Life is Busy – that is a fact of life these days!  Technology, work, family, friends, even retirement is busy!  TIME or lack thereof, seems to be the #1 problem that we face in our lives.  We are overworked, stressed and anxious about all manner of things and with stress and anxiety our health can suffer.

How do we find Balance and get off the treadmill of life?

At 55 I was fortunate enough to take early retirement

 “Fantastic!” I thought – “I’ll have time to do things that I want to do at my own pace after working full time for most of my working life”. 

My husband was happy as he had retired and was looking forward to us spending more time together including travelling and having fun.

After two months reality hit – what was I going to do? 

I’m not ‘old’ but I certainly started to feel that way – I needed to do something!  Whilst I love travelling you can’t do that all the time (unfortunately).

I started writing ‘To Do’ lists, Bucket lists and took on three consulting jobs including teaching myself how to build websites for small business plus also spending quality time with my daughter and gorgeous new grandson while she was on maternity leave.

I was busier than when I was working and stressed as well trying to fit everything in!!  I needed more BALANCE (yes, there is that word) in my life.

My problem was I had retired without a plan and after being defined by my work for so long I didn’t know who I really was anymore.  I rushed about trying to fill in every waking moment instead of really thinking what I wanted in life.

For those still working, especially if you have a family, it is a constant battle to prioritise so you can achieve some sort of balance and happiness. 

Life is short – do something about creating balance, for a happier, healthier lifestyle .

There are three main areas of life to help us achieve BALANCE.  Not only do we need to keep balance in life for our mental health but also our physical and spiritual health.

Balance Your Time

The old adage tells us ‘If you want something done, give it to a busy person’..  It means that usually busy people get things done. We all have the same number of hours in a week so why do some people achieve more than others – including time to enjoy their life?  The answer?  They have a PLAN and Schedule their time effectively.

Try this exercise – Write down all you do in a day or a week that includes all areas of your life.  Once you recover from the shock of all that you do, examine what you have written.  Are there any areas you can tweak to free up your time?

Balance Your Mindset

To have a balanced, healthy and happy lifestyle you need to be balanced in your mindset. If your mind is overcrowded with the stresses of life, you can’t think clearly, let alone find or make the time for relaxing and enjoyment.

Try this exercise – Sit in a quiet place, close your eyes and breathe deeply in and out for 5 minutes.  Try to clear your mind of all thoughts.  I know it is hard but if you persevere you will feel so much lighter.

A busy lifestyle can present stresses and anxieties which can become overwhelming – even though individually they may be small.  Our mind becomes tired and finds it difficult to cope.  Try to have the attitude of “What is the worst that can happen?” – it will certainly put things into perspective.

Balance Your Body

Part of a healthy, balanced lifestyle is finding balance in your exercise and food choices.  Exercise is a great stress reliever and we should exercise most days.  Walk, run, yoga, dance, swim whatever, just do some movement that you enjoy. 

On the flip side though, sometimes we can actually push our bodies to the limit.  At this time, you need to ‘Listen to your Body’ and if it is giving you signs that it is tired take a rest day and nurture yourself.  There is such a thing as doing too much exercise!

Eating a well balanced diet means that you can still enjoy ‘treats’.  I love food and there is no reason you need to live on lettuce leaves alone.  The secret is to use the 80/20 rule.  Eat wholesome food with lots of vegetables, 80% of the time and relax a little for the other 20%. 

Life is meant to be lived and enjoyed so you can have your cake and eat it too – within reason!

In the meantime, here are some easy ways you can start finding some BALANCE NOW!

1. Take a step back to reality and reassess –

  • Where are you and where do you want to be?
  • What can you change to find balance in your life?

2. Prioritise YOUR LIFE – determine what your non-negotiables are

3. Plan your dreams if you don’t plan for them they may never happen

4. Learn to say ‘No’ without feeling guilty 

5. ‘Me Time’ make time to nurture yourself

6. Enjoy the moment and ‘just be’

7. Reduce ‘Gathering Overload’ – do you download information, subscribe to receive mail and never use it?  Stop ‘Gathering Overload’ and be more discerning.  A good place to start is to address your ‘Inbox’.  What is important? Delete or unsubscribe the rest.

It has took me some time to adjust to my new life but I am enjoying my Third Age.

    I think we must be soul sisters or something Sue considering I linked up a post on the same topic today for #ZTT, though mine was written in 2014. It’s due for a recycle though because it’s just as relevant now as it was then. It’s a constant battle isn’t it … to feel balanced and keep overwhelm at bay? It’s good to be in tune with ourselves though – to understand what tweaks we can make, and how to help reset that balance when needed. I love what you’ve written on ‘gathering overload’ – oh yes – that is such a problem these days with technology and everything at our fingertips, flooding our brains!     Hi, Sue – You are absolutely right about balance – it is essential to our health and well-being. From my first day of retirement onward, I have had the opposite problem of many new retirees. I never wondered how I was going to spend my time — rather, I’ve scurried to cram in all that I want to do. Once again — I need to remind myself that balance is the key!

      I’m the same Donna I have so much I want to do and although that is a good thing it can also be detrimental to our health. We need to pace ourselves and remember that downtime is not being lazy it is vital for our health and wellbeing. Have a fabulously balanced week 🙂 xx

    I’m happy to say, since we retired, 10 years ago, I have the luxury of going where I want to go, and doing exactly what I want to do. I have to admit I do occasionally get anxious about my blog. Then I remind myself that I’m doing my blog because I want to, not because I have to, and that takes all the pressure off. I don’t know why we pressure ourselves about even the things we chose to do for fun. I don’t want to feel like I have to have an agenda, or a purpose all the time. I just want to enjoy my life.

    I like the Plan your dreams bit. I’m big on talking about doing something and then get distracted by the day to day….

    Balance is so very important Sue and finding TIME (my WOTY) is essential in my opinion. Your tips and exercises are all very useful tools to help us find that balance and look at things to make sure they really are important to us. Like the current saying ‘If it doesn’t bring you joy…’ get rid of it! Fabulous post 🙂

    Sue, Lately I am working on finding the balance between doing (going out & about, movement, mini-adventures) and being (quiet time, reading, solitude). Yesterday it rained all day and I found joy in cuddling on the couch reading a novel. No 10,000 steps, no interactions, no “productivity”… I didn’t even leave the house at all. And that was OK. It is OK to take down time!

      Hi Pat! It is definitely okay to take down time and in fact it is very important to a healthy lifestyle. I think we have been brain washed into thinking that we have to be ‘doing’ constantly but after a while our body tells us to slow down. Your day sounds perfect to me and I love it when I can stay home and read. xx
