Celebrating Friendship and a 50th with High Tea

May 1, 2024

I enjoy the ‘specialness’ of a High Tea – dressing up, dainty delicious food, some bubbles and great company.

Last month, we celebrated friendship and a friend’s 50th birthday in style by having High Tea in the Living Room Bar at the W Hotel in Brisbane. It was also lovely to have a day out with my daughter which doesn’t happen often.

I highly recommend the High Tea at W Hotel Brisbane. The theme was ‘Ever After’ Inspired by Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art’s latest exhibition, ‘Fairy Tales’. Delectable food, glass of veuve and great company and great service.

The next theme will be Pretty in Pink which everyone knows is my favourite colour so perhaps for Mother’s Day??? (hint to my children)

The Living Room Bar

Unlike other high teas I have been too the Living Room Bar had low set tables with lounges and chairs. I wasn’t sure it would work but it did and provided a more intimate setting for catching up.

The menu

Like all high teas the selection is both savoury and sweet and in this case with three package options. When they brought out the tray, I didn’t think there would be enough for four but I was so wrong! There was plenty and we struggled to finish.

The basic package: High Tea Only and Endless Tea & Barista Coffee
The next level which includes the High Tea & Love is Blind Cocktail with Endless Tea & Barista Coffee
(The Love is Blind Cocktail – Absolut Vanilla Vodka, Activiated Charcoal, Mango Lassi, Lemon Juice and Aquafaba)
The premium level which we selected included the High Tea & Glass of Veuve Clicquot Champagne with Endless Tea & Barista Coffee

I was amazed at the skill involved in making these delicacies and some were just too perfect to eat, (I thought for a nano second) before indulging. Tthe Princess Midnight Pumpkin and the Bittersweet Poison Apples in particular were works of art.

Enchanted Forest Mushrooms
Midnight Pumpkin Tart,Freeze Dried Goat’s Cheese
Mermaid’s Cured Salmon Crostini
Dragon’s Fire Chicken Pie
Sorcerer’s Chese & Herb Magic Bites

Strawberry Macaroon Clocks
Queen of hearts Chocolate & Hazelnut Cake
Snow White’s Bittersweet Poisoned Apple Mousse
Princess Midnight Pumpkin Surprise, Mango & Vanilla Mousse

Plus to Share: Fairy Talke Cooke Cake Book – we let the birthday girl take that home

What I wore

I eventually selected a dress I’ve had in my wardrobe for a couple of years. It was an option for my son’s wedding. Navy with white butterflies it is fitted with a flared skirt. I added pops of red with my Fella Hamilton Jacket, red flats with gold trim and red lips and wore my favourite pearl drop earrings.

Have you ever had High Tea? Where did you go?

How lovely do these all look? I’m with you – and would have gone for the bubbly option. Not so sure about the low chairs – these days I’d worry about getting back out of them again!

I agree about the chairs, Jo, I would have preferred a traditional setting but I know you would have loved the food and the creativity of it all. x

I can’t say I have ever had high tea but perhaps on this next trip to England we should indulge. You look great in red!

Oh yes, do indulge, Bernie it is such a lovely way to spend a couple of hours x

Hi Sue, wow this looks like a really special spread – and so nice to have an outing with your daughter and friends! I’ve been to quite a few high teas at various places and though they’ve been good, I don’t think any have looked as intricate and special as this one! Love your outfit too – especially the pop of red! Thanks for linking up with #WWWhimsy and fingers crossed for a great ‘May’ ahead for us all! xo

    • Reply Sue Loncaric May 9, 2024 at 08:41

It was a very different spread to the normal High Tea, Min and I loved the ‘theme’. x

Oh, my goodness! I don’t think I would want to eat that, either! They are all so beautiful! You look gorgeous! I love your hair; it suits you so well! We did have High Tea at the Park Lane in London in the Palm Court. It was a must on my list. But, that was almost 23 years ago as we went for our 25th anniversary! I am going to have to try to find places near me who do High Tea. It really is a special thing to do!

Hi Sue – your high tea looks amazing. I especially like the theme and attention to detail. Love your outfit too!

It was fabulous, Janine and apparently the next one will be a Pink theme. It was quite different to other High Teas I’ve been to but very enjoyable and delicious x

I’ve only been to one high tea and it was for my 60th in late 2009. It was at a local Hotel and I got to share the celebration with all the women who were special in my life. The youngest was a few months old…and the oldest, ahem, was me! It was super being at a great place with women who were/are friends and family. I liked the choices but I suspect I can’t remember what I ate. That looked great too, Sue, as do you. Denyse x

I do love a high tea Sue, but it’s been a while since I’ve had one. The last one we went to was very traditional. I love this modern version of a high tea. It looks really great.

It has been a while since I went to a High Tea, Jen but they always make me feel special.

You found a great outfit Sue! I love high tea and have done it a couple of times, once at Claridges with my mum. The pumpkin shaped treats look amazing! Thanks for linking

Thanks, Gail. I had purchased the dress for my son’s wedding a couple of years ago and then wore something else. I had completely forgotten about it and so pleased with the look. The pastry chefs were very skillful and everything looked too nice to eat. x
