Sparks of Joy #29 – 8 reasons why Earth Day matters

April 23, 2025

April 22 is Earth Day an annual event to encourage us to focus on the environmental issues that face our beautiful Mother Earth. First held in 1970 it includes a wide range of events coordinated globally through earthday.org and 1 billion people in more than 193 countries now partipate.

There are so many ‘Special Days’ now that we have become immune to them. Some are whimsical such as Appreciate a Dragon Day to more serious focus days such as Earth Day. It’s a time for us to reflect on what we are doing as individuals to address environmental issues and to create a healthier planet for our future generations.

Earth Day’s 2025 theme is OUR POWER, OUR PLANET, calling for everyone to unite around renewable energy so we can triple clean electricity by 2030.

How can you help? Participate in Earth Action Day by educating, advocating, and mobilizing your communities. Create or find an Earth Action event on the Earth Day map, and get out the word on social media. It doesn’t just have to be on the 22nd of April. Being mindful of our environment should be daily.

I believe we are becoming more aware of the damage humans have inflicted on this beautiful planet and the need to do something productive NOW not in the future. Currently, Australia is heading for a Federal Election in May and Climate Change is an important issue that all political parties are trying to address. Some better than others.

We can’t keep our heads in the sand. It is everyone’s responsibility to do something proactive and not leave it to ‘someone else’.

8 Reasons why Earth Day Matters 365 days of the year

1. Earth is Our Only Home

Although space travel and research into the possibility of living on other planets continue at the moment, Earth is the only planet we can live on. Taking care of it is not optional—it’s essential for our survival and well-being.

2. Nature Supports Our Health and Wellness

Clean air, fresh water, green spaces, and access to healthy food all come from a thriving natural world. When we nurture the Earth, we’re also nurturing our physical and mental health. Spending time daily in nature is an important part of being healthy in mind, body and spirit.

3. Everything is Connected

Our choices—what we eat, how we travel, what we buy—affect the environment. Earth Day reminds us that small changes in our daily lives can create a ripple effect for positive change.

4. It’s About Legacy

Caring for the planet means caring for future generations. What kind of world are we leaving behind for our children and grandchildren?

5. A Chance to Reflect and Recommit

Earth Day gives us a moment to pause and think about how we live. Are we treading lightly? Are we doing what we can to reduce our impact?

6. A Reminder of Beauty and Gratitude

The Earth is breathtaking—from sunrises to forests, oceans to mountain ranges. Earth Day is a reminder to slow down and appreciate the natural beauty that surrounds us. Go for a mindfulness walk in nature and you will instantly feel calmer.

7. We All Have a Role to Play

You don’t need to be a scientist or activist to make a difference. Whether it’s reducing waste, planting a tree, supporting sustainable brands, or raising awareness—every action counts.

8. Earth Day Inspires Hope

Amid climate concerns, Earth Day is a celebration of progress, innovation, and collective action. It shows what’s possible when people come together with a shared purpose.

What can you do today that will contribute to protecting our environment? Small steps matter.

These are all fabulous ways to celebrate Earth Day Sue, I wrote about reflecting in my post yesterday. I especially like the final one about hope. Sadly a company I’ve been using for some time to reduce plastics and waste, announced it was closing yesterday, I thought it sad that the announcement came on Earth Day. Thanks for a great post!

Hi Deb, that is sad about the company closing. We need to do all we can to save the planet and as grandparents I think we feel this more as we want our grandchildren to have a healthy earth for their futures. x

This is a great reminder Sue. I think all your reasons listed are important. I do like no. 4 about leaving a legacy

Hi Jen, I don’t think we give enough thought to our legacy but this is one area we can be proactive with – doing what we can daily for our planet so that our grandchildren in particular will have a healthy planet and environment to live in. x

I love how there is an ‘Earth Day’ Sue. It’s never been so important to remind people of why our Earth is so important. I love the list of reasons why it matters on Earth Day and for every day of the year! I agree with every one of them. I think the generations following us are so much more educated, aware and informed so I am very hopeful that the future will be in good hands. Action needs to be taken now, big changes by Governments, middle-sized changes by communities and small actions by individuals all add up to make big differences! As always, thank you for linking up with #WWWhimsy xo

Hi Min, I agree about action from all levels and I despair sometimes at the lack of action by our Governments. We do what we can but if we all do something it will make a difference. x

We used to have all day celebrations of Earth Day at school. My best friend organized it all. She had speakers come in. We would have different activities all geared around learning about how to be better caretakers of our planet. Of course, it all came to an end with the endless testing we had to do at that time of year.

Your list is so good. I do my very best to take care of my part of the world. I am trying hard to be hopeful we will have a legacy for our grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

It starts with education, doesn’t it Marsha and you have played a large part in your student’s lives. I admire you so much. x

What a powerful reminder, Sue. I agree—it’s easy to tune out all the “special days,” but Earth Day does deserve our attention every day of the year. I love how you’ve framed it not only as a call to action but also as a source of hope. Your list of eight reasons is both grounding and inspiring. Small steps do matter!

Hi Donna, I know you live in a beautiful place and it see the beauty of Earth every day. Sometimes living in big cities we lose sight of how much we are affecting our planet and that we all need to do something no matter how small our contribution. x

I love this list, Sue! Yesterday I wore my tshirt with planet earth looking tired and the saying “There is no Plan B.” The clerk at Dollar General commented that she liked it. It was an opening for us to talk about the importance of taking care of our planet; it made my day!

Hi Lisa what a powerful message on your t-shirt and so true! Thanks for sharing. x

  • Reply Joanne April 24, 2025 at 07:59

Oh so very true! And I have tried to instill all of these (but especially #6!) in our family.

    • Reply Sue Loncaric April 27, 2025 at 09:14

It starts with us doesn’t it, Joanne and I’m sure you have taught your children well in all aspects of life. x

I can and do blank out at times about
“days” but you are acknowledging and reminding us all about the importance of caring for our HOME.
    Thank you for the reminder.

Hi Denyse, I think we have too many ‘International Day of…..” for things that are unnecessary. We then tune out and rather than focussing on what is really important. x

  • Reply Ju-Lyn April 28, 2025 at 11:39

You are right, so many commemorative days, it is hard to keep track and to commemorate them all. Still, I feel it’s such great fun that we essentially have a special day every day to celebrate should we choose.

Earth Day indeed is a biggie. There is so much more we can do to take care of our world, and to appreciate it for what it provides us. #6 and #8 are what stand out for me; #6 as a reminder, #8 as a call not to give up.

I like this post. I feel the governments of the world, including ours, have just decided to quietly (or not so quietly) give up. It’s a worry. And it won’t even be legacy, in our lifetime we’ll suffer. #WWWhimsy
