Focus on the Positives


Life can be hard can’t it?  It can be hard to Focus on the Positives

However, we do have to keep going and try to have a positive outlook on life.  Sure we all have down times but being positive and focusing on the good in our life doesn’t only make us feel better mentally but it is good for our physical health.

I lost my Dad 36 years ago, my Mum 31years ago and my brother almost 2 years ago. All in their mid-sixties and all to some form of cancer. I could focus on the fact that they died at a relatively young age, as I’m turning 60 soon, but we have to focus on living the best life we can.  We don’t have a crystal ball.

My theme for the month is 31 days to Celebrate Your Life and part of being able to enjoy our life is feeling happy and positive.  Happiness starts with You and a big part of that is your attitude to yourself and your life.

When we lose focus on the positive aspects of our lives we can also miss opportunities.

I recently saw a TED Talks video with Shawn Achor  (a researcher of Happiness and author),  discussing Happiness and Success. it is about 12 minutes long but I would recommend you spend the time viewing it, especially if you are struggling to see the positives in your life.  Shawn is a very entertaining speaker, however he has a very important message about happiness and life.

Focus on the Positives

Shawn Achor explains that we are programmed to look at the ‘average’ rather than asking why?  Why can’t we lift the average up?  He also provided some tips on ways to make the brain become more positive.

The following activities done every day for 21 days will actually re-wire your brain to work more positively and optimistically.  On the video this is at about the 11minute mark and explains the effects on the brain when you do these activities regularly.

  • Write 3 things you are grateful
  • Journaling
  • Exercise
  • Meditation
  • Random Acts of Kindness

Why not try one or all of these activities for 21 days and see what difference it makes to your life?

    Great tips, Sue! I’d add 1) Connect with people with positive outlook, 2) Brighten your home and/ or work environment with what makes you smile, and 3) Declutter your mind by crossing off ongoing negative thoughts…They are big time and energy wasters.
