5 quick tips to feeling happier


I’ve written that being happy is our choice and should come from within.  We make our own happiness and shouldn’t rely on others to ‘make us happy’.  Life is not always easy and being happy all the time is just not human really.  I do know some people who always appear happy and positive but I’m sure they have their ‘down’ days too – that is only natural.

When, I’m not feeling great I usually need to get myself out of the funk and that means doing something.  So I’d like to share 5 tips I use to feeling happier – even when I don’t feel like it.

5 quick tips to feeling happier

1. Look in the mirror and smile

Research has shown that just the act of smiling (even if you don’t feel like) can have an instant boost to your mood.  Ron Gutman, author of Smile: The Astonishing Powers of a Simple Act writes that smiling is healthy for us because it reduces stress, overall blood pressure and increases endorphins ‘the happy hormone’.

So look in the mirror right now and show your pearly whites!  Even if you don’t feel like it!

2. Exercise

If I’m feeling out of sorts, my husband usually says ‘why don’t you go for a run’.  He knows that running helps me mentally as well as physically.  I come home all upbeat and feeling less stressed and anxious.  Just a brisk 10 minute walk can lift your mood.

3. Get some rays

Do you know that sunshine actually helps your mood?  There is actually a disorder SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) or ‘winter blues’.  Lack of sunshine can be the cause so make sure you get outside and enjoy some sunshine.  I love just closing my eyes and looking towards the sun it is an instant mood lifter for me.

4. Show some kindness

We can get so caught up in our own ‘pity party’ that we forget to show kindness to others. It costs nothing but can mean so much to others.  Just a small act of kindness can make you feel warm inside.  My husband and I visit his Mum in her aged care facility.  Most of the residents don’t get regular visitors.  When we go we make  a point of saying hello to everyone and know their names.  It only takes a few moments but the smiles we receive because we have taken the time to acknowledge each resident is priceless.

5. Enjoy Nature

Nature can be stunning. A beautiful sunrise or sunset, a gorgeous flower blooming, watching birds gliding, or ocean waves lapping the shore.  Nature can bring happiness and well being so make some time to go outside and enjoy nature’s gifts.

    All great tips Sue – sometimes we wonder why our happiness levels have dropped and it can be a simple matter of just needing some time in the fresh air and sunshine, or investing in others and stopping being so inwardly focused for a while.

      Life can certainly bring us down Leanne but I know for me a few minutes of sun or a brisk walk certainly lifts my spirits.

    Some great suggestions, Sue. You’re right. It’s amazing what a difference it makes to go to the nearest mirror and give yourself a big smile. Also a brisk walk out in the sunshine works wonders.

      Yes Donna it is amazing the warmth you feel when showing kindness to others. When I visit my MIL at her aged care home I say a quick hello to some of the other residents. Some don’t get visitors and really appreciate a simple hello and recognition.

      Hello and how wonderful that you have come to visit Ashley. I love Laurie’s website. I know it sounds corny but as you say smiling in the mirror does work. You might even have a little giggle at yourself but you certainly feel much better.

    I think the foundation of happiness is an attitude of satisfaction and gratitude. All of the wonderful helps that you have mentioned build on those attitudes. For example, if the sun makes our mood brighter, and it certainly does, without the foundation attitudes in place, the mood will soon dull just as surely as the sun goes down.
