze cakes.
The cake usually is uneven so trim the top of the cake so that it is flat then turn it over so that the flat bottom is now the top of the cake.
Place the cake on the cake board
Ice the sides of the cake in chocolate – smooth out with a spatula or knife
Ice the top of the cake in green – use the vanilla icing and add green food colouring until you have the desired colour for the playing field. Make sure it is smooth.
Add green food colouring to the coconut and mix well – this makes the grass.
Sprinkle the coconut over the green iced soccer field.
Ice the field markings using vanilla icing
Add the soccer players and goal posts
Using a dab of icing add the kit kat ‘bench’ at the side of the cake and I placed a couple of players there.
Add the soccer balls and boots around the base of the cake board. Use some icing to help them stay in place.
Take a photo of your masterpiece!!
