Menopause is a part of life however it doesn’t have to be a negative experience.  Over the last few weeks I have presented a 5 part series on Menopause by Dr Catherine Hansen and now I’m delighted to bring another guest author to you,  Ella James, who is looking at managing menopause by keeping fit and active both physically and mentally.

The global population is heading down an aging timeline, with the number of elderlies outnumbering the number of infants.  As current trend dictates, this gap will only continue to widen.

There are many consequences of an aging global population. Most notably, more amenities have to be installed with safety features and healthcare must expand its horizons to focus on prolonging lifespan and decreasing mortality rates.

Another area that is inadvertently affected is the number of women that will go through the stages of menopause.

Based statistics, there were 477 million postmenopausal women worldwide in 1998. This figure is estimated to increase dramatically to 1.1 billion by the year 2025. It also goes on to provide that most menopause happens between the age of 45 to 55. The average age that an American woman experiences the onset of menopause is reported to be 51.

While menopause is a natural way of life that cannot be prevented, its prevalence should not be met with resistance. Instead, an optimistic approach towards it can help to mitigate the negative effects that it may inflict on life.

Healthy Mindset to Cope with Menopause

  • The Need to Exercise

Physical activities play an active part in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The importance of regular exercise becomes more pronounced during the onset of menopause and continues to do so in its aftermath. As proven in a study published by the Center for Sports Gynecology and Women’s Health in Philadelphia, exercise routines can help to eliminate the symptoms of menopause.

It also helps to promote healthier physical condition that can reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases, obesity and osteoporosis.

Based on an individual’s exercise background, resistance training, stretching exercises and aerobic exercises are most suitable for women who are going through menopause or are in the postmenopausal stage.

  • Find Comfort in Emotional Support

Many women undertake a personal perspective towards the onset of menopause. They feel that it is a personal issue that should be dealt internally. However, establishing a strong support foundation can have a beneficial effect for all parties involved.

Typically, husbands, close relatives or friends are best suited to be included within this chosen group. By sharing the inner emotions and experience of menopause, it allows individuals to unload their burden and help others understand their situation.

Additionally, through these sharing sessions, the bond between each party is further reinforced, bringing them closer than ever.

  • Embrace Sexual Activities

Contrary to popular belief, sexual activities should not be discouraged as women reach their matured ages.

Although the body starts to exhibit signs of aging such as lower energy levels, reduced sex drive, and vaginal dryness, women should still participate in sexual activities. By actively engaging in these experiences, it helps to increase blood flow throughout the body and reduces the symptoms that are commonly associated with menopause.

For instance, increase sexual activities help to promote healthy tissue renewal around the vagina, effectively treating the symptom of a thinning vaginal wall.

  • Healthy Diets to Replace Unhealthy Habits

When women go through the menopausal stage, their metabolism rate drops by at least 10%. This leaves them vulnerable to unprecedented weight gain which can cause additional stress. This is why most weight loss news dedicate a section especially for women who are undergoing the process of menopause.

To curb the effects of this change, it is necessary to limit the consumption of carbohydrates and include more protein into each meal.

More importantly, unhealthy habits such as smoking, alcohol consumption, and drug abuse should be totally avoided.

These habits are well-known triggers of menopausal symptoms and can cause unnecessary problems throughout the menopausal stage.

  • Adequate Stress Management

When any woman starts to enter into the menopausal age, it should be construed as a signal to read up on more effective stress management strategies. This is because high-stress levels are commonly associated with the onset of menopause symptoms.

Being armed with an arsenal of stress relief techniques can help to keep these symptoms at bay and ensure a smoother menopausal experience.

  • Health Supplements

Last but not least, menopausal supplements are also highly regarded as a godsend for women who are struggling to cope with this monumental stage in their lives. These supplements tend to promote qualities such as prevention of hot flashes and aiding to achieve a balanced estrogen level.

Nonetheless, each woman should take precautions to ensure that their bodies are suitable for these supplements to avoid any unhealthy side effects or allergies.


The onset of menopause will start to create a stronger impact around the globe as more women are exposed to its effects due to the consequences of an aging population. This highlights the need to educate the general public about the menopausal process and why women should adopt a positive mindset towards it.

Although there is no denying that the symptoms of menopause can be rather personal and can lead to undue levels of stress, it should be noted that there are effective treatments and counteractive solutions that can help to ease these symptoms.

Whether through the implementation of a changed mindset or by relying on menopausal supplements, these strategies are proven to help women enjoy a smoother menopausal process.

    This is quite interesting and I know that exercise is great for general overall health so I don’t see why it wouldn’t be good for going through menopause. Thank you for this.

      Yes, Lee, I found it interesting. Fortunately for me I didn’t suffer too much with the big ‘M’ and I think that was because I exercised regularly it certainly helped me cope.
