Fashion Trends for Spring/Summer 2019

Fashion Trends Spring/Summer 2019

Part of self-care is taking care of our appearance. Sure most of us in retirement opt for comfort rather than making a fashion statement but I know when I take time with my clothes and makeup my spirits certainly lift. During Ageing Well in August, Christine from Christine My Private Stylist wrote about her experience working with Cancer patients in the Uniquely You Workshop that she created.

As Fashion Editor for Sizzling Towards 60 & Beyond, I asked Christine to give us some fashion ideas for the coming Spring/Summer season.

Fashion Trends for Spring/Summer 2019

It seems only a few short months ago I was writing about the Autumn/Winter trends and here we are already talking Spring and Summer which I am sure will be a welcome relief for those of us living in the colder winters.

While I was researching the trends for the coming season, I came across the runway fashion trends and I was gobsmacked at most of the ridiculous outfits modelled! Thank goodness common sense prevails in the fashion interpretations we have available in our shops.

I am finding, personally that in these amazing years in my sixties that I am embracing the softer styles of dressing and I think that probably reflects where I am at in my life, and my more relaxed approach to it. What I mean by softer dressing is that I prefer softer fabrics and softer more relaxed styles. Whereas I used to dress in the more Classic Style e.g. tailored shirts and skirts and pants, I now much prefer the more relaxed styles of flowing skirts, tunics, and dresses and leggings.

So what can we expect to see in the shops for the coming season?

Well, of the countless looks that will be popular, I have chosen some that I like and I think will be great for those of us maturing wonderfully.

JUMPSUITS

Jumpsuits

I well remember when jumpsuits were the craze in the 70s and 80s and I found it so annoying to have to pretty much get undressed whenever I went to the toilet! I don’t expect much has changed in that area when it comes to wearing them, but I must admit there are some really lovely ones around. They can either be casual and fun or can also be worn for more dressy occasions so I am including both looks in the images.

DUSTER JACKETS/ KIMONOS

Fashion Trends
Duster Jackets

Another trend that is to be found everywhere is the long shirts/duster/kimono

I love these as they are so versatile and can be worn as a long line shirt buttoned up, undone over a dress or tank and skirt or pants as a duster jacket. They can dress up a solid colour, can be worn as beach coverups and worn casually or dressed up. It makes for a great addition to your travel wardrobe with its multi uses.

TEA LENGTH DRESSES

Fashion Trends
Tea Dresses

A tea length dress is one that is below the knee but above the ankle. They are often, but not always a fit and flare dress. A fit and flare dress is more fitted in the top and flaring into an A line from the waist down. They are a very flattering style for most body shapes and very feminine. They are also very versatile and can be casual, suitable for work or dressy and elegant for weddings or cocktail parties.

  • Stripes are very in for the coming season, they are the most timeless print of all and vertical stripes elongate the body. You will find a lot of navy and white and also black and white as theses classic colours are always very popular.
  • There are so many other looks including butterfly prints, my signature look, as the butterfly represents to me the transformation that I have undertaken over the years, and I have a collection of all things butterflies from necklaces, rings, scarves and shirts.
  • Pastels, monochrome and neutrals are also going to be seen a lot and they can be used to build on a capsule wardrobe. Below I have chosen some of the colours that will be seen a lot in the shops and there are colours that can be found for us all.

What are your favourite colours and looks from the ones above?

Will you be trying some colours or garments that maybe you haven’t tried before?

I think one that I am looking forward to will be the kimono, I have seen so many gorgeous ones while doing my research.

I like a kimono and love the one in the centre pick. Love the colour palette too. Thanks for doing the research Christine!

Hi Joanne, thank you for your comments, I really enjoy doing research for my posts and learn a lot while doing it as well as doing lots of browsing in the shops to get a feel for the coming trends. That’s my excuse for browsing! I love the kimono as well and have just purchased one myself. Even better it was last season and marked from $59 down to $20! Christine x

Hi, Christine – Thank you for sharing this with us. We are just heading into autumn. The toffee shade on your colour palette will be perfect!!

    • Reply Christine September 9, 2019 at 20:02

Hi Donna, yes the toffee colour is perfect for autumn! Christine x

We are heading into fall and winter here. However, I have been trying to up my fashion game so I was interested in your post. I like all of the looks here. I love the kimono trend and have worn it often this summer. it is practical and comfortable and adds a bit of something fashion to a tank and jeans. I also applaud dresses in a longer length. I don’t want my knees exposed!

Hi Michele, I love the kimono too! And totally agree with you about not wanting to have my knees exposed! Thank you for your comments and I am always on the lookout for things to up my fashion games as well. Christine x

Thanks Christine – it’s really great to see what the current trends are. I love kiminos but don’t have one unfortunately. Of the dresses – I’m in love with the red floral ‘tea dress’. I like softer clothes now too. After decades of pencil skirts and suits etc during my corporate life, I’m loving soft, flowy, feminine and comfortable clothes these days. I hope we get a decent amount of spring time. I’m not ready for the long, hot and humid Brisbane summer just yet!

Hi Min, I think the kimono would be a great addition to your wardrobe especially with spring and then the hot summers in Brisbane when you are indoors with air conditioning that sometimes is turned down too much making you chilly. I have a friend who has moved to Brisbane from Hobart and she is finding the weather up there a little hard to get used too! I also loved the red tea dress and love the fact that now we are enjoying our days of softer dressing. Christine x

I am such a huge fan of kimonos! I love the summer look of a kimono over shorts. And I bought 2 jumpsuits this past spring (it is almost fall here in the US) and have worn them a ton. Great for brunches, graduations and special occasions. It’s just the zipper part that’s frustrating.
Love the fashion trends and thanks for sharing!

Hi Theresa, yes the kimonos are extremely popular and great over shorts . So good to hear you have been enjoying jumpsuits and you are right about them being very versatile for all occasions, and as you say it’s the zipper that can be frustrating! Thank you for commenting. Christine x

I love long dusters and sweaters. They are my go-to for working in a cold office. I tried a jumpsuit once, hated trying to go to the bathroom while wearing one. I swear either a man brought this diabolical piece of clothing back or Depends did.

    • Reply Christine September 12, 2019 at 13:11

Hi Jennifer, I love what you said about jumpsuits!? I think you are right! Christine x

  • Reply Jo September 11, 2019 at 10:41

Thanks for such a stylish and beautiful post Christine. I used to love jumpsuits, but these days (ho hum) I need to be able to get out of my garments quicker than I used to after say, a large mug of tea! I love the mid length tea dresses you featured – especially the red one. #MLSTL and Shared on SM

Hi Jo thank you for your lovely comments and for sharing my post. Like you I used to hear them in my younger years but haven’t tried them since I too need to get out of my garment quicker! Christine x

I loved the floral tea length dresses Christine – I just finished reading the latest update on what Duchess Kate wore to garden visit and she fitted into this same style. The floaty kimono and soft fabric dresses are perfect for our Aussie Summer.
Thanks for linking up with us at MLSTL and I’ve shared on my SM 🙂

Hi Leanne, I think if Duchess Kate wears them we are in very good company as she is so stylish and elegant. Thanks for your comments and sharing. Christine x

Thanks, Christine, for sharing this with us. We’re heading into fall here so toffee, terrarium moss, from your colour palette would look great. I also see deep eggplant/ purple and deep burgundy. in the shops. #MLSTL

Well, we’re going into fall, here in America, but I enjoyed reading about your spring /summer fashion trends for that part of the world. Thanks for sharing with us Christine.

I’m glad T-Length dresses are back, most dresses lately have been too short for my taste.

  • Reply Donna McNicol September 12, 2019 at 03:39

I remember a favorite jumpsuit I had in the early 70’s. Light blue denim and it fit me perfectly. But I avoided the bathroom whenever possible…ugh!

I love the color palette but admit my lifestyle runs more to leggings & long tops than dresses and going out clothes. Rural living and becoming elderly – I never was a fashion star but I still enjoy checking it all out! #MLSTL
