Declutter your mindOn the weekend I looked at my dressing table and thought what a mess!  We divide our times between looking after my husband’s parents and then going to a new home on the Coast.  Life takes over and things pile up and the poor dressing table becomes a dumping ground.

You know the feeling there is always one place in the house that seems to attract clutter!  Keys, coins, mail whatever – life can be full of clutter and that can drag us down!

I thought to myself – ‘enough is enough’ so I set aside one hour to really go through everything on my dressing table, throw out what I didn’t need, file what I did or find a new home for things rather than just throwing it on the ususal spot.

I went to put some perfume on this morning and smiled to myself as I looked at my dressing table, clean, polished and clear of clutter!  I felt SOOOO GOOD because it looked so tidy and that made me feel calm and balanced in my mind.

Life is like that sometimes.  We let so many things clutter up our  lives and then we feel like we are drowning.  We need to STOP and have a good clean up of what we are thinking about and how we cope with life in general.  We need to develop ‘go to de-stresses’ that we can use to help clear our minds, relax us and enable us to focus on what is really important.

If i’m stressed I put the washing on!  I love the feeling when the wash is clean and dry and smells beautiful. Everything is in order.

I like order in my life it makes me feel balanced (my word for the year) and helps me feel less anxious.

Feeling stressed and anxious  can clutter our minds which prevent us from

  • thinking clearly
  • enjoying our life
  • being healthy in mind, body and soul


If I’m feeling overwhelmed and my mind is cluttered and preventing me from thinking clearly, I use my ‘go to de-stresses’.

  • Exercise
  • Go for a walk
  • Meditate and try to clear my mind of all thoughts
  • Take a relaxing bubble bath
  • Take a long hot shower and wash away my worries
  • Clean the house – nothing makes you feel better than having a clean and tidy environment
  • Read a book
  • Listen to music

    What a great reminder, Sue! I really need to de-clutter my mind, prioritize and focus. Being overwhelmed takes so much mental effort and feels paralyzing. I’m off to take a bubble bath and get back on track!

    I have been feeling a little brain cluttered recently. I am rushing to get things done before a vacation- hopefully the vacation will help me clear my mind!

    I thrive in an uncluttered environment (home and work) mess just stresses me and makes me feel like I’m not on top of things. I think life is like that – keep the mess out and enjoy the simplicity – it it overwhelms then get rid of it 🙂 Hope you’re enjoying chilling out this weekend!

    Great tips! Clutter gets on my nerves. I’ve been decluttering a little at a time but I feel a big purge building. I don’t like the process but I love the results. Once it’s done it’s like having extra room in my mind for productive things.

    I need to follow your advice…I definitely worry too much! Sometimes I can’t sleep because I think about the dumbest things and worry about them! Melatonin helps. 😉 Have a great weekend!

    Totally agree with this post, but decluttering is sooo hard. But when I need to de-stress, I mop the floor. For some reason, a clean floor makes me feel less anxious. When I can’t control anything else in my life, at least you can keep the floor clean.
