How a compliment, a glacier and coming home gave me perspective

October 6, 2019
Finding Perspective

If you follow my blog or social media you would know that for the last three weeks, my husband, Mike and I have been discovering Alaska and the Canadian Rockies. We both agree that this trip was one of our best and several people commented that we looked happy and relaxed in the photos I shared.

We did have fun and for several reasons, including the night Mike even joined in to learn line dancing (he does not like dancing so I was certainly surprised) and then everyone on the tour bus was singing songs on the way home to our accommodation.

It was also wonderful to catch up and have dinner with two of my blogging friends, Donna from Retirement Reflections and Natalie from Natalie the Explorer. Mike and Richard (Donna’s husband) chatted away over dinner as if they were old friends and Donna, Natalie and I were able to chat about blogging of course! Such a highlight for me and an evening I will always remember.

So to the title of my post…..

How a compliment, a glacier and coming home gave me perspective’.

I need to make a confession – before I left for my holiday, I was feeling restless. Life wasn’t doing it for me and blogging was starting to lose it’s appeal. I felt tired. I looked forward to getting away and having some quality time with Mike as well as being in an environment where I could take some time to think clearly about my future without distraction. (apart from the gorgeous scenery of the Canadian Rockies which certainly was a wonderful distraction and a feast for the eyes!).

The compliment

Having dinner with blogging friends, Donna & Natalie was a highlight of the trip

As I mentioned above, it was a thrill to finally catch up with one of my dearest blogging friends, Donna for dinner with our husbands when we visited Victoria on Vancouver Island. It was also a lovely bonus to have, fellow blogger, Natalie fly from Toronto to join us. I will treasure this evening and the friendships I have made through blogging. (You might like to read Donna’s recent post ‘The Importance of Reaching Out’ where she shares our evening and another blogging get-together that happened the same weekend.)

During the conversation, Donna mentioned that the reason she enjoyed my blog was because she felt it was providing a service with relevant information and inspiration. She was very complimentary about me and my blog which was lovely but also surprisingly made me feel a little pressured. Here was an intelligent, beautiful woman and my friend, telling me what an inspiration I was to her and others, yet inside I was definitely not feeling inspired.

I felt a fraud because during my cruise I felt 99% sure I would not continue with blogging when I returned home. I also felt a weight of responsibility to my readers to continue providing good content to enrich and enhance their lifestyles.

I felt I had exhausted all my ideas for blog posts or what I did have to offer, had already been presented by others, so what was the point?

The glacier

Finding perspective
Flying the Aussie flag at Athabasca Glacier

One of the highlights of the trip was a visit to the Colombia Icefield. Not only did we see snow for the first time ever, we also were able to walk on the Athabasca glacier and fly the Aussie flag. Stuck in the middle of no where, freezing cold and loving every minute of the stark beauty surrounding us, I started to feel the inkling of what I needed to change in my life. In the stillness and silence of the glacier, I began to find clarity on what is important to me, what I won’t compromise on in life and what I can let go of.

Coming home

Finding Perspective
My new morning ritual – a mindfulness walk along the beach

As I write this post, I’ve been home for two days and have started walking along the beach to start my day. I have decided to take my own advice from Self-Care in September and have created a new morning ritual. Something that works for me, not something I feel I need to do because of websites and social media which offer so much ‘advice’ on how we should be living our lives. Most of this advice is very valid however, I’ve come to realise that ‘one size does not fit all’ and we need to determine what advice is best for us as individuals.

This is the new me, finally committing to living life on my terms and accepting that there is time for all I want to do.

Walking along the beach, relaxed and with no time constraints has brought some enthusiasm and creativity back. Reflecting on our trip, I realised that I was experiencing a sense of freedom and I like that feeling.

Before my trip, I had explored many different paths to take but I understand now that I was just trying to fill in my time rather than actually enjoying the experience and opportunities each day brings.

Over the next few months I will be making some changes which I’m starting to feel excited about. I know where I am going, I feel excited by the ideas that are starting to swirl in my mind. Watch this space!

Ageing Well, Living Well with Sue

Are you feeling restless or wanting to make some changes? Do you feel sometimes that you are overwhelmed with ‘advice’ from various websites and through social media? I would love to hear your thoughts.

P.S. It is a few days since I wrote this post and I’m feeling excited. I’m not sure if it was baring my soul to you all and feeling a burden lifted or I’ve come back with a new way of living my life. Whatever it is I’m feeling good and ready for the next chapter.

Hi Sue, I’m so pleased to read your post and to see that you have had a change in perspective, one that you feel happy about. Blogging should never be a burden but I certainly understand that in some ways in can become like that. I hope you are feeling better about things and that your holiday and the freedom helped make you see things a bit clearer. Looking forward to hearing of your news and changes you’ll be making. Always here for you to talk to! xx

Hi Deb, thank you for your continuing friendship which means so much to me. I’m sure others can identify with how I was feeling. We had such a fabulous time away, it was certainly good for our relationship and I’m determined to overcome my habit of wanting to do too many things at once and becoming disenchanted and overwhelmed. Have a wonderful week, my friend. xx

Sue, I’m so glad to hear this and I’ve loved re-reading the post and everyone’s comments. There seems to be a theme with them all – how do you fit it all in? It’s hard to be honest sometimes, but it’s necessary to be honest with ourselves mainly and you seem to be thinking things through along these lines. Take care. Shared for #mlstl

Oh my. I am so happy that you and Mike had a wonderful time and a belated welcome home to you both. Sometimes I think we need to get away from life to discover life. Does that make sense? Clarity begins to emerge when we are not involved in daily humdrum life. Restlessness is a symptom not a cause. I am so looking forward to finally meeting you later this month. Keep going Sue, delve further into what is important to you xxxx

Thanks Linda and I’m looking forward to meeting you. Unfortunately, I’ve just realised it is the same date as the start of the GC600 Car Race and we our apartment is on the track. I will have to postpone until early November, hope that still suits. x

I can’t tell you how pleased I am to read this. I have been wondering how you can continue giving so much of yourself in such frequent posting and whether this is burning you out.
I hope your new direction has much more “Sue time” in it, whatever form works best for you xx

Hi Jan, thank you for your supportive words and I have tried to do far too much this year. My new direction will not only have more ‘Sue time’ but also ‘Mike & Sue time’ which has been taking a back seat for too long. It looks like you are having a wonderful holiday and I’m enjoying visiting France and Belgium with you through social media photos. Enjoy the rest of your trip – it flies by so quickly! xx

Hi Sue, I’m so glad you had a wonderful time and came home with a new lease on life. I can’t wait to hear what you do next. I’m also looking to make some big changes in my life and, at the same time, trying very hard to improve my health after a recent serious medical episode. I feel so much more in control of my life now.

Hi Toni, you need to take care of yourself but I would love to hear about your plans when you can discuss them. Being in control of our life is so important and I had lost sight of that fact. The holiday was wonderful and Canada was spectacular. xx

Hi BBB – well you’re in the middle of a Midlife Epiphany by the sound of things. I’m so glad you’ve found your centre again and that you’re figuring out what brings you joy and discarding what is just stress and noise. I’ve been feeling guilty that I seem to be the only person I know who is just cruising through life – no bucket lists, no monthly goals, no driving ambition, no searching for the next challenge – just enjoying life as it comes along. Comparing myself to others who seem to be going full steam ahead was a little disheartening until I realized that I don’t care what they’re doing – if it works for them that’s great, but I have to do what works for me….. and I’m glad you’ve decided to focus on what is going to work for you. Looking forward to a chat soon and also to seeing what your new direction is going to be. xx

    • Reply Sue Loncaric October 7, 2019 at 10:29

Better late than never, hey BBB. I’m still working through it all but I really did some soul searching in such beautiful surroundings. Don’t feel guilty because you have found what suits you at this time – you should be relishing the fact that you are not stressed and life is good. I’m looking forward to a chat with you soon. I’ve missed our chats as you keep me grounded xx

I so understand the pressure a well meant (and sweetly sincere) compliment can create for a blogger. My first attempt at blogging in 2008 resulted in a decent amount of followers, and once the excitement of actually having readers wore off, pressure to put out quality content began to build. Eventually I abandoned the blog because of it. No ones fault for sure, it was simply my inability to cope.

I am so happy to hear you experienced a breakthrough, and look forward to whatever you decide to do going forward. Virtual hugs from California. ?

    • Reply Sue Loncaric October 7, 2019 at 10:31

Hi Tamara, blogging isn’t easy is it? I suppose there are some bloggers who just coast along but it can develop into much more of a commitment which can be draining. I love the people I’ve met through blogging and don’t want to leave it entirely, I just need to find a happy medium between enjoying life with my husband and trying new things. Thank you so much for your hugs which are appreciated 🙂 xx

Sue, bloggers put a lot of positive energy out into the universe and sometimes it comes at their own expense. I am glad you found resolve during your time away and I hope the changes you make will contribute greatly to your well-being.

    • Reply Sue Loncaric October 7, 2019 at 10:35

Thank you Suzanne. Many people don’t realise the effort that bloggers put into writing and yes it does come at an expense sometimes. My holiday in stunning Canada certainly gave me the opportunity to remove myself from ‘life’ for a while and just have fun. Have a beautiful week and thank you for stopping by to comment. xx

A little space around us is always a good thing. I loved reading your post. I feel like I’ve been running so fast the past few months that I feel like I’ve lost the ‘me’ in the mix. I’m going to take some of this to heart. I have to beach to walk on, but still reside in an area chock full of nature where I can hear the birds singing and feel the sunshine on my soul.

Hi Sue. How lovely that your were able to arrange that meet-up! I only had to travel from South California to get together with Donna and Richard… but you traveled from another hemisphere!

I know what you mean about feeling pressure once you begin a blog… I feel it too now and then. My blog was never intended to be especially informative or inspirational, or to gather and share wisdom from multiple sources. It’s just about little ol’ me in retirement. I hope if you stay in the blogging world (and, fortunately, it sounds like you might), that you’ll continue to share stories about YOU. I really enjoy getting to know my blogging friends better and those types of posts (like this one was) makes me feel as if I know you a little bit more.

Hi Janis, the catchup was one of the highlights of our trip but unfortunately it went by too fast. I knew when I was visiting Victoria I just had to take the opportunity to meet Donna who is one of my favourite bloggers and a special friend. It was wonderful that Natalie could also make it and Mike & Richard got on so well. All in all it was great. I’m taking my time with the future now but feel inspired and grateful for all the positive comments I’ve received. Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment and I hope you have a beautiful week. xx

I loved reading this. I’m battling with the same issues re my astro site at the moment. My heart isn’t in it and I’m feeling as though it’s served its purpose to me. I thoroughly enjoyed your holiday – of course, I tagged along, virtually speaking – and am excited at the prospect of something new from you. I’ve told you before – I see you as an inspiration (no pressure lol) and I’m tossing around an idea in my head that you’ve inspired. xx

I do feel a weight has been lifted by sharing and not trying to hide how I feel because of a responsibility to be ‘inspiring’ for my readers. I do appreciate and value your comments and I’m so pleased you feel inspired to follow an idea. I can’t wait to hear about it. I’m also looking forward to your new book ready. Sue, I have been where you (are) were with blogging, not once but twice! During my three-month break in 2018, I decided to go back to posting about what I love, photography, and re-instated Sunday Stills after another wildly popular photo challenge on WordPress disappeared. Yes, you provide incredible and thorough information on fitness and lifestyle and you have been a huge inspiration to me over these years. I’m glad you found new inspiration and also got to meet my lovely friend Donna in the process! Meeting with other bloggers in itself is truly inspirational! There are a LOT of highly successful and well-loved blogs that only post 1-2 times a week and they are not lacking in interest or followers. So follow your heart and enjoy that wonderful leisure time! FYI, I am getting very close to finishing my book, No Excuses Fitness, and hope to launch no later than summer 2020! I hope I get to meet you some day in person, Sue!

It’s amazing isn’t it that so often we have to go away to find our perspective and priorities and what thing in our life need to change? I am looking forward to hearing more about changes and decisions you have made. Xx

Whatever stage of life we’re at sometimes it’s necessary to stop just a while to ‘smell the roses’ – no less so for a blogger. Although I don’t actually consider myself a ‘blogger’ my website still needs regular ‘feeding’ and a certain amount of pressure does build. But I know that it’s all self induced, I’m sure no-one would actually notice if a newsletter did’t turn up on time! So take time out Sue, your clarity of thought will be all the richer.

Sue, At least 2-3 times a year I question whether I can continue my blogging. New content, different ways of thinking about stuff, keeping it fresh and interesting and yet staying “on topic” (as that’s why folks started to follow me). And I only try and post once a week! So I definitely get it. But you need to figure out what is right for you. And right for you now as that might change in 6 months or a year.

You know I have loved your monthly themes…but also wondered how you could find the time to then FB post on them every day! It kinda left like the April challenge with a post every day. (Something I have avoided completely… I can barely keep up in the reading of blogs as it is!).

I’ll be waiting (with everyone else) to understand where your new path takes you. A new morning routine sounds lovely. Changes you are excited about sounds good too! Please don’t take our compliments that you inspire us as pressure! You inspire us by simply being you and sharing yourself with us. So continue to be you and do what is right for you!

I’m pleased you enjoyed your, what looked like, amazing holiday with your husband and had a well earned rest. Taking a step back is so incredibly important and to be honest, I’m so glad I read this today, because I also, have been wondering whether to take a new direction. Sue, I’m so glad you enjoyed your trip. What an experience! How wonderful to have met up with Donna & her hubby & Natalie. Blogging is amazing for the friendships and connections we can make across the world! I understand your thought process of whether to continue with blogging or not. I go through that regularly. I know now though that blogging is under my skin and in my blood I probably won’t ever stop, however the amount of dedication and regularity I devote to it may ebb and flow at times. Blogging take a lot of time and a lot of effort that those who do not blog would not understand. I’m glad you’ve decided to continue and I look forward to what plans you have going forward. Perspective, distance and becoming closer to the one you love all contribute to ‘clearer vision’ and a sense of what we want. I do think on-line can narrow the vision so far, especially when there is a perceived competition or whatever it might be, striving to be better…and the distance literally you had helped you clarify your wants and needs. Glad you are back and hope that a bit of blogging here and there figures in your future but at the level which keeps you well.

Thank you for linking up for #lifethisweek. Next week the optional prompt is 41/51 “Your Choice of Prompt” 14/10/19. Hope to see you there, Denyse.

  • Reply Jennifer October 9, 2019 at 20:20

I think blogging morphs and changes throughout the timespan. I’ve taken breaks from blogging and I’ve changed how I blog. I went from once a week, to twice, to three times and then back down to twice and now I’m back down to once a week again. And I try not to get into a panic if I miss a week. What I’ve written about also went through these same changes until I got where I am today. Maybe in the future, I’ll change again. Who knows, but I certainly don’t want my blogging life to become something I hate, so I allow it to change as it needs to.

I have always appreciated your blog site, Sue. Informative, interesting, doable advice I can easily implement. Your energy and kindness is palpable. I like you even more now. Your vulnerability and candor make me feel you are very approachable and relatable. No pressure at all:)

Your words “sense of freedom” has really made me think and reconsider all of my obligations.

You also remind me of a phrase that continues to pop up in my mind the last few years. I had quite a regimented life for over 25 years with many obligations and strict routines. People often ask me whether I miss any of it. Of course, I miss the people. I often respond to them “Been there. Done that. Moving on.”

I am looking forward to reading about your next chapter, Sue! xx Erica

        Thanks, Erica much appreciated. xx

It would have been lovely if you had been in town to join us Erica but perhaps next time. We have led similar lives of obligation and responsibility and I find that difficult to let go of. Thank you so much for you kind words of support and I’m sure you will be hearing from me but maybe not quite so often. xx

I love the idea of seeing stagnation as an opportunity for change and as a positive thing. I need to make some changes as well and I like that you’ve taken to walking for enjoyment. I know you’re a runner so being able to slow down and appreciate the world around would be lovely. I would like to start walking. There’s nothing stopping me other than laziness or apathy. I just need to get started.

My husband is experiencing what you are Deb re exercise and walking. Finding motivation is difficult but I notice you are going to yoga so that is a good start. xx

It’s always interesting to see what the motivation is for folks to find their way back where they belong. Good on you and I wish you all the best in your new direction!
My attitude toward blogging is to do what makes me comfortable and happy. It seems that my followers enjoy it more than when I thought I HAD to blog.

Hi Betty thanks for your comment and yes I agree with your last sentence that readers do enjoy it when you blog for pleasure rather than having to churn out posts under pressure. Have a great week. x

    Hi Dear Sue,
I echo Donna’s admiration, but I often wondered what kind of toll your blogging schedule was taking on you. I’m new to this blogging world, yet have already had times where blogging felt like too much of a commitment. And I’m only aiming to post 1-2 times per week, not on your blistering pace! I’m not surprised at all by your open admission that you were burning out. How brave of you to admit it, and selfishly I am happy that you will keep blogging, even if it looks a bit different from here out. I so relish your perspective and am grateful for all the support you have given me (and others.)

Sometimes you just need to get away and live. Really live in the moment, not thinking of how you can use this experience to enhance your next blog post. Sounds like this was the break Alaska and your glacier provided.
We are in this third age…and reinvention is a big part of that. I don’t know about you, but I worked relentlessly for many many years and the last thing I need is another job – even if it is of my own invention. I love the writing, and I love the community, but I firmly believe that life is what is happening when we are blogging.
And, although there is tons of good info out there about what we “should” do, we each must find our own path through our midlife and beyond. When I hear about all the things the experts (and even our other bloggers) say we “should” do to be our best self I feel overwhelmed and inadequate. Sounds like you do, too.

I have enormous respect for the quality of content you have put out there for your readers and am sure that, in the future, it will be equally good, if just different.

Looking forward to seeing your reinvention.

Thank you Nancy for your lovely words of support. I think you really understand how I’m feeling and from the comments I’ve received others have experienced the same where blogging is concerned. It is a matter of making priorities and remembering that life is short. My husband is older than I so I want to spend time with him and give him some quality time rather than always having to share me with the blog and social media. Have a beautiful week and thank you again for your support and encouragement. x

What a dream vacation. That is a vacation my hubby and I would definitely do. I always find I learn something and grow in different ways when I travel too.

It was wonderful Amy and Canadian Rockies are stunning. x

Your cruise is actually one of the items on my bucket list and I enjoyed cruising vicariously right along with you. It’s interesting to hear about what you’ve been feeling recently with your blog because I’ve been right there too. Sometimes it seems that we start something and then instead of taking a rest when we’re tired, we simply continue on so that we don’t let others down, even when it’s detrimental to ourselves. I’ve got to make a change and am just beginning to get excited (and nervous) about that that change may be. But I look forward to continuing to follow you in whatever direction you go. I’ve always appreciated your kindness and support from my earliest blogging days!

Thank you Shelley for your lovely comment and I’m keen to hear more about your changes. Change can be good although scary at the same time. Have a lovely week and make sure you take that cruise. xx

What a wonderfully honest post Sue. I can also relate to some of the feelings you shared. It sounds like time away and your amazing trip to Canada (and your Bloggers catch ups) were just what you needed to reassess the direction of your life. I sound how enthusiastic you sounded at the end of your post. All the very best in whatever changes the future brings. xx

It is difficult being honest Miriam but sometimes we have to overcome that feeling and put it out there. The response I had has been amazing and I’m so grateful for the support shown to me. Canada was one of our best trips – the beauty is just breathtaking and I felt such peace there. Thank you for your good wishes and I’m learning to take my time and enjoy life – plans will evolve and directions will present themselves. Have a beautiful week. xx
