Developing greater Emotional Resilience for a happier, less-stressful life

June 17, 2024

Do you feel overwhelmed and spiral easily when things go wrong? With so much upheaval over the past few years it’s never been more important to develop greater emotional resilience – a vital skill that can help you live a happier, less-stressful life.

In this episode of the Women Living Well After 50 Podcast, my guest, Dr Jane Foster discusses her new book ‘It’s In your Hands – Your Steering Wheel, Your Choice’.

Dr. Jane Foster’s new book, “It’s In Your Hands” (Balboa Press), offers a unique and practical guide to regain and sustain control of your emotions. Drawing upon decades of experience, Dr Foster provides a simplified language to tackle complex emotional subjects. In an ideal world, everyone able to discuss their emotions healthily would contribute to a better society.

Dr. Foster uses a driving metaphor to explain how your response to everyday situations determines your emotional path, providing tools to regain and maintain direction. Emotional Resilience empowers individuals of all ages, ensuring that simple language and analogies resonate with children through to adolescents and adults. This unique approach lays the groundwork for emotional success at every stage of life. Readers learn to:

  • Communicate complex emotions in any situation
  • Stop self-judgement by embracing all emotions
  • Embrace bumps in the road rather than avoid them
  • Become emotionally and socially intelligent
  • Have the resilience to cope with challenging situations
  • Recognise the emotional road that others may be on and respond without judgment

Filled with examples and exercises, It’s In Your Hands empowers readers with the tools needed to navigate any road and take ownership of your emotions for a more authentic you.

Meet Jane

Dr Jane Foster, author It's In Your Hands

Dr Jane Foster has been a teacher/educator for over four decades. Throughout her career, she noticed how the pervasive culture of blame, criticism and judgement can be damaging and destructive. This realisation inspired her to establish Emotional Resilience (ER). In her doctoral research, Jane evaluated the effectiveness of ER with first-year university students, and the results were impressive. It increased students’ psychological well-being, life satisfaction and resilience, whilst decreasing their levels of psychological distress. Her book aims to share this life-saving skill with a wider audience. For a review copy please contact me.

This was a fascinating podcast, Sue! I do agree with many of Jane’s points. I had students who had never experienced failure and didn’t know what to do when they did fail at even the smallest of things. I also loved how she used driving as an analogy. Thanks for another wonderful podcast.
